On Beyond the Gates, Madison and Chelsea were glad that they had been able to talk through the fight they'd had about Chelsea ignoring Madison's feelings about her mother, Willow – Madison especially so, since she'd been afraid that she and Chelsea would end up giving each other the silent treatment for weeks. Chelsea appreciated that Madison saw she had just been trying to have a good relationship with her family. Madison admitted that, at one time, she would have walked away over feeling so misunderstood, but she felt safe enough to be herself with Chelsea and was actually glad they had quarreled, since they'd proven they could navigate choppy waters with respect. Chelsea glowed that Madison was much better for her than her past paramours, and she was giddy when Madison's no-show patient left the doctor available to play “hooky for a hookup.”

Naomi and Ashley were at Uptown, where the nurse explained how her last conversation with Derek had provided her with closure. Derek and Jacob arrived; Jacob offered to take Derek somewhere else, but Derek didn't think any of them should have to give up their favorite hangout. Ashley invited the men to join her and Naomi; when the conversation ended up centering around what kind of cane Derek should have, Ashley noted that everyone was trying to avoid talking about her and Derek's breakup.

Derek and Ashley affirmed to the Hawthornes that they had agreed to be friends, and all went well until Ashley brought up the fact that Shanice had told her about Sheryl coming on to Derek. The firefighter declined to comment, and Naomi escorted Ashley out. Later, Ashley regretted that her actions had derailed the foursome being able to be each other's “emotional support couples.” Naomi suddenly mentioned her couples therapy with Jacob and had to quickly assure Ashley that she'd had nothing to do with her and Jacob needing counseling.

Ashley and Naomi concurred that they were all growing and dealing with their “stuff.” Naomi swore that she could never quit her childhood friend Ashley. Meanwhile, Derek admitted that Ashley's feelings for Andre had killed the feelings he'dhad for Ashley – yet Jacob sussed out that Derek was hoping a friendship with Ashley might still lead to a reunion. Jacob was particularly emphatic that Derek not try to repeat the pattern of trying to make Ashley jealous by spending time with another woman, this time Sheryl. Derek realized he'd been seen through, and Jacob warned that bringing that kind of “mess” into his work situation would make things even worse for him.

Kat met with Martin, surprised that he had gotten in touch and not asked for her vote via robocall. She assumed her brother wanted to give her grief, but Martin revealed that his talk about family with had inspired him rethink some things. Martin stood by how he'd tried to protect Samantha but owned that he'd done so at Kat's expense. Kat was sorry for everything except the smack she'd talked about Eva. Martin began to panic when Kat said she had overheard Samantha and Eva talking about birth control, but Kat clarified that she had jumped to conclusions, and that the two were actually talking about the clinic Samantha wanted to start. Kat bristled that being wrong in front of Eva had been torture.

Martin didn't understand why Samantha had gone to Eva about the clinic; Kat reminded Martin that Eva's mom was now “a delusional psycho bitch with a checkbook.” Kat acknowledged that, for once, Eva had been “miraculously guilt free,” and that she had felt cowed when Samantha had pointed out that Kat had changed, and not for the better. Ms. Richardson said that if everyone was telling her the same thing about herself, she might have to start believing it at some point. Kat conceded that she didn't like how she behaved when it came to Eva and was afraid it was ruining her relationship with Tomás.

Kat told Martin how Tomás had proposed that they live together, with Martin expressing surprise that his “happily ever after” sister wasn't going for it. Conscious that Tomás was disappointed with her hesitation, Kat told her brother that everything was happening too fast. Besides, Kat sighed, if Tomás knew the real her, he probably wouldn't like her anymore. Martin knew that Kat could be “formidable,” but he also remembered all her cute and considerate moments from having grown up with her; he felt that Kat should let Tomás see all that she was. Kat received a call from Tomás, but she let it go to voice mail in favor of continuing her brother-sister time with Martin.

At the country club, Bill filled Tomás's ear with news about a colleague, Pauline, whose proposal and engagement video had gone viral. Bill intimated that Pauline might beat Tomás to reaching partner. Later, when Bill took a call, Tomás ran into Eva; they talked about the new book in the series they enjoyed, with Tomás saying the protagonist queen deserved a happy ending. The returning Bill saw the exchange and noted that Tomás breaking his niece's heart would definitely ruin his advancement opportunities.

Tomás promised that he and Eva were just friends, but Bill felt that Tomás juggling two sisters wouldn't inspire confidence in their clients. Bill was unimpressed with Tomás's photos from his getaway with Kat and sniffed that it wasn't the same as “putting a ring on it.” Tomás grumbled that he had asked Kat to live with him, but that she hadn't gone for it; Bill worried that Tomás had given Kat reason to doubt him. Tomás admitted that Kat was skittish because of the breakup of her parents' marriage, leading Bill to grant that he hadn't set the best example himself in leaving scars on all the Dupree women. That said, Bill still wanted stability projected at his firm and told Tomás to handle any walls Kat might put up like a leader.

Laura came upon Eva, who, seeing Laura's apprehension, assured Ms. Peterson that Leslie wasn't with her. Eva listened as Laura vented about Leslie thinking she was above the law now that she had money; Leslie couldn't just hit reset after trying to kill her, Laura insisted. Eva tried to assure Laura that Leslie's rudeness didn't mean she was still after her, and Laura couldn't deny that Leslie had never gotten her alone at WinterFest. However, Laura felt that was more because the Duprees had hired private security to make sure Leslie didn't harass her, a revelation which shocked Eva.

Eva told Laura how happy she'd been to be on her father's arm at WinterFest – and yet she was keenly aware that she only had Ted at the expense of his marriage to Nicole. She'd spent years dreaming about having a dad for all the big moments, which Laura understood; her mother had died when she was 6, and she knew what it was like to be raised by one parent. Laura was glad that Eva could make new memories with Ted...certainly memories that would be happier than the ones she'd made with Leslie.

Leslie sauntered into the police station with stereotypical donuts for cop Marcel. The flirting became heavy immediately: Leslie thanked Marcel for saving her from “bougie snob” Mona at WinterFest and championed him for bringing “the heat” to the event, while Marcel crooned that Leslie had no idea the kind of heat he could generate. Though Marcel mentioned his wife, Leslie purred that he talked more about his boat than his woman and proposed that, if they kept running into each other at their current rate, they might play a game of “good cop/bad cop.” Leslie seemed unconcerned when Marcel noted her audacity in showing up to a place where many wanted to outfit her in “jewelry” (handcuffs).

Eva connected with Leslie and repeated Laura's news that the Duprees had had a security guard on their payroll at WinterFest. Realizing they were talking about Marcel, Leslie grinned that the man had been clever; Eva worried that Marcel's attention to her mom may not be on the up-and-up. Leslie informed Eva that she had encouraged Marcel as a means of getting a cop in her back pocket, but Eva had seen how terrified Laura was of Leslie and feared that Leslie's attacks against the girl could well catch up with her. Leslie predicted that officer Marcel would “protect and serve me,” and she liked the idea that Eva could get information from her “new bestie” Laura.

Elon had seen the charged exchange between Marcel and Leslie and wondered what was going on. Marcel scoffed that Jacob hadn't been able to get the job done in terms of putting Leslie behind bars, so he was stepping in. When Elon complained that Jacob should be the one to apprehend Ms. Thomas, Marcel ruffled the chief's feathers by saying that Elon only wanted Jacob to get the win because he was his son. Marcel announced that he had Leslie on the hook and, pointing to his wedding ring, added that if Elon thought Marcel had actual designs on Leslie, then he was as crazy as the lady who had brought the donuts.
