On Beyond the Gates, Sharon was not on board with Anita doing a solo number after how difficult it had been reaching a place where the trio could perform together. Anita swore the standout moment had been the idea of Jim Price, the talent agent, but Sharon felt as if history were repeating itself, with Anita putting herself over the group. Explaining that she could have just gone ahead and added the number without consulting the others, Anita tried to impress upon Sharon that she didn't want to be that woman anymore; she wanted Tracy and Sharon's input and was willing to stick to the act's existing set list if they preferred.

Tracy thought that Anita could book a separate solo concert if she really wanted to re-explore that part of her career. Anita admitted that her family knew all the Articulettes material by heart, but they had never heard her perform on her own, which was why she wanted to take Jim's opportunity. Sharon softened and suggested that all three of them get a solo turn in the spotlight to make things fair. Anita loved the idea, but Tracy was fine with being a back-up singer for the night and accused Sharon of pettiness for wanting her own moment, too. Sharon gave in and declared she and Tracy would be cheering Anita on from the wings.

Dani continued trying to convince Martin to come to the Articulettes show. Martin continued to state he'd be a distraction and exited, leaving Dani to smirk to Nicole that Martin actually thought his word was final. Nicole was willing to hear her sister's “divide and conquer” plan.

Smitty told Vernon and Tyrell that he still had reservations about attending the concert. Vernon took Tyrell out to dinner at Orphey Gene's to give Smitty space to reconsider, where Tyrell spotted Jessica at a table. Jessica coldly reported she had been away participating in pre-college programs – and that no one had stabbed her in the back since Tyrell had. Tyrell owned that he had accused Jessica of setting him up for another potential photo disaster because he hadn't been able to believe that the most popular girl in school could actually like him.

Tyrell cited his parents' failure to communicate as the reason he realized he hadn't done so with Jessica, either. He apologized for going off on Jessica after she kissed him; he had just been so much in shock that he hadn't been thinking. Jessica wasn't sure yet that she could give Tyrell the do-over he wanted and walked away.

Andre solemnly flipped between photos of Dani and Ashley on his tablet, then went to the diner, where he ran into Vernon, who was waiting for Tyrell to finish his conversation with Jessica. When Vernon asked Andre what his intentions were toward Dani, Andre stepped carefully but said he was grateful for any time Dani wanted to spend with him. He appreciated Dani's authenticity, which Vernon appreciated; however, Vernon suggested that Andre “make it good” and advised him not to do anything to change his favorable opinion of him.

Vernon asked Tyrell about Jessica; he merely said she was a friend. The patriarch deemed friends important and let Tyrell know he was his friend as well; Tyrell could lean on him during the current strife between his parents. The teen told his great-grandfather that not only had Martin and Smitty been somewhat ambiguous about the reasons for their split, but Nicole had danced around the subject as well. Vernon upset Tyrell when he observed that everyone was just thinking of his and Samantha's welfare; the boy didn't like being told what he could and couldn't deal with.

Tyrell divulged that he and Samantha had had to handle plenty when they were in the foster care system – all without the benefit of adult protection – and he resented that he and his sister were being treated like babies. Vernon confirmed that there was indeed more to the story, but said that Tyrell was going to have to get the additional information from his fathers, because it wasn't Vernon's place to reveal it. Tyrell wasn't thrilled, but he was grateful when Vernon added that he was willing to tell Smitty and Martin that Tyrell was more mature than they were giving him credit for. When Tyrell wanted to know how to plead his own case, Vernon observed that Tyrell would be an adult in a year and said that he had already proven himself to be a man.

Dani waited for Martin and called him a “selfish son-of-a-bitch.” Martin was taken aback; Dani understood the hard time her “congressman nephew” was going through but was tired of everyone having to walk on eggshells with him. She leaned on Martin to “put on [his] big boy boxers,” because not everything was about him – especially Anita's show. When Dani pointed out that his constituents viewed him as willing to do the hard tasks – and that surely Martin could therefore sit through a concert – Martin acknowledged he had been selfish and agreed to cheer Anita on with his kids.

Smitty received a visit from Nicole, who had a hard time navigating her son and son-in-law not being together. Nicole assured Smitty that Martin regretted keeping him and the kids in the dark about the danger “Kenneth” had presented; Smitty asserted that he had a right to his feelings about being lied to. Nicole had similar feelings about Vernon and Anita instructing Martin to stay quiet, but Smitty held that Martin could have made his own choices – and maybe part of the reason he hadn't was out of fear that, as a white man, Smitty might not have understood the intricacies of the race-based hate crime Martin and Vernon had endured.

Nicole couldn't be sure that Joey would call in his marker for helping Martin, but Smitty was certain of it and stressed over what the ripple effects would be for his family. When Smitty asked Nicole if she had been able to forgive Ted for keeping his own damaging secrets, Nicole had to admit that it was easier to have compassion for a son than a husband. She noted that Ted had instigated his situation himself, while Martin had been forced into it by criminal offenders. Smitty remained unable to see why Martin hadn't come to him; Nicole tried to get across that Martin had probably been too ashamed to – and fearful that Smitty would feel differently about him once he knew the truth.

Smitty hated how Samantha and Tyrell were suffering because of the separation, but he couldn't bring himself to take back a man he didn't trust. He concurred with Nicole's contention that Martin had been trying to ensure Smitty's innocence so that he'd be there to raise the kids if Martin faced legal repercussions, but Smitty categorized that as logic – and feelings didn't attune to logic. Nicole was as angry as Smitty was that Vernon and Anita had kept them in the dark, but didn't think prolonging punishment of them was going to do either of them any good. She also advised against missing a once-in-a-lifetime event like the Articulettes reunion because of that anger. Smitty relented – but, to avoid any awkwardness in front of the kids, he opted to have a talk with Martin first.

Martin came home at Smitty's request. Smitty promised that nothing bad had happened to him or the kids – he had just been getting pressured about coming to the concert and wanted to know if Martin would be okay with his attendance, for the family's sake. Martin revealed that he had decided to go himself, and the estranged spouses concurred that they could put their differences aside for one night to support Anita. They shared an uncomfortable parting after saying they would see each other at the concert hall.

Dani moved on to the Dupree mansion, where she found Andre waiting for her. “Don't tell me you're here asking my dad for my hand in marriage,” Dani asked when Andre was coy about the reason for his presence. When Andre froze up, Dani laughed that she had been joking and proclaimed that she was no more ready to get married than Andre was. Andre copped to being rattled after an intense chat with Vernon, prompting Dani to cattily ask if Vernon had questioned Andre about Ashley. Getting serious, Dani reminded Andre that she had been up front about her lingering – if unwanted – feelings for Bill, so Andre was free to come clean about whatever feelings he had for the nurse.

Andre didn't specify, but he also didn't disagree when Dani referred to what they had as a “transitional relationship.” Dani tried to tempt Andre with the offer of having sex in her parents' house, but just then Anita arrived, having called for a private consultation with the photographer. “And they say I'm too old for him,” Dani grinned, scandalizing her mom. After Dani excused herself, Anita gave Andre an assignment but walked in to the living room to find Sharon short of breath. Though Sharon could barely speak, she managed to get out that she couldn't do the show; she ran out as the concerned Tracy and Anita watched.
