On Beyond the Gates, Shanice ran Derek through a post-physical therapy check, reminding him not to downplay his condition as he had previously. Emotionally, Derek was charged up – physically, there was still no feeling in his legs. Ashley was sure that his tenacity would yield results, but the departing Shanice wanted to reassess the next day and urged Derek to actually rest instead of continuing to push himself. Ashley decided that Derek had a hero complex, which he couldn't refute; he confessed that being a firefighter made him feel needed. He also revealed that he wanted to impress Ashley, particularly in his current situation.

Ashley joked that Derek was trying to seduce her with his resoluteness, but intention behind actions held more meaning for her than the actions themselves. Derek was of a different mindset: he wanted to smoke the competition, feeling that it demonstrated who put in the work when one came up from behind and won. Ashley countered that showing up, even when one didn't feel like it, was more important.

Trying to straighten Derek's blanket, Ashley fell on Derek's lap, but he couldn't feel it. Things got awkward and Ashley left to tend to other patients. As she walked out, Derek tentatively massaged his leg and wore a slight smile. Insisting to himself that he'd felt something, he tried to will his limbs to move. When they didn't, he got frustrated and banged on his legs with his fists – his eyes widening in reaction.

At the nurses' station, Shanice made it clear to Ashley that, despite having once thought of pursing a relationship with Derek, she had ultimately decided to just be his friend, noting, “Girl, that is your man, point blank, period.” Shanice observed that Derek's heart was in Ashley's lap, and that the two of them needed figure out “that seesaw thing” they had going on. Ashley and Shanice mended their fences, with Shanice affirming that she didn't want to share when it came to “good lovin'.”

Smitty got off a call as Martin entered the brownstone after a long session in Congress. The subject turned to Chelsea, and the Richardson-Smiths regretted that they were now beholden to Joey because of the information the casino owner had passed on about Allison. Smitty was certain that Joey would call in his marker, but Martin was more concerned about his parents' divorce. He remarked that his mom had been firm in her decision, but he couldn't be sure it was the right one. Smitty found this to be in opposition to Martin's rage when he found out that Ted had cheated with Leslie and impregnated her.

Martin admitted that part of his fury over Ted's betrayal had come from the spotlight it had shone on his own in keeping secrets about “Kenneth.” Smitty was glad that therapy was giving Martin a better handle on his emotions but wondered if he was now judging his anger as misguided. Martin said he understood why his parents had split, but he didn't want them to divorce...especially now that he was in the same boat. The politician noted the parallels between the reactions to Ted's deception and his own and told Smitty he didn't want to lose him. The estranged marrieds kissed...until Smitty pushed him away.

Though Martin wanted to make love, Smitty had had second thoughts about the kiss. Yet, after Martin declared that he wanted their life back, and asked if Smitty did, too, Smitty took Martin's hand and led him up to their bedroom. Clothes came off and the husbands settled onto the bed.

Afterward, Martin proclaimed that they still had another hour before the kids came home, but Smitty froze up. As Martin assumed that their lovemaking was a signal he could move back into the bedroom, Smitty informed him, “Like hell you are.” Martin thought they'd been finding their way back to each other, but Smitty said their having had sex had been no reset button. Though Smitty loved Martin, he still didn't feel like he could trust him. Martin was confused as to why Smitty had slept with him; “needing you and trusting you are two different things,” Smitty clarified.

Martin said he had kept his marriage vows, but Smitty was dubious, remembering how Martin had excluded him, pushed him away, and continued lying even when the kids were in danger. “The next time I accidentally kill someone on the side of the road, I'll call you first,” Martin snapped, not knowing what Smitty wanted; he couldn't take back anything he had done. He exhorted Smitty to tell him what he could do to regain Smitty's trust.

Smitty listened as Martin divulged that he had felt ashamed over losing control during the hate crime. Martin went on that he'd been afraid Smitty would see him differently after learning he'd committed a violent act. Smitty remarked that Martin hadn't trusted him to love all of him, putting a stop to their conversation and saying that, until Smitty could find a way to trust Martin again, Martin was sleeping on the couch. The reporter advised being careful as to not get the teens' hopes up as he had obviously done Martin's.

At the Dupree mansion, Ted angered Nicole by insinuating that she was using Chelsea's ordeal to distance herself from him. Ted didn't appreciate his soon-to-be-ex burying his attempt to help the family by preventing Leslie from moving in across the street, which just incensed Nicole even more; she berated him for bringing Leslie into their lives in the first place and mock applauded him for finally using his powers for good. When Nicole snapped that they could name a street after him for his efforts, she suggested Bare Minimum Boulevard, prompting Dani to prefer Too Little Too Late Lane.

Nicole acknowledged that Ted had indeed helped her parents, but she maintained that she didn't owe him anything in return because of it. Ted felt he and Nicole owed it to each other to start over after their decades of marriage; Nicole invalidated his claim by asserting he had violated her trust. As Ted pled for one chance to make things right, Bill entered and implored his friend to recognize he was fighting a losing battle, even placing a $10 bet on Nicole. Anita shocked herself by agreeing with Bill and added $20 to the pot; Ted balked as Dani plunked down her own bet on her sister.

Naomi entered, having heard everything from the foyer, and put down her own cash. The lawyer wanted to look into the case against Allison, while Dani felt the need to visit Chelsea. Bill offered to join her, though Dani recommended that they not crowd their daughter. After Naomi and Dani left, Vernon cracked that there had been no opposition in the wager against Ted; Nicole called it a vote of no confidence. Ted, staring down at what Bill called “dead money,” finally spoke up and rebuked the Duprees for sticking together, “even when it [made] no damn sense.” He resented his treatment as an outsider and bet $100 on himself.

Bill defined the wagers as family fun, but Ted told him and the rest of the Duprees to go to hell. Ted didn't want to continue being punished for making one mistake during a trying time in his marriage and affirmed that he had spent the rest of his time with Nicole dedicated to her. The plastic surgeon scoffed at the idea of everyone painting him with the same brush with which they painted Bill, who had dumped one of their own for a trophy wife and flaunted her in their faces. Vernon prevented Bill from advancing on Ted, who wanted the others to pass along to Chelsea that he would be her uncle forever, no matter what any court ruled.

Once Ted stormed out, Nicole wondered if they had been too hard on him, noting that Mr. Richardson had made some good points. “If the Ferragamo fits,” Anita snarked when Bill realized the family still viewed him as a villain. He chuckled and appointed himself the safekeeper of the pot.

With Allison handcuffed at the station, Chelsea was adamant about not leaving until she said her piece. Jacob warned Chelsea not to throw hands, then Chelsea declared that Allison hadn't broken her. She would move on and thrive while Allison rotted in jail. Allison smiled that she had given social media queen Chelsea viral content; she accused Chelsea of making disingenuous posts to ensure her followers came back for more. Chelsea boiled as Allison stated she had taken the devotion Chelsea wanted and brought it to its logical conclusion: obsession. Madison and Jacob had to hold Chelsea back as Allison grinned that Chelsea had made her the perfect follower and taunted that Chelsea should post about their meeting.

When Chelsea returned home, she found Dani there and threw her phone down when it got a notification. “What is wrong with us?” Chelsea wanted to know. The designer couldn't fathom why people, including herself, desired likes and followers so badly, only to be shocked when those followers believed they were a part of their lives. When Chelsea recalled that Dani had sold her own fantasy during her time as a model, Dani corrected that she hadn't had social media in her heyday, but Chelsea denounced people thinking they had a right to her time and her body by virtue of it.

Dani conceded that she'd projected an image, but, off the runway, no one had had access to her unless she had granted it. “It's not like that anymore, Mom,” Chelsea protested sadly, feeling that her door was always open. Looking over her online behavior, she wondered if she had led Allison on by always trying to strike a balance between vulnerability and perfection. “I could have died because I needed the engagement!” Chelsea wailed.

Madison and Dani implored Chelsea not to make herself responsible for Allison's delusions, but Chelsea didn't think it spoke well of a society when trauma could be turned into content. After Dani got assurance that Madison would continue to hold Chelsea's hand as she recovered, Chelsea allowed herself to be held by Madison.

When Madison fretted over whether Chelsea had eaten, Chelsea found irony in Allison being a good host and went over the dinner and wedding cake Allison had tried to serve her – before attempting to consummate their “marriage.” Madison assured Chelsea that she could share as much or as little about the “ceremony” as she wanted to. Chelsea was bothered more about what Allison had tried to do to them than she was to what she had endured personally and avowed that she hadn't slept with her kidnapper. Madison cried as Chelsea said she had rescued herself...for Madison.

Dani returned to the main house, telling her sister, parents, and ex-husband how Chelsea had seen Allison at the station and had started to fault herself for putting ideas in Allison's head with her content. She hoped Madison could soothe her and put her hand on Bill's leg as she seated herself; once alone, Nicole later commented to Vernon and Anita that Dani and Bill seemed “awfully chummy.” Anita was disturbed by the idea of Dani getting hung up on Bill again. Meanwhile, Bill explained to Dani how Naomi had warned him not to take advantage of her mother. “I'll never let that happen again,” Dani promised.

Jacob became annoyed when Allison started humming “Here Comes the Bride.” Allison decried being separated from her wife, and Jacob was stunned when Allison announced that the entering Naomi was her lawyer. Naomi fumed that, instead, she was there to make sure the book was thrown at her sister's tormentor; Allison named Naomi her sister-in-law and included herself among the Duprees, knowing how that family stuck together. Naomi yelled that no wedding ceremony was legal when once participant was chained to a bed. When Allison smirked that Chelsea looked pretty all tied up, Naomi was ready to “whip [Allison's] delusional behind so hard [her] ancestors feel it!” Naomi had to be restrained by Jacob, who reminded his wife that Allison was just trying to get to her.
