Here's what went down Wednesday, May 14, 2025, on Beyond the Gates when Anita agreed to articulate with The Articulettes, Hayley might have spied Bill's shaking hand, and Martin embraced Eva.
What happened on Beyond the Gates

On Beyond the Gates, Vernon interrupted Anita with kisses as she sat at the piano, vocalizing. Anita admitted she had been doing a lot of thinking about how special a reunion concert with The Articulettes would be, but she didn't consider it actually possible based on how she had treated the other members of the group when she went solo. Vernon stated that Anita was merely assuming how her fellow performers would react if she reached out to them and encouraged her to make a call that moment. Anita gently refused and went back to her piano playing.
Pulling out an Articulettes record, Vernon wanted to play it, but Anita said it had as many pops and scratches as her voice. The former senator wouldn't let his wife lean on that excuse again and reinforced his recommendation that Anita call the other band members. Anita proposed that Vernon have “a sing” with her instead, hoping it would defuse his “wanting to be the next Dante Green.” Vernon sighed that he couldn't carry a tune, but willingly gave it a shot for Anita's sake, hitting sour notes like crazy. The Duprees had a good laugh over it.
Afterwards, Vernon spied Anita studying her former group's album jacket and posited that a comeback show could help the trio mend fences. Anita was tempted by the idea of releasing the burden she'd been carrying over how The Articulettes broke up and praised Vernon for always letting her shine. The matriarch confessed that all the reunion talk had terrified her, but she also realized that Vernon would, as he had been for decades, be there to hold her hand through it. “Damn straight,” came Vernon's response. He was thrilled when Anita finally consented to the revival, but she cautiously apprised him that either it could be wonderful...or a disaster.
In a quiet spot, Anita called Sharon, one of her Articulettes counterparts...but it appeared that Sharon hung up on her.
At his office, Bill dropped a pen from his hand, shaking, but covered when an amorous Hayley entered the room. Bill joked that he would report her to the firm's new HR board, which made Hayley laugh. She closed the blinds on Bill's office door and sultrily reminded her husband that he still owed her two-thirds of a honeymoon, since they'd had to cut their original trip short. When Bill said he was piled up with work, having to cover for the fired Mike, a response Hayley had predicted, she determined to resume the honeymoon right then and there, passionately shoving Bill's papers off his desk – and, accidentally, his phone.
The Hamiltons chuckled over Hayley's “sexy” move, which had cracked Bill's phone screen. Seeing all the varying documents mixed up, busted them up even further, and Bill deeply kissed Hayley, laying her on the cleared desk. They redressed after making love, with Bill proclaiming that what he had with Hayley was better than anything he'd ever had with Dani. Bill nursed his shaking hand while Hayley had her back turned, freshening her make-up with her compact.
Andre went to check on Nicole, but when he remarked how well she seemed to be doing, she scoffed that perhaps he had expected to find her in a fetal position on the couch; obviously,y he'd kept Ted's affair a secret because he thought she was weak. Dani came in and asked Nicole to back off of Andre, wondering why Nicole had been able to accept Andre being in the loop before, but not now. Nicole could only say it was complicated. When Dani got Nicole to see that Andre had been a victim as well, Nicole said, “Damn you for making me my own therapist.”
After Andre felt bad for stirring things up and began to leave, Dani insisted that the rift be healed. Nicole cried that she felt raw and mistrustful — but she understood why Andre had remained silent. Andre was buoyed when Nicole maintained that they were family and conveyed how much he meant to her. Once they hugged it out, and Andre excused himself, Nicole asked Dani what was going on between them. Dani played dumb, but Nicole had picked up on signals; Dani successfully threw her sister off the scent by bringing up how Andre had helped then-model Chelsea during her Ebony fashion shoot. Nicole understood Dani's contention that she wasn't in the market for a relationship.
Dani acknowledged that she had gone nuts for a while, but she had come to see Bill leaving her as a blessing. She could now do what she wanted without having to consider the needs and wants of a partner, and she found it freeing. Nicole hadn't even begun to reach that place; while she was grateful for Dani's constant attention that day, she now needed to spend some time alone, so Dani left her to it.
At Dani's house, clothes came off, and she and Andre hit the sheets. Once they were through getting busy, Dani was glad that Andre had been able to read her body language while they had been at Nicole's. Andre leered that he had gotten Dani's message loud and clear...but was surprised when Dani reported that Nicole had, too. Dani explained how Nicole had inquired into whether or not Dani and Andre were together in any way, though she didn't give Andre a direct answer as to what her reply was, instead expressing regret that Nicole had taken her anger at Ted out on Andre.
Andre relayed how guilty Ted had felt over cheating on Nicole with Leslie – he allowed that Dani didn't want to hear that, but also recognized that he couldn't help loving both Ted and Nicole. It registered with Dani that she should probably be an adult about the situation. Dani then asked Andre how it had taken him so long to end up in her bed.
Smitty and Tyrell came in with groceries, following Samantha, who led carrying a bottle of Tide. Martin was on his way out; Smitty hoped he would be back in time for dinner with him and the kids. Martin told the doubtful Smitty that everything was fine and departed. Later, Tyrell overheard Samantha sneaking a phone call and deemed it “sus”; Smitty wasn't in the mood to referee his kids, and Samantha privately told herself that Tyrell would be thanking her soon.
Eva approached Kat at Orphey Gene's; Kat made the topic of being friends off-limits. Eva asserted that she and Kat had to work things out, as they were stuck with each other. Kat relayed Martin's contention that they might have a twin-like connection because of being born within two weeks of each other, but she added, “That will never be us.” Eva went to another table after she said no one could accuse her of not trying — besides, being half-sisters was forever.
Martin joined the grumpy Kat; she brightened after Martin invited her to dinner with Smitty and the kids, but balked when Martin additionally suggested that Eva come, as part of figuring out a path forward with their new sibling. Kat sassed, “Maybe you like to kumbaya with the other side of Congress, but this ain't that.” After Martin was open about wanting his kids to know their new aunt, an exasperated Kat got up and left. Eva saw the display and apologized for causing trouble between the Richardson sibs, but Martin offered for Eva to meet his family, and she beamed.
Samantha made Tyrell get the door; he was shocked to find Jessica standing there. Jessica thought it was cute that Samantha was trying to play matchmaker for her and Tyrell, introducing herself to Smitty and assuring him that the other kids were finally leaving Tyrell alone about his viral underwear picture. Martin brought Eva in, prompting Samantha to utter, “You mean that Eva?” Martin urged his daughter to be polite to his half-sister, while Jessica was floored to meet the congressman she had heard so much about. Samantha side-eyed Eva when Jessica marveled at how Eva and Martin had only recently discovered they were related.
Smitty and Tyrell took Jessica and Eva on a tour of their condo, giving Martin a chance to apologize to Samantha for bringing Eva over without warning. Samantha took umbrage at the fact that Eva had hurt her grandmother, Nicole; Martin declared Eva a family member who had gotten caught in Leslie's fallout as much as everyone else had. Eva returned and offered to leave – Martin invited her to stay, and Samantha sulked.
Once everyone was assembled, Martin took in his family and included Eva in it. Then, he told the group that he had been considering running for president but had shelved the aspiration because the smaller moments with loved ones were more important. Smitty smiled, though Samantha piped up that the pizza they'd ordered was getting cold.
Kat visited Nicole, who noticed that her daughter seemed off. Kat sniffed that she was fine except for running into “that trifling trash Eva Thomas.” Meanwhile, at the Richardson-Smiths, Samantha disinterestedly asked if what she'd heard about Eva being a hairdresser was true; Sam perked up upon learning that Eva was going to be working at the swanky Serenity Beauty salon. Smitty, knowing that Samantha had been thinking of changing her look, proposed that Eva assist; Samantha was unsure until Martin requested that Eva give her the makeover right that moment. Even Tyrell was impressed as Eva ran Samantha through several different styles.
Jacob and Naomi brought June to the diner; June felt her spot at the underpass was safer than the hotel the Hawthornes had offered because at least she knew the people. Naomi moved on to the topic of June's arraignment, but June couldn't quit coughing. June even refused the lemon and honey tea Naomi ordered for her, saying that catching colds was par for the course when living on the streets. Irritated, Naomi said she could have June put in jail until her trial, which would at least give her a roof; Jacob felt June's forehead and became concerned over how warm she was. When June became unresponsive, the Hawthornes sprang into action to take June to the hospital. On the way out, Naomi read a piece of paper that June had left behind in the booth.
