On Beyond the Gates, Madison and Chelsea held hands at Uptown, looking into each others' eyes. Chelsea declared she was “legit fairy tale happy” and chalked it up to Madison's realness. Madison felt the same way, but wondered if they should be exercising at least a little restraint. Chelsea conceded the point and admitted that grandma Anita had questioned the speed of their relationship, but added, “when you know, you know.” The former model predicted that Madison would love Anita, winking that “the Anita Dupree effect” had them all bowing down.

Talk of Anita made Madison nervous, not only because of the larger-than-life way the world saw Anita, but because of how important she was to Chelsea. Madison pointed out that Chelsea's family set up press conferences while Madison saw her own family once a year. When Madison worried that she wouldn't measure up in Anita's eyes, Chelsea assured her that she had her own baked-in superlatives and that, in the end, Anita was just a loving grandmother despite the public persona. Chelsea felt that the Articulettes' comeback concert would be the perfect time for Madison to meet Anita, because she'd get to see both aspects of the lady.

A server came to take the women's orders and recognized Chelsea, gushing over her and requesting a selfie. Madison was perplexed as to how Chelsea's normal was being followed and emulated by millions of fans. Chelsea shrugged that social media had new influencers all the time; Madison marveled at how Chelsea inspired confidence and wanted to know if Chelsea missed modeling. Chelsea replied that she hadn't had time to miss it, since campaigns she'd shot before quitting were still going live. She added that, with ChelseaKat, she got to make beautiful things instead of being the beautiful thing.

When Chelsea said that her life was moving fast but it felt right, Madison analyzed their timing – was she the right person for Chelsea, or was her appearance in Chelsea's life just a coincidence? Chelsea didn't question it; she just was glad Madison was there, and she wanted to take advantage of every moment. Madison fretted that Chelsea might not find her as exciting when she got to know more about her. Chelsea again reminded Madison of all her good traits, including being a literal lifesaver.

Madison and Chelsea discussed what it was like for Chelsea to strike out on her own after having been managed by her mother for so long. Chelsea was happy that Madison was part of the changes in her life, and they kissed. When Chelsea noted that they again were focusing on her, she wanted to know more about Madison, who said she was more show than tell...which Madison wanted to do in bed. Just as they rose to leave, Chelsea noticed Allison at a booth watching them. Chelsea asked a smug-looking Allison if she was following her.

In Chicago, Anita ushered Tracy and Sharon into her hotel room for a “family meeting.” Tracy, whose manicure wasn't yet dry, wondered what had Anita's “couture lingerie in a twist.” La Dupree was concerned that something in their rehearsals was off: their voices were fine, but she felt they needed a new choreographer to modernize their act. Sharon refused, feeling that Anita was ready to push her and Tracy aside for something new and shiny again, while Tracy was of the opinion that their fans wanted to see their classic moves. Anita explained that fresh steps would give their repertoire a timeless feel.

Sharon snarked that Anita wanted them to twerk and charged Anita with bossing them around again so she could be the star. The singer likened Anita changing up their routine at the last minute to the way she had taken control of their hair and costumes during their original run; Sharon was torqued that Anita hadn't sat down and had a discussion with her and Tracy about any changes in direction. Anita tried to convey that their sound had been updated for the show, so their movement should also align with the times, but Sharon spat that Anita could take the stage without her and left.

Tracy was sure that Sharon would be back, but couldn't side with Anita about their routine being tired. Anita accused Sharon and Tracy of making her the villain again and not being willing to see that Anita just wanted them all to do their best work. Tracy concurred with Sharon – Anita was trying to reign over them again, and they weren't going to allow it the way they had when they were starting out and didn't know better. In addition, Sharon and Tracy had far more at stake in that they needed the money they'd make doing the show, plus they were hoping to achieve the success that Anita had achieved decades ago on her own.

Sharon returned and backed Tracy up: they didn't appreciate Anita throwing her weight around just because she was bankrolling their reunion efforts. “So you'll take my money, but not my input,” Anita snapped. Anita turned things around, saying she'd just pay for everything and go home so Tracy and Sharon could do the concert without her.

Tracy called Anita out for now making her and Sharon the villains, and for not realizing that they weren't there for a handout. Anita listened as Tracy presumed that Anita hated them because they, unlike the outside world, which worshipped Anita, knew who Anita really was. To Tracy, the comeback was a way for Anita to right a wrong, more than it was Anita wanting to show her co-singers that she actually respected them and their opinions. Anita denied the other women's claims that she thought they didn't have enough talent to make it; Tracy stressed that this was their last chance to make good.

Sharon held that they would have had a better chance at a reunion had Anita come to them 20 years earlier instead of waiting until Barbara's ghost had begun to haunt her. Tracy silently agreed as Sharon recognized that their feelings mattered, and that what Anita had done mattered. Anita allowed that she was responsible for most of what had happened, but didn't want to stay stuck in the past. If the magic she'd thought they could recapture was gone, Anita said, then there wasn't much point in doing the show. Tracy was aghast that Anita wanted to give up, and Sharon disdainfully observed that Anita was making decisions for them again. The livid Anita told the others that she wouldn't dare tell them how to do their show and ordered them to “get the hell out of my hotel suite.”

Martin came home, but when he heard Smitty in the other room, he whipped out his phone and pretended he was on a call. The congressman kept up the pretense after Smitty mouthed that he wanted to talk to him. Later, Martin stopped Samantha, who was ready to go out, when Samantha joked that she wasn't preparing to meet a stranger to play chess. Martin came down on her. “Too soon?” the girl asked sheepishly.

Samantha apologized for her ill-timed humor but was surprised that Martin was still on alert. She affirmed that she and Tyrell knew not to talk to strangers, yet she understood why Tyrell hadn't considered a gamer from his chess site a threat. The teen brought up how a famous chess player had put out an open invitation for anyone to join him in a park without incident; Martin assumed the celebrity had had a plainclothes detail with him. Samantha couldn't deny that Tyrell had brought a stranger into their home, but deemed “Kenneth” harmless enough.

After Samantha minimized her pop's intensity, Martin highlighted the number of crazy people in the world and expressed alarm over how cavalier Tyrell had been about “Kenneth.” Martin allowed his daughter to make her sojourn to the park but instructed her not to deviate from her route to and from home. Then, Martin summoned Marcel, who already knew that “Kenneth” had approached Tyrell. Martin scowled that “Kenneth” had checkmated himself – Martin wanted police protection for Smitty and the kids, which he would pay for. Marcel willingly replied that Martin's loved ones would be protected.

Jacob got a text from Smitty, who was on his way to Orphey Gene's. Meanwhile, Kat entered the diner and asked Jacob when they would finally be able to “put the cuffs on crazy Leslie.” Seeing Jacob's irritation that she was up in his face about the case again, Kat admitted that quitting wasn't in her, and brought the subject back around to Leslie. Jacob revealed that he'd just learned that the scratch on Leslie's helmet matched the one shown on the security footage of Laura's sideswiping, causing Kat to spout, “We've got that bitch dead to rights!”

The detective continued that it was yet to be proven that Leslie was riding the motorcycle that was seen to run Laura off the road. “What more do we need?” the exasperated Kat sighed. “For her murderous tail to have taken a selfie while she ran Laura down?” Jacob shared Kat's frustration but said that surpassing reasonable doubt wasn't as easy as it was on TV. “The law is stupid,” Kat sniffed, with Jacob reminding her the law had been designed to protect the innocent. Kat watched as Smitty entered and gave Jacob a knowing look, prompting Kat to ask what was going on between the men.

After Jacob said that he was helping Smitty with a story, Kat departed, and Jacob could tell from Smitty's comportment that something was wrong between him and Martin. Smitty was caught between feeling that Martin was in the thick of Marcel's shady dealings and wondering if he was just seeing what he wanted to see. Jacob suggested that Martin hire a lawyer and counseled Smitty that they'd have to part ways if Martin turned out to be involved in anything illegal. Smitty questioned whether Jacob's lawfulness extended to his chief of police father and if he had already told Jacob too much. Jacob promised that justice was justice, whether that applied to Martin or Elon.

Jacob took a call and came back to Smitty, saying they might need to reconsider working together: he had just learned that Martin had asked Marcel for police protection. At first, Smitty wondered if there was some sort of politics-related threat, but Jacob didn't think Martin would go to his local precinct for a matter of national security. “What is Martin hiding?!” Smitty asked, angry. Smitty was appalled that Martin had let him leave the house without mentioning that their kids were in danger.

Though Jacob deduced that they didn't have all the facts, Smitty couldn't reconcile trying to find out what Marcel had done to Martin with Martin trusting Marcel enough to keep their family safe. Smitty agreed with Jacob that it was time to stop tiptoeing around Martin and not let up until Martin told him the truth. Meanwhile, Martin followed Samantha to the park and found her showing “Kenneth” how to change a setting on his phone.
