Jacob put his marriage at risk by apprehending mother-in-law Dani on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Jacob readied to take Dani into custody while Vernon reminded the detective that everyone at the country club who had witnessed Dani pulling a gun on Bill and Hayley had been interviewed, and that the ultimate judgement had been that any charges against Dani were unwarranted. Jacob revealed that Bill, as the victim, had introduced new charges and submitted Chelsea's video to the state attorney's office. When Anita berated Jacob for “Mirandizing your own mother-in-law,” Jacob uncomfortably said he was just doing his job. Naomi referenced her earlier phone call with Jacob, on which he had avowed he was her husband first; “if you meant that,” Naomi pleaded, “don't you dare put cuffs on my mother!”

Dani sassed that the last time she saw such restraints, she was role playing arresting officer with Bill. Dani accused Jacob of having his strings pulled by Bill, but Jacob insisted to Naomi that he was the only officer on the force who would care about the family. Jacob had instructed the patrol cars to ferry Dani to the station without lights or sirens, warning that things could get ugly if Dani didn't cooperate post-haste. Anita agreed, and Vernon reminded Dani of the times he'd been arrested; Dani lamented that Vernon had been taken in for fighting for the rights of their people, not because he had embarrassed his family. Vernon relayed how, back then, the cuffs had been used to make them feel powerless, but he and other advocates had used them to show how powerless their oppressors were.

Dani interrupted Jacob's reading of her rights by inserting that she knew them, daring Jacob to hold the truth against her when she said that the indictments were a load of crap. Attorney Naomi informed Jacob that she would be representing Dani, and she had Jacob reiterate the charges of attempted murder for the record. Unofficially, Naomi fumed that Jacob had become Bill's errand boy and told Jacob that she would never forgive him.

The Duprees followed Dani to the station and notified Jacob that they would watch while he processed Dani. As Jacob took Dani's mug shots, she defiantly posed like the model she used to be. The Duprees discussed whether or not Dani could be held overnight, with Vernon predicting anything could happen with Bill holding his thumb on the scale. Smitty observed that a tabloid reporter was waiting outside, making Martin seethe that the newshound had been tipped off. Vernon thought it strange that the police had said Dani had committed no crime but suddenly turned around and found her accountable; when Martin threatened to boil over, Anita reminded him that there were eyes watching, and that anything they did would reflect on Dani.

Bill strolled in and snarked that he missed the Dupree family meetings, complete with a speech by Queen Anita herself; he had come to see Dani in an orange jumpsuit. Naomi wanted to know how her father could do such a thing to her mother; Bill was sorry that Naomi and Chelsea had been hurt by Dani's criminality. After Bill added that congressman Martin would figure out a way to spin things positively, Martin rushed Bill, but Smitty stopped his husband. Bill invited Martin to continue, smirking that it would mean another Dupree up on charges. Bill stated that Martin being brought up on assault would be a long time coming.

When Vernon swore he would get Dani's charges dropped, Bill retorted that no matter how many people Vernon bribed, there were still a million “witnesses” who had seen Chelsea's video. Chelsea exclaimed that she'd have to live with her part in sending her own mother to jail; Bill hailed his daughter a hero for making it possible for justice to be served. As Vernon chided Bill for using his own child to get revenge on Dani, Hayley stormed in and demanded that the whole proceeding stop.

Hayley was furious that Bill had kept charging Dani from her, which Bill said he did to keep Hayley out of everything. Hayley was disappointed that, despite their agreeing to let the situation with Dani go, Bill had still reignited the theatrics. Hayley felt that Bill had played her like he had played Dani, and she wanted to know why Bill even cared what people thought about Dani getting off for threatening them with a gun. Hayley suspected that Bill was still holding on to Dani and spat that his need to win was more important to him than his new wife. Hayley dared Bill to prove her wrong and drop the charges against Dani...letting Dani go for real this time.

Vernon asked Martin what he was thinking, rushing Bill while surrounded by cops. Martin growled that Bill had gone too far and that someone needed to put him on notice, but Vernon had to concede that Bill was holding all the cards. Jacob soon returned Dani's belongings to her and announced that she was free to go. Dani told Bill he could find her thank-you in hell; Bill said Dani had his bride to thank, with Hayley reiterating that she had never meant to hurt Dani. When Dani commented that Anita had taught her that apologies were worthless without actions, Hayley owned her behavior and held that she didn't regret loving Bill, just the pain she had caused Dani. Before Dani could reply further, Anita ushered her out of the police station.

Jacob asked Naomi if he could come home. Naomi responded that Jacob could have at least given her a heads-up about Dani's arrest so she could prepare her. Jacob stated he had been worried Dani might be a flight risk; Naomi stood firm in saying Jacob hadn't trusted her to keep Dani in line, and now Naomi didn't trust Jacob, either.

Derek met Ashley at Uptown; she confused Derek by saying she was glad he fought fires and not crime. Ashley elaborated by sharing her worry that Jacob having to arrest Dani would put a strain on Jacob's marriage to Naomi, which the entering Hayley overheard. Derek noted that all couples fought – about money, family, and not seeing enough of each other, he added, putting his hand on Ashley's. Derek was sure the Hawthornes would work things about, to which Ashley reluctantly agreed.

At the Dupree mansion, Smitty wanted to talk to Martin about how he'd almost attacked Bill, but Martin didn't want his husband adding to the earful his grandfather had given him. Martin asserted that he couldn't just stand by while people he loved were getting hurt; Smitty termed that hella sexy but didn't want his Romeo punching his way out of things. Martin swore the moment with Bill was a one-off that wouldn't happen again, then cut Smitty off. Smitty then voiced his concerns to Vernon, sussing out that Vernon talking Martin down meant Vernon and Smitty were on the same page about Martin's temper. Vernon excused Martin's outburst as “healthy, momentary dissent” after Bill had egged Martin on and encouraged Smitty not to worry.

Dani fretted that her ordeal may have gotten between her daughter and her son-in-law. Naomi maintained that Jacob had chosen to insert himself all on his own by doing Bill's bidding. Anita reminded Naomi that she knew what she was getting into when she married Jacob and that Jacob was what a law enforcer should be; Anita stated that Jacob couldn't just make excuses when the law was inconvenient to the family. Naomi was angry that Bill had twisted that law out of revenge and didn't know how to reconcile Jacob choosing “the blue” over their wedding bands.

Once home, Naomi told Jacob that she didn't hate him, but she wouldn't let her husband embrace her. Though Jacob said that he hadn't sided with Bill over her, Naomi stated that's how Jacob arresting Dani on Bill's behalf had felt. Jacob recalled how he and Naomi never went to bed angry; Nicole announced that she was going to bed, but that Jacob would be sleeping on the couch.

Bill was upset that Hayley couldn't realize that he'd had Dani arrested to protect Hayley. The new Mrs. Hamilton knew that Bill didn't love Dani anymore, but he seemed to care what Dani thought. If they were going to make their marriage work, Hayley insisted, Bill would have to stop antagonizing Dani and the Duprees. Could Bill do that, or did Hayley need to begin packing for a honeymoon for one?

Chelsea didn't know how she'd be able to look at her father again after he had tried to jail his mother. Dani granted that Bill was an ass, but she wanted Chelsea to base her relationship with him on how Bill treated Chelsea, not how he treated Dani. After Chelsea left, Anita told Dani that she was proud of her. Dani thought Anita should defer her pride, because Dani couldn't help pondering why Bill had stirred things up with her again after the matter of her gunplay had been closed. Right after Dani had told Hayley that she was truly through with Bill, he had pulled Dani back in, then dropped the charges. Anita reminded Dani that it was Hayley who had convinced Bill to drop them; Dani knew it didn't make sense, but she felt Bill attempted to have her incarcerated was a kind of overture. To Anita's dismay, Dani said she still loved that “miserable, wicked man” and would take him back in a heartbeat if that's what Bill wanted.

Doug returned to the casino, happy his gambling privileges had been restored and that his account was in the black. Doug cast Randy responsible, but Randy said Joey was. Doug was surprised that Randy had made Joey out to be a thug when he seemed like just a regular guy, despite having some “scary moments.” Doug was ready to make back the money Joey had lent him, but Randy urged Doug to give up gambling for good.

Doug told Randy that he couldn't do that when he still owed money to Joey. Randy thought that Doug could earn the funds by taking on more patients, but Doug insisted that overworking himself would be too much of a risk to them. When Randy was concerned that being indebted to Joey posed an even greater risk, Doug confidently said that Joey's monetary assistance was a sign that his luck was changing and sat back down at the card table.

After Doug won enough to pay back a huge chunk of what he owed Joey, he stepped away instead of gambling further, which impressed Randy. Doug declared himself golden and crowed that he would easily be able to win enough to pay Joey off, after which Doug would get out of gambling before his lucky streak ended.

Eva recognized Andre at Uptown from his social media posts and introduced herself, adding that she was his aunt's assistant and that she wasn't flirting with him. Andre invited Eva to stay for a drink, also assuring that he had nothing romantic in mind. Eva admitted that she had seen the tribute video Andre had shot of Ted and Nicole for Nicole's award presentation and said that her favorite part was the photos Andre had included showing the Richardsons “behind the mask.” When Andre demurred, Eva declared she was being truthful. Andre intuited that Eva had a hard time showing her real self, but added that he saw Eva as curious, smart, and honest with those she trusted.

Eva was flattered, and when Andre asked if she had met his Uncle Ted, Eva confirmed, describing Ted as a good guy who had made her feel welcome. Eva knowingly remarked that it must be nice to be a part of the Richardson family. Later, Eva thanked Andre for having shared more about his aunt and uncle off-screen.

Andre visited Ashley and Derek at their table and asked if Ashley had delivered any more babies in elevators. Andre was glad that Ashley was able to balance a social life with her job after worrying that nursing would take up too much time. Ashley held Derek's hand and told Andre they were working things out, after which Andre excused himself, staring at the couple before he exited. Eva noticed.

Nicole implored the suicidal woman she had gone to see on the hospital roof, whom Nicole didn't know was Leslie, to step back from the ledge. Nicole offered to slow down when the woman cried that things were moving too fast, instead asking for her name. When she wouldn't give it, Nicole wondered if the woman was in trouble. Leslie introduced herself as “Sherry” and commented that Nicole's shoes cost more than “Sherry” made in a year. Nicole replied that she wouldn't charge “Sherry” and coaxed “Sherry” to divulge what had driven her to the rooftop.

Leslie told Nicole a story about losing her husband six months earlier and couldn't take the loneliness, again throwing her leg over the roof's railing. Nicole worried that “Sherry” would slip and reflected that “Sherry” didn't seem like she was ready to give up. Leslie challenged Nicole, asking if this was the part where Nicole mentioned what a long way down it was. Nicole recognized that heartbreak and disappointment had brought “Sherry” to this point and advised that the mere act of giving voice to those emotions could bring comfort. When Leslie seemed willing, Nicole suggested that they move their conversation to her office, and “Sherry” put her hand in Nicole's.

Ted worried that Nicole hadn't come back and jettisoned hospital protocol to race up to the roof himself, but he halted when he saw Nicole and “Sherry” coming off the elevator. Nicole had to convince the dubious “Sherry” to accompany her down the hall to her office, promising that “Sherry” could lean on her. As “Sherry” consented, she caught a glimpse of Ted and exchanged glances with him.

Once in Nicole's office, “Sherry” confessed that she was already regretting being on the roof and that she had been suffering from depression. Leslie said it had started when her husband had left her; Nicole had assumed from “Sherry's” words before that her spouse had died. Leslie recounted how her man had rejected her, and because he and his new wife looked through her like she was dead, she figured she might as well be a ghost. Nicole impressed upon “Sherry” that suicide was never the answer, prompting Leslie to say she had wanted her ex to see how much he had hurt her. She wanted revenge, and couldn't wait to see the look on “that man's” face when he realized she had won. Ted, who had trailed the women to Nicole's office, stood outside the door and heard everything.

Nicole saw that “Sherry” needed tools to deal with her trauma and offered to keep seeing “Sherry” gratis, but “Sherry” felt that Nicole would be a reminder of what had happened that night. Nicole handed “Sherry” a list of referrals before she left. As Leslie made her way through the nurses' station, Ted stopped her and demanded she tell him what the hell she was doing there. In another room, Ted warned Leslie not to mess with his wife, which Leslie casually said was enjoyable payback after Ted had left Leslie for Nicole. Ted admitted that he and Leslie had had an affair but reminded Leslie that she had agreed to disappear once Ted had paid her off. After Leslie proclaimed that she had rethought their arrangement, Ted wondered how much it would take to make Leslie go away; Leslie wanted respect, not more money, which Ted had never shown Leslie before. If Ted couldn't do that, Leslie sneered, then she'd have to book another appointment with Nicole. Would Nicole be allowed to confront Ted, owing to his “hypocrite oath”, if Leslie squealed about their affair, Leslie asked? Ted promised he would destroy Leslie if she came for his wife again. Leslie observed that she had never seen Ted so angry before and taunted him, saying he needed to see a good therapist.

Ted found Nicole in her office, relieved, and questioned his wife about what had happened with the suicidal woman on the roof. Nicole decreed that doctor-patient confidentiality even applied to spouses but did say that she wouldn't be counseling “Sherry” again – however, Nicole had left her door open for “Sherry” should the need arise.

Eva then took a call from Leslie, who told her daughter that she could be dead, but was very much alive. Eva wondered what that meant and reasserted that their plan was for Leslie to lay low while Eva got close to the Richardsons. Leslie purred that she had met both Nicole and Ted and toyed with them. Leslie smiled that she had needed to see Nicole for herself and had merely harkened back to her theatre days to play “Sherry Carter”, the character she had created for Nicole. Plus, Ted had been pissed, Leslie relayed, and he had seen her power. Eva was appalled and apprised Leslie that she was too close to achieving her vengeance to be taking unnecessary risks like confronting Ted and his wife. Leslie couldn't wait to have her revenge.

Beyond the Gates airs weekdays on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus.
