On Beyond the Gates, Ted wanted to get Eva dessert at the country club, but Eva saw Kat coming. Kat smugly remarked that Eva had picked up where she'd left off between staying at Ted's hotel and taking on her old job – plus intimated that Ted's illegitimate daughter wasn't ready to fill her shoes. Ted replied to Kat's comment that everything was moving on as if she didn't exist by saying he had room in his life for both of his daughters, but Kat accused Ted of being unable to be alone. She didn't think Eva was a satisfactory substitute for Nicole and warned that Eva was still connected to Leslie.

When Eva countered that she was doing her best to live her life without her mom, Kat fumed that Eva had come to town to help Leslie ruin Ted and kept silent about what Leslie had done to Laura. This was the first Ted had heard about Eva covering for Leslie; Kat insisted that Eva could have done the right thing in exposing Leslie, but didn't. Eva conceded that she'd had her suspicions about Leslie, but the cops had not been able to find any evidence directly linking Leslie to Laura's attacks. “What could I possibly have given the police?” Eva wanted to know, prompting Kat to flash back to finding Leslie's motorcycle helmet and gloves under Eva's bed.

Eva was adamant that she'd been trying to make peace with Kat, who would only use her words against her. Kat took Eva's dare to show her the proof, but Ted ran interference, telling the girls that, if they left “Dana” out of the equation, they'd see it. “See what?” the exasperated Eva and Kat asked in unison. Ted said he could detect the intelligence and determination of one girl in the other and invited Kat to join him and Eva for dinner. Kat, knowing that Eva had tried to kiss Tomás, rubbed the special meal she was going to have with him in Eva's face. As Kat sauntered out, Ted saw “Kenneth” in the banquet room and suddenly asked Eva for a raincheck.

Martin hoped that Smitty had moved on from his article about Marcel, but Martin's face fell when Smitty relayed how intricate Marcel's misdeeds were shaping up to be; Smitty admitted that crooked cops were a major factor in why he'd become an investigative reporter. Smitty was hesitant to tell Martin what he had uncovered because the last time he had, Martin had experienced “one of [his] episodes.” Martin claimed that triggers weren't necessary for his moments and that he had called a therapist, like Smitty had asked. However, Martin became animated when Smitty revealed that Marcel had pocketed $500,000 in cash.

Smitty couldn't understand why Martin was concerned, since Marcel had no connection to their family, nor their extended family. When Martin simply said he had a bad feeling about Marcel, Smitty asked for elaboration and called Martin out after he chose to be evasive instead. Smitty nearly begged Martin not to leave when he got a text calling him away; Martin would only say that no article was worth risking their future – which caused Smitty to recall a past event where Martin yelled at him to stop pushing.

Naomi finished giving a massage to Jacob, who was stressed because of what Smitty had told him about Marcel's unexpected windfalls and his ties to Joey. After Jacob described the contradiction between Elon saying Joey had functioned as an informant for Marcel and the money handed to Marcel going into his personal account, Naomi surmised that Marcel must have duped Elon. Jacob figured that Elon hadn't caught on because of how long he had known Marcel, but Naomi worried that people would think Elon was in on things somehow...or that he had simply turned a blind eye.

Jacob met with Smitty, who described how Martin freaked out every time Smitty mentioned Marcel. Smitty expressed his thought that Martin was afraid of Marcel for some reason. The reporter told the detective about Martin's recurring nightmares; Smitty had assumed there had been an undealt-with childhood trauma, but had come to believe that whatever ordeal Martin had endured had been more recent. Jacob was surprised to hear that Martin had also begun having waking visions at the mention of Marcel's name.

Smitty added that his latest bust-up with Martin had brought back a memory: one night, Martin had returned from a political event with Vernon severely shaken – and wearing different clothes than what he'd had on when he left. Martin had said he'd had a flat tire; when Smitty had seen how rattled and exhausted Martin was, Smitty had joked that Martin had pushed the car from the capital himself, causing Martin's flare-up about not pushing.

Jacob couldn't understand why Smitty had never brought up the incident with Martin again. Smitty admitted that he'd come to realize there was a part of him that didn't want to know what had happened. Plus, Smitty noted, the event Martin had attended with Vernon had taken place mere days before Marcel deposited the half million. Jacob relayed that Marcel's reputation was beyond reproach and couldn't see him hassling Martin. Smitty couldn't be sure that Martin hadn't witnessed some kind of violent crime...he only knew that if Marcel was after Martin, he would bring him down.

Dani served Bill a drink and shared her observation that his cane suited him. Bill griped that Hayley had poured out all their alcohol; Dani snarked how terrible it was that his new wife was trying to keep him alive. Bill noted that everything in the house looked the same, while Dani said she wasn't about to rid herself of items she felt connected to because of their divorce, asking why her ex had really come by. Bill became vulnerable as he admitted that during all his time in the hospital, he'd felt trapped in his body and been terrified he'd never be able to walk or talk again – all of which Dani, who knew him better than anybody, had been able to sense in just one moment of eye contact.

Bill credited Dani with willing him back and said he couldn't get that fact off his mind; Dani seemed to anticipate that Bill was about to reconcile, but instead he acknowledged how much he had wronged her and gently said his life was now with Hayley. Bill was sorry for how he had handled things with Dani and confessed that he had felt trapped in their marriage, which he didn't think she had noticed. The former Mrs. Hamilton responded that she had indeed seen trouble coming but had attributed it to a mid-life crisis she was sure their union could withstand.

The lawyer granted that he had told himself there was no more love with Dani, but had only done so to avoid owning up to the hurt he was causing her. He understood why Dani saw Hayley as their breaking point, but explained that he had been going through the motions with Dani for years; Dani demanded to know why Bill had never said anything. Bill didn't deny that he had broken Dani, or that he'd preferred their post-split battles to his guilt. He faulted himself for not seeing Dani's pain. He was remorseful that he hadn't honored Dani and the family they had made by ending things so badly.

Bill worried that his apology was just going to throw Dani off center again when she seemed to be back on solid ground. Dani, barely able to hold back her tears, finally said that she had been waiting and waiting for Bill to say these things, as she'd been made to feel that their love had been something she'd made up. Ms. Dupree had gone on thinking something was deficient in her and wondered why Bill had chosen that evening to address their breakup. Bill tried to ascribe his penance to the stroke, but Dani knew better; Bill divulged that a case from the past had unsettled him. When Bill wanted to know if he and Dani could go forward as friends without the vitriol, Dani asserted that there were still going to be times she'd feel a need to protect herself, which Bill promised to respect. Dani was glad Bill had survived his stroke, and let herself sob after he left.

Hayley stopped by Bill's office to bring him home, but Caroline reported that he had left some time before. The newlywed Mrs. Hamilton tried to play off Bill's sudden absence and ran into Vernon getting off the elevator when she was ready to depart. The two had a brief, tense exchange; once Hayley exited, Vernon told a flustered Caroline that he had an appointment with Bill that he was early for. Tomás, whom Vernon remembered as “Kat's young man”, arrived and offered to help, but Vernon said his business was one only Bill could take care of.

Elon walked in, after which both he and Vernon gently nudged Tomás, who had a date with Kat, out of the room – however, Tomás asked Caroline why the chief of police and the former senator would want to meet with Bill. Caroline intuited that one of the Duprees must be in trouble. After Caroline went home for the day, Joey and Marcel joined Vernon and Elon, with Marcel noticing that Martin was absent. Vernon said that absence was purposeful. Elon sensed that "Kenneth's" reappearance had brought Martin's PTSD to the surface, while Joey wanted to be sure it was actually "Kenneth” who had come back to town. Vernon assured the casino owner that Martin had confirmed it and that “Kenneth” wanted more money for not going public with his story.

Vernon worried that Smitty's digging could unearth things, but avowed that he and Martin could handle him; Elon didn't want his son, Jacob, to ever know what had happened that night. Marcel groused that their problem could run his retirement, while Joey smirked that if things weren't seen to correctly, Marcel could be making gin in a prison toilet. Ted suddenly walked in, expecting to find Bill but discovering the other men waiting for the attorney. Vernon was stunned to hear that Ted had recognized “their friend,” and Ted realized from everyone's calm reaction that they already knew “Kenneth” had returned. Ted didn't want them to make a move without him and was determined to protect his son.

Bill strolled in and spat that Ted didn't need to be there; Ted recalled that, “the last time,” Bill had needed Ted's services. After Ted scoffed that he didn't want to be beholden to Bill again, Joey observed that Ted would be beholden to all of them – but more importantly, the group needed to hold together in order to “get away clean.” Ted confirmed that he was with them...when, unexpectedly, Martin burst into the office. The congressman was furious that Vernon was pulling his father into the situation – only for Vernon to tell Martin that Ted had been involved from the beginning.

Martin, who had come to see Bill and hadn't been aware of the meeting with the others, wailed that it was all too much and that he didn't want Vernon fighting his battles. Vernon maintained that it was his battle as well, and Ted wanted to keep Martin out of it. When Martin emphatically said everything began and ended with him, and Marcel agreed, Martin had another flashback, and Bill ordered Martin out of the room. Ted carefully led Martin away, whom Marcel, in particular, watched.

Hayley arrived at Dani's; Dani figured Hayley had lost track of Bill and had come to her house looking for him. As Dani and Hayley argued about Bill, Dani added that, given the panicked look on Hayley's face, she had been Hayley a year before. Dani was certain that Bill would get bored with Hayley, especially after her pregnancy rendered her unable to have sex. Hayley retorted that Bill would never take back up with Dani...then winced over in pain. “Did I hurt the imaginary fetus?” Dani asked, rolling her eyes. But Hayley didn't look like she was pretending.

Tomás greeted Kat at the club, where she had arranged a “no work, no drama” evening to show her appreciation for how understanding he had been with her. She had even charged the chef with recreating a dish Tomás had raved about enjoying in Spain. Tomás then spied Eva at another table reading a book. Kat said that Tomás had come into her life at one of its worst times and had even met the moment of her not being ready for sex. Tomás swore that Kat's readiness was a given. Just as Kat said she had one more surprise for Tomás, Eva stopped by the table, conceding that she couldn't pretend they hadn't seen each other. Kat sent Eva on her way after Eva and Tomás talked about the book series they were both into. “Why do you do that?” Tomás questioned, seeing the look of disgust on Kat's face. “We were having such a good time.”

Kat was steamed that Eva had crashed what Eva had known was a special night. Tomás snapped that Kat had planned their date to one-up Eva, but then caught himself and suggested that he and Kat just pretend Eva hadn't been there. Kat came around and admitted that she loved...being with Tomás. She was ready to have her first time with him that night.
