Beyond the Gates Performer of the Week: Jibre Hordges as Jacob Hawthorne 

This week on Beyond the Gates, Jacob Hawthorne was front and center, giving his portrayer, Jibre Hordges, the opportunity to show us humor, leadership, and friendship. Hawthorne was everywhere and everything all at once, and Hordges' delivery of it all awarded him Soap Central's Performer of the Week.

Jibre Hordges on Beyond the Gates

Up until now, on Beyond the Gates, Jibre Hordges' Jacob Hawthorne has mostly been seen as Naomi’s (Arielle Prepetit) husband. But this week, Hordges got to show us his acting chops as the cop who is working on finally bringing justice for Leslie's (Trisha Mann-Grant) numerous crimes.

Hordges showed his range, portraying Jacob as a romantic with his wife, and used humor to counsel his best friend. With Leslie, he was the no-nonsense officer, but he threw Eva a lifeline while questioning her. For all, he used his demeanor and body language to enhance his words. It was refreshing to see Hordges step up to the plate as a main character and hit a home run. Whether Jacob was the doting husband, concerned cousin, or intense detective, Hordges seamlessly wore each hat like they were all natural fits.

Jacob is the man for the job

As Jacob spewed rapid-fire questions at Eva, Hordges' delivery of the interrogation is what sold it for us. The actor has done his homework, exuding confidence in his approach. He’s the man for the job when it comes to portraying Jacob as a boy-scout detective, who will pursue every lead, interview every witness, and exhaust all avenues in his search for the truth.

With Jacob on duty, Leslie is less likely to be able to wiggle out of getting caught and convicted (we hope). But the more that storyline plays out, the more we can see of Hordges — and that’s a win for all of us. As for Jacob’s personal life, there is a lot of room for growth, and learning more about him and his family outside of the Duprees. Jacob’s dad, Elon (Malachi Malik), is Fairmont Crest’s police chief. Hordges will need to tap into Jacob’s grit when it comes time for him to deal with his father's illegal extracurricular activities.
