On Beyond the Gates, the gated community of Fairmont Crest has seen its share of power moves, but none quite as jarring as the emotional earthquake triggered by Joey Armstrong this week.
What Happened on Beyond the Gates

For months, we’ve watched Jon Lindstrom masterfully craft a character who is as lethal as he is charismatic—a rough-and-tumble casino owner who treats life like a high-stakes poker game where he always holds the ace. But as the ball dropped in 2025, Joey finally showed his hand, and the contents were enough to leave the entire DMV breathless.
Since his arrival, Joey has been the "sexy bad boy" fans can’t stop talking about. He’s a man from the other side of the tracks who built an empire on grit and a fair share of illicit dealings. From money laundering to cold-blooded manipulation, Joey has consistently proven that he’s not a man to be trifled with. Yet, in a raw, pivotal moment on December 30, the mobster's armor fell away. By openly telling Vanessa McBride (Lauren Buglioli) that he loved her, Joey didn't just break character; he broke the internet.

Lindstrom, an absolute titan of the genre, delivered the confession with a vulnerability that felt startlingly real. This wasn't the calculated "entrepreneur" looking for a payday or a way to stay "beyond the gates." This was a man stripped of his defenses, offering the one thing he can’t buy or steal: his heart. For a man who orchestrated the demise of Vanessa’s late husband, Doug (ex Jason Graham), and has used her real estate firm as a personal washing machine for dirty cash, the "L-word" carries a dangerous weight.
The question that every BTG fan is now screaming at their screens: Is Vanessa McBride officially Joey’s Achilles heel?
Up until now, Joey’s only loyalty seemed to be to his own survival and his Lakeview Casino empire. But love is the ultimate wildcard. By letting Vanessa in, Joey has provided his enemies with a target. In the underworld he inhabits, affection is a liability, and Vanessa—already grappling with the fallout of Doug’s "accident" and the pressure of the Dupree family’s scrutiny—is a liability he can ill afford.

While Anita Dupree (Anita Dupree) was busy dropping cancer bombs on her daughters, Joey was dropping a bomb of a different kind. Is this a genuine transformation for the casino kingpin, or is he simply finding a new way to bind Vanessa to him? If the look in his eyes was any indication, the "tough guy" might finally be in over his head.
Vanessa has always been his most complicated "acquisition," but if he truly loves her, the game has changed. Can a man who deals in shadows ever truly live in the light with a woman like Vanessa? Or has he just handed her the very weapon that will eventually bring his empire crumbling down? One thing is for certain: Jon Lindstrom is killing it, and Joey Armstrong just made himself the most vulnerable man in Maryland.
You can watch Beyond the Gates weekdays on CBS or stream live or on-demand on Paramount Plus.
