On Beyond the Gates, we saw a mastermove by mobster Joey Armstrong. If it works, it just may be the one thing that could save Bill’s life and give Hayley a new purpose.

What happened on Beyond the Gates

Well, folks, if there is one thing we learned from Tuesday’s episode of Beyond the Gates, it’s that Joey Armstrong knows exactly how to play the game. And I’m not just talking about poker.

While the rest of Fairmont Crest is busy clutching their pearls over affairs and medical diagnoses (more on that heartbreaking Anita revelation another time), Joey was at the country club planting seeds that might just grow into the most interesting storyline of the year. His target? The always-petulant, recently-poisonous Hayley Hamilton.

Let’s look at the sheer brilliance of this move. Joey wants Bill Hamilton to run for Martin’s congressional seat. Bill, naturally, is dragging his feet. So, what does Joey do? He bypasses the man entirely and goes straight for the wife with the ego the size of the Capitol Dome. Joey knows that Hayley is starving for acceptance. She’s been shunned by the ladies of the Crest, treated like "Dani’s leftovers," and is generally about as welcome as a skunk at a garden party.

By pitching the idea of political power to Hayley, Joey didn't just offer her a campaign trail; he offered her a crown. You could practically see the wheels turning behind Hayley’s eyes when Joey mentioned Vanity Fair profiles and the ability to influence policy. When she corrected him with, "I prefer queen," it was game, set, and match. Joey Armstrong, you sly fox. You’ve just recruited the most dangerous lobbyist in town.

But here is where it gets delicious. This political ambition throws a massive wrench into Hayley’s current DIY project: murdering her husband.

We know Hayley has been brewing her special "herbal teas" and, as of Tuesday, spiking Bill’s whiskey. She is actively trying to kill the man. But Joey just handed her a reason to keep him alive. If Bill dies now, Hayley is just the grieving widow of a rich guy—a role that hasn't exactly won her any popularity contests so far. But if Bill runs for Congress? Hayley becomes a potential Washington power player. She becomes a woman people have to talk to.

Can she really afford to poison the candidate?

A dead husband is a tragedy; a dead Congressman is a federal investigation. If Bill enters the race, the spotlight on their lives will be blinding. Every drink, every meal, and every sudden illness will be scrutinized. If Hayley wants to be "Queen," she needs her King to get her to the throne first.

What are the chances of this succeeding? I’d say high. Hayley’s narcissism is her driving force. The allure of sticking it to her enemies from a position of political superiority is likely far more intoxicating than whatever poison she’s slipping into Bill’s tumbler. Joey Armstrong may have inadvertently saved Bill’s life—at least until after election day.

Of course, this is Beyond the Gates. Bill is trying to start sentimental Christmas traditions while his wife is weighing the pros and cons of homicide versus House seats. But if anyone can manipulate a murderer into becoming a campaign manager, it’s Joey.

Watch your back, Bill. But you should start writing that stump speech. It might be the only antidote you have left.
