Beyond the Gates' hot new thing, Derek and Shanice

On Beyond the Gates, Derek has been spending more and more time with Nurse Shanice Johnson, and the sparks are there, natural chemistry is there, but will they be the next hot thing?

Beyond the Gates: Mending a broken heart

After the disastrous evening when Derek (Ben Gavin) proposed to Ashley (Jen Jacob) and she said no, Derek was heartbroken. However, to him, it wasn’t a matter of when Ashley would want to get married, but rather that she didn’t want to commit to him. There wasn’t something else; it was someone else. Andre Richardson (Sean Freeman). It didn't take long for Derek to notice Shanice as more than just the nurse's manager, thanks in part to Shanice’s (Ernestine Johnson) special brand of flirtation, which was loud, proud, and not at all subtle.

There is something really authentic about the way these two (Derek and Shanice) do their scenes together, and the natural vibe and conversation flow is full of energy and spark. Shanice and Derek look great together, and it looks like Shanice brings out a different Derek, one who isn’t worried about how what he’s about to say will be interpreted or reacted to. Derek is free to be himself, and fans are viewers like this version. When we see Derek in scenes now, he gives off a stronger, more confident vibe, and that could be part of the attraction to Shanice. However, if you recall, Shanice told Ashley that if she wants to play with Andre, then she will be more than happy to keep Derek company. Can Derek make a go of this? Or, in his heart of hearts, does he still want to get back with Ashley?

The Soap Central Message Boards have been alive with fans and viewers weighing in on their thoughts about Beyond the Gates, the hottest new …are they even a couple yet?

Flowercity79 got it started with – “I dont know about yall but I like them together! Yes I know it was just one episode, but I saw between them more chemistry in a few scenes than I have with him and Ashley in 5/6 months of scenes. He looked very intrigued by her and didnt look Ashley's way at all. I am happy to see he is moving on and doesn't seem all that torn up about their breakup. Its time for Derek to get his groove back and what better way to do that than dip his toe in some chocolate . Ashley on the other hand couldnt stop looking his way and talking about him. Let her seethe..I want Derek and Shanice to become an item. Anyone else agree?”

Soapfan54 added – “Derek/Shanice are fine, as long as he's not torn between her/Ashley I don't want Shanice to be part of any triangle involving Ashley! Shanice is ten x the woman that little brat is!”

SharikaC was cautious with – “I didn't hate their scenes. But I'm going to wait to see, if the show does anything with Derek and Shanice. I've been disappointed way too many times over what I think are potential couples, only for it to turned out to be much ado about nothing.”

Where do you see this going? It would be great to see Derek grow as a character and have more interaction with Shanice; they don't even need to become a couple, just friends, maybe with a few benefits thrown in for some added spice. But the jury is back, and we like seeing these two together. Just don’t make it a love triangle with Ashley; let her do her own thing with Andre. We don’t want to see Derek hurt Shanice because of feelings for Ashley, just to see Ashley hurt Derek all over again. These are moments where I hope the show's writers see my work LOL.
