On Beyond the Gates, Detective Malone and Chief of Police Elon Hawthorne are now worrying just how deep Smitty will dig into Marcel’s history on the force. Smitty should be worried, too.
Smitty follows his nose on Beyond the Gates

Smitty’s (Mike Manning) piece on soon-to-be-retired detective Marcel Malone (Darryl W. Handy) is turning up all sorts of questionable activity and a life well outside the means of a detective's salary. Marcel appears to be receiving payoffs, small amounts of cash, five thousand dollars, just below the amount that the bank would need to report. Add to that a very nice boat, a property in the Caribbean, and becoming a millionaire in under 2 years on a detective's salary. The jackpot was hit two years ago when Malone deposited a payment of five hundred thousand dollars into his checking account, also in cash. Now, none of that seems legit at all, and the question Smitty should be asking is if this isn't legal, then not only what has the detective gotten himself into, but who else is involved and what they might do to protect that kind of income and lifestyle.

Two people who are connected and highly motivated to keep this quiet are the aforementioned detective, Malone, and his chief of Police, Elon Hawthorne (Malachi Malik). Elon just so happens to be besties with ex-Senator, Vernon Dupree (Clifton Davis), and his the father of Detective Jacob Hawthorne (Jibre Hordges). There is a lot at stake here: careers, reputations, and all the proceeds of their crooked past that are there to see them through retirement in luxury. Malone and Elon are seen discussing what will happen if Smitty keeps chasing these leads of his, and that is, it will point him straight home and to his congressman husband, Martin (Brandon Claybon). Martin's career in Congress, his reputation, the Dupree family name, and Martin and Smitty's two children are also at risk here should Smitty keep probing. Elon and Marcel have said that Smitty needs to be reminded that the dam needs to stay strong and not burst, as they so eloquently put it, but will deliver this message to Smitty? Wherever crime is, Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom) isn't too far away, and he has access to all sorts of heavies and also a triggerman when the need arises.

Smitty needs to tread carefully before the law of unintended consequences wraps his whole world up and crushes it. But can Smitty just turn a blind eye to all this corruption at the highest levels? What will this make him think of Martin? Can their marriage survive this? Hold on, soap fans, as we get closer and closer to the pulled thread unravelling all.
