On Beyond the Gates, Kat and Chelsea had needed to stay behind and skip Doug's memorial to take care of a ChelseaKat production mishap. Chelsea lamented that Donnell and Deanna, Doug's children, were younger than she and Kat were. Talk turned to Chelsea having slipped to Tomás that Kat loved him; Kat exclaimed that Chelsea hadn't even apologized for the betrayed confidence. Chelsea said she didn't want Tomás dismissing Kat's feelings and using as that as an excuse to sleep with Eva. Kat relented, admitting that she was mad at herself, not Chelsea; she wished she didn't love Tomás, but she did.

In the country club lobby, Dani and Nicole consoled Vanessa following Doug's memorial as Carlton stood in the periphery. Vanessa smiled that Doug would have wanted the commemoration to be an actual party; Dani quipped that Doug would have been its deejay. When Vanessa struggled to verbalize her feelings, Dani understood that Vanessa and Doug had had a complicated relationship, and Dani presumed that the way things had ended had been even more devastating for her friend. Vanessa flashed back to her final conversation with Doug, during which he had berated himself for calling the one person sure to make him feel worse; after the recollection, Vanessa told the Dupree sisters that she would never forgive herself.

Joey found Vanessa alone later and remarked that it wouldn't have been appropriate for him to attend the memorial. Vanessa didn't make eye contact with her lover at first and had to tell him that she couldn't lean on him then and there, since they were in public.

Leslie accompanied Eva into the banquet room, where Tomás was waiting at a table. Eva was instructed by her mother to make sure Tomás recognized that Eva wasn't mad at him for choosing Kat; Leslie snarked that Tomás had only picked Kat because he couldn't have her. While Eva didn't like being cast as a Leslie, the original stated, “Playing dirty is the price of admission.” Leslie decided to pay her respects to “Glinda, the Good Real Estate Agent,” adding that “Real Estate Barbie” had handed her and Eva the keys to their “queendom.”

Spying Joey with Vanessa, Leslie was introduced to the casino owner and was not secretive in her flirtation with him. After Leslie learned that Vanessa and Joey were business partners, and offered the widow some insincere platitudes, Joey labeled Leslie “a live one.”

Dani, Nicole, and Carlton converged with Chelsea and Kat at Nicole's house. Kat was saddened that Doug had been so far gone that he had chosen to drink and drive. After Nicole mentioned that the cousins would be able to watch the remembrance they'd missed online, the psychiatrist opined that one choice could change everything. Kat stared away blankly and then excused herself hastily.

Eva met Tomás at his table, telling the junior lawyer that they needed to finish what they'd started. Tomás had been sure that Eva would never speak to him again; she replied that his playing both sides with her and Kat had “hella hurt.” Eva felt that Tomás had gone for something polished over something real, and she was glad that Tomás had been stung by her saying he had used her as a “sexual experiment” to make himself feel better after Kat had emasculated him. Tomás copped to his ego having been bruised and felt bad for taking advantage of Eva's friendship.

When Tomás said his feelings for Kat were different than his feelings for her, Eva took that to mean he felt less for her. Still, Eva couldn't deny that she felt no regret over their encounter – it had been “top-shelf amazing.” Tomás continued to insist that his heart lie with Kat, prompting Eva to respond that she and Tomás knew each other, unlike their experiences with other lovers, and they had taken that knowledge to bed. As Eva became adamant that the reason Kat couldn't connect to Tomás sexually was because Kat was only interested in him as a means of keeping him away from Eva, Kat walked in and overheard.

Eva went off, telling Kat that her lovemaking with Tomás had only made them closer and reiterating her comments about Kat's inability to enjoy sex. As Kat stood silent, Tomás took the full responsibility of the situation onto himself and made it clear he knew that he and Kat loved each other – because of Chelsea popping off about it. Eva was revolted that Tomás had had to hear the profession from Kat's cousin, but when Kat's eyes lit up at Tomás' admission, Eva stormed off, snapping that she felt cold standing next to her half-sister...in fact, frigid.

Kat was ecstatic that Tomás had finally said he loved her – he held to it, but said the scenario wasn't how he'd envisioned confessing his heart. They both decided to say “I love you” to each other directly, as opposed to hearing it from other people, and Kat decided she wasn't mad at Tomás anymore, since he had stood up for her with Eva. Their kiss became heated, and Kat didn't want to wait until they got to Tomás' place to act further on it. Kat led Tomás into a country club storage room, where a passerby walked by and heard them making love.

Afterwards, Tomás felt that he might have gotten Kat into trouble. Kat didn't care and indicated that she'd finally had an orgasm. The woman who happened upon them asked a staffer if she and her partner could have the meal that the young lovers had ordered.

A fuming Eva descended upon Leslie in her hotel room, disgusted that she had botched what had seemed like a promising talk with Tomás by imitating Leslie. “Why the hell am I trying to be a mini-you?” she huffed. Leslie resented that Eva had been judgmental of her ever since they'd come to D.C. and didn't think there was anything wrong with her daughter following her example. Eva scoffed that she was not going to “co-sign attempted murder” and sighed that she was just going to wait for Tomás to realize that it was the two of them who were meant to be. Leslie forcefully maintained that Eva needed to fight for Tomás, whether her fstyle was clean or dirty.

Chelsea regretted having given Tomás an “unintentional assist” with her loose lips; Dani didn't like Dupree women being cheated on becoming a theme. After Nicole ducked out to handle something in her office, Dani could tell that Carlton liked Nicole and was sure it hadn't been easy for him at the memorial with Ted's eyes burning a hole through the back of his head. Carlton laughed it off, and after Dani wanted to know how things were going between him and Nicole, he told a story about how he had met Nicole in kindergarten and had been the victim of unrequited love for decades as he waited for Nicole to become available.

Dani was amused by what she deduced was a tall tale, and Chelsea accepted that Carlton didn't want to have to explain himself. Carlton concurred, politely refusing to speak for Nicole and adding that Nicole should be the first to hear about whatever feelings he had for her. Nicole returned as Carlton hoped he'd passed inspection; Nicole said that her approval was all Carlton needed, and they shared a quick kiss. After Carlton went back to the hospital, Dani crowed that she liked Carlton better than “cowardly lion” Ted.

Nicole saw irony in Dani vetting her relationships after drunkenly entering into a marriage with Andre, whom Nicole felt Dani was using. Dani became defensive and railed at Nicole for appointing herself the “arbiter of right and wrong” – besides, Andre had chosen her. Nicole and Dani put Chelsea on the spot, wondering what Dani's daughters were thinking about the union; Chelsea had been cool with Andre and Dani as a couple, but she hadn't foreseen them getting into something long-term.

Chelsea loved that chaos was Dani's brand, but she worried that her mom was play acting in her new role as a wife. The designer was uncertain that Dani could keep a marriage going when things were casual and reminded Dani that, all things considered, she had still made a promise to Andre. Dani let down her guard and told Nicole and Chelsea that she needed companionship. She felt safe with Andre, and she trusted him – though Dani allowed that she should have been more discreet.

While Dani took a call from her hubby, Chelsea conceded to Nicole that Dani was happy. Nicole could see that Dani was. As for Kat, Chelsea wished that her cousin would find someone better, but she had said her piece about Tomás – and now all she could do was wish them well.

Vanessa noticed that Donnell was missing from the post-memorial gathering, and Joey barely hid his worry as the realtor spoke of how her son had come to the country club wearing dirty shoes. For his part, Donnell had gone to see Jacob at the police station after combing over the scene of Doug's accident. Jacob expressed his condolences, but after Donnell mentioned that his twin sister, Deanna, hadn't been present at the memorial because she had stayed behind at Banneker University nursing the flu, the college student told Jacob that he still had a lot of questions about what had happened to Doug.

Donnell was in disbelief that the site of his father's death had been one they'd driven by a million times. Jacob was asked if he knew whether or not Doug had suffered – but Marcel, who had been watching, interrupted under the guise of reaching for a file. Marcel expressed his own “condolences” to Donnell and remarked that only Jacob was handling the case.

After Marcel went back to his desk, Jacob gently told Donnell that it had been likely that Doug had died on impact, given the damage to the tree he had hit. Donnell hauntedly relayed that he had seen the burn marks on the tree and wondered if Doug could have been saved had someone driven by the crash site. Jacob empathized, observing that Donnell's survivor guilt was very real.

Joey listened as Vanessa described how Donnell was upset with her for hiding things from him about his father. She hoped that once all the information was out, her son didn't blame her for Doug's death. Donnell called Vanessa from the precinct and she rushed out to meet him – meanwhile, having learned of Donnell's whereabouts, Joey returned to the Lakeview and had an employee run him through security footage of Doug and Marcel. Joey mused that it was time to make Detective Malone disappear.

Vanessa met with Donnell and Jacob, surprised that her son had gone to the station. Donnell explained that he needed to know whether or not Doug had hurt. Jacob cautiously offered for the widow and her son to examine photos from the scene; Vanessa was hesitant, but Donnell was determined to see the images. Afterwards, Jacob suggested that they seek out a crisis counselor; Vanessa answered that they'd talk to Nicole and gave Jacob formal permission to close the case. However, Jacob was waiting on more forensic information before taking that step and stated his intention to obtain security footage from the casino.

Just then, Joey entered – while he told everyone that he hadn't been at the casino the night of Doug's death, he'd anticipated that the police would want his help and handed Jacob a flash drive with the video the officer had wanted. Donnell and Vanessa braced themselves as Jacob booted up the clip – with Donnell distraught that it had captured the last time anyone had seen Doug alive – but Marcel peeked over everyone's shoulders and gave Joey a look when he realized that he had been successfully removed from the footage.
