On Beyond the Gates, Martin had another nightmare involving driving at night and car lights, accompanied by sounds of blows landing and a voice saying, “Let's see what color's your money.” He woke with a start.

Leslie lumbered into Orphey Gene's, but Jan, who had heard everything from Mona, rejected Leslie. Ms. Thomas figured Mona had her head up the Duprees' behinds, but couldn't understand what Jan was so upset about. Jan refused to resume their friendship, aghast that Leslie had used her own daughter to get what she wanted. As Jan raged about how glad she was that Ashley hadn't been raised with “twisted values” like Leslie's, Martin watched from a table, and a separate man in a leather jacket watched from the counter.

The man listened as Leslie pleaded her case to the unmoving Jan, describing how Ted had loved her, yet dumped her and wanted her to get rid of their baby. Jan became emotional when Leslie reminded Jan how she had also had a baby as a young woman, though Jan replied that she had never lied to Ashley about her father or cast her in a revenge plot. Leslie didn't act out of love, Jan held, she acted out of hate – and Jan didn't want a friend like that.

Vernon joined Martin at his booth as the leather jacket man observed. Martin told his grandfather that his dreams were getting worse and that he couldn't help feeling that his subconscious was trying to warn him about something. The congressman added that he had decided not to run for president after all – seeing Nicole's suffering had convinced him; his mother didn't need the public scrutiny of a presidential campaign on top of what she was going through. After having seen Ted's secret exposed in the spotlight, Martin realized he couldn't let his own secret come out the same way. Vernon predicted that the nightmares would likely cease now that Martin had opted not to campaign.

However, Martin felt there was more to the night terrors than just his political ambitions. He wasn't particularly detailed in describing the images, but he was clear on what the voice had said about money. Vernon and Martin both continued to monitor the diner as Martin went over how terrified and guilty he felt upon waking up from the dreams.

Derek and Ashley had an awkward exchange over breakfast and who got first dibs on the shower. Ashley was surprised to hear that Derek was going to shoot pool with friends after work and wondered if he was avoiding the fact that they hadn't made love the previous evening, which they usually did. She noted that they had never “not connected” until they moved in together. Derek wasn't worried and dropped his shirt on the floor on his way to the bathroom.

Ashley took a call from Jan, who filled her in about their former friend Leslie stirring up so much trouble for Naomi's aunt, then changed the subject to Derek and Ashley's cohabitation. Ashley granted that she had been used to her and Jan living together all through Ashley's childhood and surmised that she was having trouble adjusting to living with a guy. Jan assured her daughter that she and Derek would be just fine. Later, Derek emerged from the shower and thought that one time missing lovemaking wasn't a problem – it would only become a problem if a lack of relations persisted. He told Ashley how lonely the bed looked; she was of the same opinion, and together they chose to make the bed feel loved.

Dani visited Nicole and found her in “pajama chic.” Nicole had cancelled all her appointments, and Dani understood that a man could drive even a strong woman to despair. Having sat in darkened rooms and broken things after Bill left her, Dani advised Nicole not to let Ted dim her light. Nicole recognized her period of mourning as normal, while Dani bet that the details about her and Anita coming down on Ted and Eva would make Nicole feel better.

Nicole didn't want to hear about Eva or Ted, and preferred that she and all the Duprees hibernate. Dani objected and exhorted her sister to prove she was better than Ted, Leslie, and Eva by rejoining the world. Nicole remembered Dani hadn't been as rational after Bill's betrayal; Dani grinned that Nicole was a wiser person than she was. Dani suggested that Nicole adopt her “fake it 'til you make it” strategy and instructed Nicole to get dressed – they were going out.

Eva met Ted at the country club, thinking they would be more welcome having breakfast elsewhere. Ted announced that he was through hiding and that, as a member, he and his daughter had a right to patronize the establishment. Eva recoiled at the disapproving stares of diners, but Ted had Eva take his arm, and he escorted her to a table. Eva tried to brave the gawping of Anastasia, the town gossip; Ted wanted people to get used to the sight of him with his daughter – and he'd developed a plan to ease Eva into the next phase of her life.

Ted had rented Eva a booth at the swankiest hair salon in D.C.; Eva wanted to leave hairstyling behind and continue being a personal assistant, but Ted informed her that it wasn't a position she'd be able to obtain, considering how her previous one had ended. Eva absorbed that and came around to the idea of styling hair again. Meanwhile, entering the club, Dani encouraged Nicole to hold her head up and order breakfast like it was any other day. Nicole did her best, but froze when she saw her husband and his illegitimate daughter sitting there.

Vanessa, seated nearby, pulled Nicole away from Eva and Ted while Dani reamed them out. Nicole confessed to Vanessa that her rational mind knew that Ted should develop a relationship with his long-lost child, but seeing them together was painful. Ted reminded Dani that she had been the one to tell him to man up, which was why he was out with his daughter. Dani scowled at Eva, reiterating that she would never be part of the Dupree family.

Dani and Vanessa were more outraged by Ted and Eva's presence than Nicole was; just then Anastasia dropped by their table and dripped sarcasm, talking about how Nicole's plight was the hottest topic on the tennis courts and at the spa. After the gossipmonger got in a parting shot about the Dupree women knowing how to pick men, Nicole wanted to leave, but Vanessa and Dani implored Nicole to hold fast. Dani tried to keep a straight face when she found out from Nicole that Andre had known about Ted's affair weeks before it became public knowledge.

Anastasia made her way to Eva and introduced herself, taking a swipe at both Eva's situation and her wardrobe. Once the badmouther sashayed away, Eva proclaimed to Ted that she didn't belong at the club and walked out. Anastasia returned, seeming to imply to Ted that she'd keep quiet about Eva's humiliation if he'd set her up with some lip filler at his plastic surgery clinic.

Ted inadvertently interrupted Dani and Vanessa rallying around Nicole – despite Nicole's support system shunning Ted, he apprised his wife that she'd be seeing him around the club, the hospital, and spending time with their children. Ted wanted to make it known far and wide that he planned to earn everyone's forgiveness and show them that he'd learned from his mistakes; Nicole sat stone-faced as Ted promised they would be together on their next anniversary.

Eva found Leslie at Orphey Gene's and conceded that Leslie had been right about Eva not fitting in with the Duprees. When Eva said she missed being with her mother, Leslie concurred, but didn't want to hear about how Eva hadn't wanted to hurt her father. Leslie blew up about how she had been the victim in the situation, not caring that the other customers could hear her. Eva told the indignant Leslie that, just because she'd attempted to derail Leslie's plans, it didn't mean Eva didn't love Leslie. Eva begged to come home, but Leslie fumed about how Eva had betrayed her with the father, who was going to set her up in an apartment. Leslie angrily told Eva not to give her another thought and moved to another part of the diner.

Martin, having seen Leslie's attack on Eva, approached and deemed it way out of line. He said that, whatever Eva had done, she deserved better from the woman who had raised her. Martin was sorry that Eva had had to endure the tongue-lashing. Fighting back tears, Eva nodded and tried to leave with dignity. Then, Vernon advanced on “Dana, Leslie, or whatever name you're using today,” expressing pity that she had driven away the only person who actually loved her. Following, Jan took Leslie to task for turning her back on her own daughter. Leslie went off, yelling that she still had some surprises for “you, Mona, Ted, the Duprees, and every damn body in here!”

Once Leslie, Jan, Martin, and Vernon had cleared out, the leather-jacketed man took out his phone and followed suit.

Vanessa got a text from Joey that read, “Hope you dreamed about me last night.” She smiled, but called Doug, who hadn't come home the night before. Doug, sitting at the gambling table, apologized and lied that he'd been hanging out with a friend. After Doug hung up with Vanessa, Joey found him trying to leave and declared that they had a problem to solve – Doug kept losing more and more cash instead of paying Joey back. Joey was glad to see Doug at the casino, since it meant Joey didn't have to confront Doug at his home, which would no doubt trouble Vanessa.

A desperate Doug insisted that his luck would change; if it didn't, Doug would barely be able to pay a fraction of his debt. Joey said he regretted ever taking a chance on Doug, calling the on-leave doctor a loser who would probably get arrested if he tried to sell the hospital's meds on the street. When Joey proposed that Doug get the money from the rich Vanessa, Doug refused to call his wife, prompting Joey to whip out his phone and offer to make the call himself. Joey relented, but caused Doug's eyebrows to raise when he said he'd gotten to know Vanessa and found her to be... “understanding.”

Doug explained how his cast would be off in a few weeks, at which time he could once again perform surgery and earn money to pay Joey. But Joey was out of patience and announced he would break Doug's other hand if Doug said anything more. Joey thought that Vanessa had something far more valuable to him than money – her real estate firm. Doug clued in that Joey wanted to launder money through his wife's business and asserted that Vanessa would never do anything illegal. However, Joey declared that she didn't need to know about it – and that Doug's debt would disappear under his plan. Doug declined it, so Joey cut Doug off at the casino and smoldered that if Doug didn't repay him with interest in one week, “you can just imagine what'll happen.”
