Here's what went down Friday, April 25, 2025 on Beyond the Gates, when Ashley and Derek took their romance to the next level, Samantha made a mountain out of the molehill of Jessica talking to Tyrell, and the numbness in Bill's hand made a cameo appearance.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Derek woke Ashley with kisses; she joked that the firefighter was supposed to put blazes out, not start them. Yet, she allowed him to stoke the embers. After making love, Derek prepared a breakfast Ashley liked, and when Derek clumsily led up to a question, Ashley thought he was proposing. He annoyed her by blurting out “God, no!” and had to get his nerve back up before he could finally suggest that they live together.
Ashley probed into Derek's timing and sarcastically called it romantic when Derek owned up that his lease was up with his roommates. Baldwin added that Ashley was the first person he wanted to see in the morning and the last at night, and that they knew each other better than most married couples. Once the duo determined that Ashley would move Derek in with her, he asked, “What could possibly go wrong?”
After Nicole sprayed her hospital office with air freshener, Doug came to see her. Once Doug established that what he was about to say would remain confidential, he admitted to his colleague that he was a gambling addict. He had started betting with friends as a child and moved on to hanging out with hustlers as a teen. Nicole understood that Doug was pulled to the adrenaline and validation of winning; Doug concurred that it was part of why he became a surgeon. When he voiced that he had shelved his career, his friends, and even his wife for gambling, he burst into tears.
Doug fretted that Vanessa thought he was at work saving lives while he was out losing money at gambling tables. Nicole realized that Doug was in a financial hole; Doug went on to explain that he'd run himself so ragged worrying about his debt and working to pay it off with extra shifts that he'd had to have another doctor take over a surgery because his hand had started shaking. Nicole apprised Doug that his addiction wasn't something that could be alleviated in one conversation or a simple personal vow not to gamble anymore. Doug begged Nicole for her help.
Nicole texted Doug info on addiction recovery for medical professionals, as well as a support group, but Doug didn't want to go public for fear of being recognized. Dr. Richardson said that Doug only hurt himself more every time he chose silence over support. Dr. McBride feared losing Vanessa most if the truth came out, particularly because their marriage was on shaky ground as it was. Nicole deemed it unhealthy for Doug and Randy, the people who were profiting off of Doug's addiction, to know more about the doc than his wife did, and recommended that Doug be honest with Vanessa instead of deciding for himself how she would react.
Jessica came to see Tyrell at Orphey Gene's, where she impressed him with her knowledge of a chess move. Tyrell asked if they were going to make “this” a “thing”; Jessica knew Tyrell noticed her at school, and Tyrell confessed being put off because of her cool friends. “My overrated friends,” the girl corrected. She preferred to talk to someone real, like Tyrell, and suggested that his authenticity was what drove the haters crazy. Samantha came in and gave her brother space when she saw him connecting with Jessica.
Back home, Samantha couldn't stop grinning when Tyrell arrived and gushed that he had a girlfriend – and the most popular girl at Forten High, yet. Samantha bubbled over that she couldn't have chosen a better sister-in-law. Though Tyrell immediately answered a text from Jessica, he adamantly informed his sister that Jessica wasn't his girlfriend. Samantha's face fell when she learned that Tyrell and Jessica had only talked, and spouted, “Bro, Jessica's too fly for you to be slacking.” Deciding that Tyrell needed a plan, Samantha wanted to help him level up so he could be deserving of Jessica; Tyrell sassed, “Says the girl who's never even been on a date.” He threw up his hands when Samantha told him how to tailor his social media posts to be more interesting.
Tyrell was horrified when Martin came home and Samantha announced that her brother had a girlfriend. The way Samantha talked Jessica up, Martin wanted to invite her over for dinner, leading Tyrell to again reiterate that he'd only hung out with Jessica two times. The boy asked to be left alone and went upstairs. “Hormones,” Samantha airily told Martin.
Next, Tyrell saw Martin alone and eyerolled that Samantha probably already had his wedding hashtags figured out. When Martin acknowledged overstepping, Tyrell confided that, despite being popular, Jessica had stood up for him and called him brave for enduring the constant mocking over his underwear pic. Martin liked Jessica for defending Tyrell, opining that Jessica had good taste. Tyrell smiled.
At the country club, Naomi finished a workout with trainer Diego, and Martin was about to begin a session with him. Martin wanted to talk to Naomi first, and the cousins joked about Smitty and Kat murdering Ariana Grande songs at the family karaoke night, plus Martin and Jacob ruining Bruno Mars. Naomi could tell Martin was having a hard time at home, but he chose not to go into detail; as Naomi reminded Martin that he could open up to her because she was family, Bill approached and asked how his family was doing. Martin disassociated Bill from the clan and got catty about whether Bill had started sleeping with Naomi's best friend before or after separating from Dani.
Bill remembered taking his nephew to R-rated movies and supporting him in school, but Martin didn't agree with Bill's assertion that they could still be close. Martin left for his workout, and Naomi felt it unrealistic for Bill to expect that he could still claim himself as a Dupree. Bill snarked that it took Naomi suing him for them to even be on speaking terms. Naomi was taken aback when Bill hoped that her clients wouldn't construe his settling with them as weakness; she told him everything was on the up-and-up and that she just wanted to move on.
Bill reported that he was fine when Naomi questioned him about his health. Naomi had to leave when she got a text from Jacob; Bill asked Naomi to pass on his love to Chelsea, whom he missed, and to have Chelsea call him. But Naomi didn't want to mislead her sister and advised Bill to call Chelsea himself. Then Bill caught the tail end of Martin arranging dinner with Smitty on the phone and asked if Samantha still made mountains out of parmesan cheese. Martin spat that they had nothing to talk about unless it was as a congressman to a constituent. Bill barked that it seemed like Martin needed him. Martin flexed his political credentials and contacts, ascribing them as the reason Martin required nothing from the lawyer.
Bill knew that Martin had ambitions beyond Congress and argued that Martin didn't have the backing he thought he did. Martin didn't think Bill tasking one of his paralegals to write him a letter of recommendation years back merited Martin owing Bill anything. Bill scowled that there were still favors he could do for Martin and that their remaining on good terms would be beneficial to them both. “Don't play stupid,” Mr. Hamilton menaced. “You know what I mean.”
Sitting alone, Bill took Naomi's advice and left a message for Chelsea, thinking back afterwards to her coming to him about wanting to quit modeling. Chelsea couldn't predict what Dani's reaction would be with how erratic she'd been, and felt her mom's change in behavior had something to do with Bill, who denied knowing anything about that change. Chelsea hoped Bill would pay more attention to Dani, which would make Dani happy, and, in turn, make Dani not hate Chelsea for changing careers. Bill reminisced that it had been easier to solve Chelsea and Naomi's problems when they were little and directed Chelsea to simply be honest with Dani – because, while his wife might be upset at first, Dani Dupree would come back stronger than ever. Chelsea thought it odd that her father didn't refer to her mother as “Dani Hamilton.” Bill pivoted and gave Chelsea his support.
After Bill finished remembering how he and Chelsea had hugged, he popped out of his memory upon the arrival of Tomás. Bill ordered scotch for both of them and pressured Tomás to drink it, since he controlled Tomás's future at the firm. Having invited Tomás to join him at the club, Bill called it a great place to have a private conversation and wanted to get into the review board run by “the Three Musketeers who tried to sue us.” As Tomás reported how the women wanted to restructure departments and hiring practices, plus review firings and salary disparities, Bill's hand began shaking again, which he hid...but Tomás noticed.
Bill maintained that his hand had simply fallen asleep and got ornery when Tomás suggested Bill see a doctor; Tomás was aware this wasn't the first incidence of his boss' hand going numb. Bill instructed Tomás to keep quiet, as he didn't want to be seen as compromised – he then dismissed Tomás, after which Bill cradled his hand worriedly.
Vanessa left a third message for Diego, frustrated because she wanted to schedule another “session” with him before showing a house. When the annoyed Mrs. McBride finally spotted the trainer, he tried to dodge her inquiries into why he was avoiding her. Diego was torqued that he didn't spend time with her outside of their professional (not euphemistic) workouts and stalked away. Doug happened upon Vanessa and requested a dialogue; she nearly took a call but then thought better of it. Vanessa listened as Doug opened up about how their reconnecting sexually the previous evening had changed his perspective. He realized that Vanessa looked at him like a menu item she hadn't ordered; she named the assertion unfair, but tearfully expressed regret for the distance between them. Doug took her hand.
At the police station, Jacob had to calm down June, a homeless woman who had been brought in; she demanded not to be touched by her arresting officer and screamed that she had rights. Naomi arrived with coffee from the place where she and Jacob had met and was introduced to the resistant June, who had been booked for assault after a misunderstanding with a social worker. Agreeing that she had been wanting to do more work in the community, Naomi spoke to June about how the service provider had mistaken June's few belongings for junk, which had set the protective June off.
June began to be receptive until she learned that Naomi was a lawyer, knowledge that immediately made June's walls go back up. After Jacob said that the protocol-breaking social worker had been in the wrong, June figured her stuff had been searched for drugs, which she never used. Naomi was hesitant when June proclaimed that she should have hit the welfare provider harder, but Jacob recalled how Naomi had always said the system was gamed to criminalize poverty, and said sometimes people just needed someone to believe in them, like Jacob had when he'd first encountered Naomi. “You know I can hear everything y'all saying, right?” June exclaimed.
