On Beyond the Gates, neither Derek nor Ashley had slept well, and Ashley chose a regular get-together with Naomi over breakfast with Derek. She looked on disapprovingly as he drank orange juice out of the container; he remarked that he hadn't felt he was walking on eggshells while living with his roommates. They quibbled over housekeeping despite each working long shifts – then Ashley admitted the apartment was her first grown-up home, and she was proud of it, having picked it and every aspect of its décor. Derek recalled that Ashley had picked him, too; she softened, and they proposed working out a schedule. However, Ashley didn't think Derek's joke about programming in cigar-smoking poker buddies was funny, and Derek lumbered out.

Chelsea ran into Naomi at Orphey Gene's; the former model presumed that their father's involvement in covering up Ted's affair with Leslie was probably spreading as much as news of the affair itself. Naomi reported that Bill had texted her back regarding his supposed threats to Leslie but had only vaguely said that Naomi should know better than to believe Leslie.

Bill brought “Dana” into his office; she chucked a cease-and-desist order he had filed against her on his desk. He called her broadcasting what he'd supposedly done to her slander, causing her to snarl that she had waited 20 years to talk about him threatening to kidnap and sell Ted's baby if she had it. Bill felt he had the upper hand in that a jury would believe him over a women with several aliases, but Leslie challenged him to “do your worst...and I'll do mine.”

Andre saw Eva with a frosted cupcake at Uptown; she revealed that it was her birthday. Though she was celebrating alone, she told Andre about how Ted had found her accommodations and employment, and how Martin had invited her to dinner with his family. The progress coming so soon gave Eva hope. Andre noted how much Nicole was hurting; Eva looked sheepish when Andre brought up that causing Nicole pain had been part of the plan. Eva desperately wanted Ted and Nicole to work things out, having seen their brand of love firsthand.

When talk turned to Leslie, Eva sighed that her mom hadn't forgiven her. Andre called Leslie's withholding of forgiveness gaslighting, since Leslie should have been asking Eva for it. Eva could understand how Leslie felt betrayed, but assured Andre that even if Leslie concocted a new scheme against the Richardsons as a loyalty test, Eva wouldn't go for it. She wanted to get to know her father. Later, Eva got a text from Leslie demanding that they meet at Orphey Gene's right away.

At Ashley's, Naomi spoke of how June was in the hospital with pneumonia, but noticed Ashley's down mood. Ashley confessed that living with Derek wasn't what she had hoped it would be. Meanwhile, Jacob met with Derek at Orphey Gene's, explaining how cohabitation with Ashley was tense and uptight; the scene intercut with Ashley and Derek talking to Naomi and Jacob, respectively, with the couple separately conceding some flaws but expressing disappointment that they didn't feel excited to see each other.

Later, Ashley saw Andre at the hospital and detailed how, still being a newbie nurse, she had been shadowing different specialists to determine one for herself. There seemed to be a charge between them as they discussed how they'd delivered the baby in the elevator, but Ashley's face fell when Andre asked about Derek. She lied and said things were going great, sharing a home with him.

Following, Derek brought Ashley a plush bunny rabbit and apologized for starting the day on the wrong foot. He had an idea which might solve their problems: they could get a bigger apartment, or a house, which would give them more space and privacy when they needed it. Ashley was of the opinion that square footage wasn't the real issue between them, but couldn't elaborate because she was expected on rounds. She kissed Derek on the cheek and left him to his thoughts.

Ted (now played by Keith D. Robinson) welcomed Kat into his hotel room. She informed her father that she was still mad at him; Ted just wanted them both to be open and honest with each other. “For a change,” Kat sniffed. Ted invited Kat to ask questions – she wanted to know how Ted could have taken up with a “skank” like Leslie when he had had the wonderful Nicole. Ted described how “Dana” had been warm and carefree at the time of the affair, while Nicole, suffering through multiple miscarriages, had closed him off. Ted realized he had been a “selfish bastard” to seek from “Dana” what Nicole had no longer been able to give.

Kat asked if Ted would have left Nicole for Leslie if Nicole hadn't become pregnant with Kat – was she the only reason her parents' marriage had survived? Ted was reasonably sure he would have stayed with Nicole, though he'd equated Leslie's lightheartedness with love at a time when both he and Nicole were scared that Kat wouldn't be born. Noting that Leslie had simultaneously gotten pregnant, Kat chided Ted, a doctor, for not “wrap[ping] it up.” Ted acknowledged that he had been careless, but also that the loving father and husband Kat had seen all her life had been real. Kat burst into tears and hugged her dad tightly, then caught herself, affirming that one conversation wasn't going to make everything right. Ted understood and gave Kat a room key...which he was also making available for Nicole.

Chelsea joined Kat at Uptown and heard Kat's admission that she had actually begun to feel sorry for Ted during their talk, which conflicted Kat. Kat wanted to continue being furious with Ted...but he was her dad. “Welcome to my world,” Chelsea lamented, referring to Bill. Kat wasn't sure how either of them could fall in love and sustain a relationship given the poor examples their fathers had set. Chelsea observed that Ted was making an effort – and at least, unlike Bill, Ted hadn't married his mistress. Kat allowed that, for whatever impression Ted had once had about Leslie, he fully knew what she was about in the present.

Kat had gotten the feeling from her conversation with Ted that Leslie had played Ted from the start – like when she turned up pregnant after claiming she'd been on birth control. Chelsea and Kat went over how Leslie had befriended Mona, which had gotten Eva into position when Laura had her accident and needed a temporary replacement. Kat recalled how the police had never caught the person who had run Laura off the road and pointed her finger at Leslie and Eva. Chelsea wanted Kat to slow down, but Kat was curious if the motorcyclist caught on video the night Laura was hospitalized would be seen wearing Eva's boots. Kat sprang up and out, wanting to tell Ted what his new daughter was capable of.

Ted answered a summons from Bill, who wanted to know what Ted was doing to corral Leslie. Bill was upset to learn that Ted, who was focusing on repairing the damage to his family, had been avoiding Leslie; Bill was worried about what Leslie might do next. Bill instructed Ted to warn Leslie that he could press charges for blackmail if she tried anything, based on the payouts Ted had given her. Mr. Hamilton had protected Mr. Richardson, Bill said, and now it was time for Ted to return the favor. Naomi walked in and was sure that the two were discussing Leslie.

Bill told Ted that his daughters remained unconvinced that Bill hadn't promised harm to Leslie's baby. Naomi listened as Bill intervened with Leslie on Ted's behalf, calling the young Leslie irrational. Ted said he hadn't been witness to Bill's meeting with “Dana,” but assured Naomi that he wouldn't have gone to Bill if he'd thought Bill would actually hurt Leslie or her child. Naomi still couldn't be certain and excused herself to see June at the hospital.

June was in “heaven” over how hospital staff had been pampering her and got a smile out of Naomi when she asked when “that hot cop” Jacob was coming back to see her. Jacob entered, and Naomi produced the ratty paper June had dropped at the diner. There were kids' photos on it; June said she didn't know who they were, she just liked the images. However, she subtly caressed the pic with her thumb.

A hopeful Eva met with Leslie only to be faced with Bill's document that promised legal action if Leslie said anything more about him in public. Eva thought the order wasn't completely unexpected; Leslie griped that Bill was trying to run her out of town again. Eva felt let down when Leslie's reason for seeing her was to request that Eva have Ted tell Bill to back off, not to mark Eva's birthday. Frosty, Leslie remarked that they had already celebrated Eva's day...before Eva had stabbed her in the back. Eva had wanted at least a quick commemoration, but Leslie said she had been so preoccupied with Ted and Bill's threats that she hadn't even realized what the day was.

Leslie tried to tempt Eva with the possibility of healing their relationship if Eva would mediate with Ted, but Eva was steadfast. She wouldn't get in the middle and felt that the cease-and-desist order paled in comparison to the charges Leslie could otherwise be facing. Leslie became angry when Eva suggested that it would only be a matter of time before the Richardsons started asking questions about her involvement in Laura's accident, as Eva had. Leslie left her daughter and grunted, “Happy birthday.”

Ted was relieved to see Andre, complaining that it had already been a day, and it wasn't even lunchtime. When Andre inquired into things, Ted described how Nicole was still giving him the silent treatment but also how the walls had come down a bit with Kat; he hoped that Kat would be able to convince Nicole to have a dialogue with him. Andre conveyed how much Nicole was struggling; Ted felt he was likely the only person who could help her. When Andre passed on that it was Eva's birthday, Ted became solemn. He felt like he owed Eva. Andre offered to help Ted find a gift for the daughter he had just met and barely knew.

Using the key card Ted had given her, Kat let herself into his room after her knock generated no answer. Not finding him, Kat began to text her dad when there was a different rap on the door, which Kat opened to Leslie. Kat sniped that she didn't know what to call her; Leslie decided that “my almost stepmother” was nice. As Leslie looked around, Kat hit “record” on her phone and accused Leslie of resenting her, since Ted had left Leslie once Nicole had become pregnant with Kat. Leslie scoffed, so Kat persisted and mentioned that many other people besides Ted had gotten hurt from Leslie carrying out her revenge on him.

After Leslie blew off Nicole as collateral damage, Kat coolly asked if Laura had been that as well. Kat knew that either Leslie or Eva had run Laura off the road, because otherwise Eva suddenly filling in for Laura was far too coincidental. Leslie didn't find the timing suspicious at all, prompting Kat to consider the statement an admission that Eva had done the deed – yet, when Leslie went heavy on details about how Eva could have committed the crime, Kat squared her eyes. Leslie smugly said that Kat had no proof about anything, and there was nothing that Kat could do. With that, Leslie stalked out, and Kat grabbed her phone. “Gotcha,” Kat said to herself, glaring in Leslie's direction.
