Here's what went down Tuesday, November 18, 2025 on Beyond the Gates when Jessica delivered Tyrell a four-letter word, Smitty did his giving of thanks a week early, and Vernon got snagged by the worst possible person.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Ted caught Shanice singing along to an Articulettes video at the nurses station. Shanice was still floored that Anita had “graced” her with her presence a few days earlier but regretted that she hadn't had her Articulettes program with her for the diva to sign. Ted said he would reach out to Anita were it not for the fact that she no longer returned his calls. Shanice wanted to know if Ted and Carlton were still headed for a beatdown; Ted said that Eva had arranged their schedules so they barely saw each other, and that he was trying to improve his behavior anyhow. As Shanice gently put a hand on Ted's shoulder, telling him he was making progress, Leslie came off the elevator and witnessed it.
Leslie beset Ted with her worries about Peaches, who had just been admitted. Though Leslie feared that Peaches' short breath and swollen legs were signs her heart was giving out, Ted encouraged Leslie to think positively and learned from Shanice that Peaches was being attended to by Dr. Wilkes. Leslie said that Doug had been the best surgeon in the DMV and was doubtful that Wilkes could measure up; once Ted left, Leslie immediately shut down all of Shanice's attempts to reassure her about Wilkes.
Once Leslie returned from having seen Peaches, she renewed her attack on Shanice, snarking that “maybe my words got drowned out by the fluttering of fake lashes before.” As a financial contributor to Garland, Leslie demanded the best care for Peaches; Shanice was just saying she couldn't be bought when Dr. Wilkes arrived to find himself ambushed by Leslie, who wanted precise details of Peaches' condition.
Leslie's emotions ran high as Wilkes explained that Peaches had experienced “acute exacerbation of congestive heart failure;” Peaches' daughter wasn't satisfied that Wilkes was content to “hang a bag of medicine and send [Peaches] home.” After Leslie insisted on a second opinion, Wilkes held firm that even a third doctor would arrive at his prognosis, though he cast a glance at Shanice, who rolled her eyes.
With Dr. Wilkes gone, Shanice calmly advised Leslie not to take her concern for Peaches out on her staff. However, Leslie kept ranting, so Shanice finally told the derisive woman that she wouldn't stand for her conduct. “Dr. Wilkes is more qualified than any of those wigs or personas you have,” Shanice fumed. Leslie implied that she would use her influence to get Shanice fired; Shanice retorted that, until such time she found herself unemployed, she was going to continue to give her patients 100%, “no matter who their play daughters are.”
Later, Ted saw how rattled Shanice was from her encounter with “Dana” and offered to talk Leslie down. Shanice was adamant that she didn't need a referee; Ted agreed that Shanice was a force. There was a charged moment between them, after which Shanice asked Ted what he had ever seen in Leslie.
Eva and Izaiah were in agreement that they both liked Orphey Gene's, but also that Uptown was a better place for them to get to know each other. Izaiah wanted to know who the new man was that Eva had mentioned had been taking her mind off Tomás; Eva flirtatiously said that she preferred to keep the guy a mystery, but Izaiah figured out that she was talking about him. He decided that Eva was “fine” and worth learning more about – their banter became so sultry that they ended up sharing their first kiss.
Izaiah determined that Eva didn't know her own power and that she must not have been given many compliments, since taking them seemed to be a foreign concept to her. As Eva and Izaiah were clearly heading toward a second kiss, Eva's phone lit up with a call from the persistent Leslie. Eva chose to ignore the call at first, but she finally took it and learned that Peaches had been hospitalized.
Eva met Leslie at her hotel room, since Peaches was resting and not allowed visitors. Mother and daughter discussed bringing in specialists for Peaches and even what it would take to get Peaches a real or artificial replacement heart. But when Leslie became certain that only Ted could help, Eva groaned and said that Leslie was asking too much.
Leslie suddenly inquired into how things were going between Eva and Izaiah. Eva described how hanging out with Izaiah had felt natural; Leslie wanted to know if Eva had at least gotten a proper smooch before her interruption. “Oh, we smooched,” Eva finally said coyly, “but it wasn't all that proper.” Leslie nearly clapped her hands with glee and wondered if it had been enough to make Eva forget about Tomás. “Tomás who?” Eva piped up.
At Orphey Gene's, Vernon witnessed a dissatisfied customer snatching their takeout order out of June's hands. June lamented that she had given out a “plate of death” to someone with heart issues and diabetes. Vernon was sympathetic and assured June that her “megawatt” spirit would be enough to help her overcome her errors – he then ordered two pieces of peach cobbler, and June noticed that it wasn't the first time the senator had picked up the dessert that week.
Vernon admitted that both pieces were for him. June offered Vernon her “big mama's” recipe – but Vernon jovially said that there would be hell to pay if Anita or cook Rowena caught him with someone else's cobbler in the oven. It would be “tantamount to adultery,” he remarked as he left with the pastry.
The still-grounded Samantha was grumpy that Smitty and Tyrell could be on their devices while she was still banned from using any. Martin came home, having been able to hear the teens' squabbling from the hall. Smitty suggested that they all go out for milkshakes at Orphey Gene's; Tyrell resisted, so Samantha squealed that Jessica was on her way over for a study date. The Richardson-Smiths ordained that their son was not to be left alone with Jessica but told Tyrell that Jessica could join them at the diner.
June saw the sullen Jessica entering the establishment, but before Jessica could say what was wrong, Tyrell and his family arrived. Jessica and Tyrell took a separate table; Smitty and Martin observed that the high school seniors seemed to be in love. Meanwhile, Samantha pouted to June about serving out the sentence doled out by her “drone dads”; June felt there were worse things than having two fathers who loved her.
Smitty saw June privately to put in the milkshake orders, but also to thank her for saving his family. The reporter pronounced June “the Samantha whisperer” and admitted he had been hard on June before because he had been afraid Samantha and Tyrell would end up loving June more than him and Martin. “Blood doesn't make a parent,” June offered wisely. “Love does.” Smitty told June that it had taken a lot of courage for her to give up her kids and that he was grateful for what June had added to all their lives. June nearly cried into the milkshakes.
Jessica, preoccupied, was about to tell Tyrell what was on her mind when Samantha interrupted them. She became upset to learn that Tyrell had confided to Jessica about what had happened between her and Nathan; Jessica reckoned she would have found out anyway, since, had Samantha given her virginity to Nathan, the boy would have posted about it on his socials. Samantha sat silent as Tyrell and Jessica explained how Nathan had been bragging about being so close to scoring with her, and Jessica added that Tyrell had stood up to Nathan and defended her honor. “No one gets to insult my sister except me,” Tyrell smiled.
June happened to overhear as Jessica finally revealed to Tyrell that she had applied to the University of California, Los Angeles – because attending that college was a tradition in her family. Tyrell explained how he had been expected to apply to get into the local Banneker University, but he was willing to put in for UCLA if it meant he and Jessica could remain close. Jessica worried about whether or not there would be an “us” if they ended up attending college on opposite coasts and later spoke to June about whether it would be better to break up with Tyrell now before they got too involved...and separated.
Once back at the brownstone, Martin and Smitty introduced Tyrell to Izaiah, who had come to help with Tyrell's application to Banneker. With his parents in the other room, Tyrell asked Izaiah what he was supposed to do if he and his girlfriend ended up studying in different states. Izaiah shared how he and his girlfriend had just broken up and opined that, while endings could be hard, they could also lead to better beginnings.
Martin called Vernon, who was quick to get off the phone because he had a sponsorship meeting concerning WinterFest. Mr. Dupree was really in the hallway of Sharon's hotel; he looked around cautiously before entering her room. Some time later, Eva left Leslie's room but accidentally left her wallet behind – Leslie followed after Eva only to see Vernon coming out of Sharon's suite and hear them saying that they couldn't get caught, especially by Anita. Closing her door, Leslie sniggered that Vernon was “sneaking around with the wrong Articulette.” Ms. Thomas deemed the sight “delicious!”
