On Beyond the Gates, Andre took a candid shot of Ashley at the hospital and presented her with a collage of other snaps he'd gotten of her. Ashley was flattered when Andre proclaimed that she didn't have a bad side. Ashley called his work stunning and happily accepted the gift. As Andre described seeing Ashley at the beginning of a wonderful journey – one he wanted to watch progress – Derek was brought in on a stretcher; the ceiling of a building aflame had fallen in on him as he worked to extinguish the blaze.

Once Derek was examined, Andre noticed that Ashley seemed shaken and asked what the prognosis was. Ashley couldn't break patient confidentiality; Andre's deduction was that Derek had a concussion and would be fine in a few days. Ashley reminded Andre that he wasn't a doctor, but Andre said he did know what it was like when the worst happened – as in when his parents were killed. Andre advised Ashley to remember that Derek was there and conscious and to not torture herself with worst-case scenarios. Ashley thanked Andre for talking her down, which she observed was starting to become their thing.

Derek struggled to remember that he was in the hospital and why, so Ashley gently filled him in on the details. A moment later, Derek once again couldn't think of the reason he was there, shocking Ashley, who informed Derek that he had indeed sustained a concussion. Derek grappled with his memory and thought he recalled rescuing a cat. Ashley wrote his condition down so Derek could remind himself when she wasn't there. Derek made some jokes about what he could and couldn't recall, but ashamedly admitted he couldn't remember Ashley's name. Ashley tried to set Derek's mind at ease by noting that memory loss was common with concussions and that it would be temporary. After she kissed him, Derek remembered that her name was Ashley.

Nicole was stressed because she was behind on prep for her awards gala and her laptop had died. Eva delivered her a spare and impressed Nicole by thinking ahead and bringing her the draft of her speech to work on. When Nicole jokingly asked if Eva wanted to help with the draft as well, Eva jumped in. They went back and forth about certain additions, with Eva suggesting Nicole touch on the hard times Nicole had gotten through. Nicole remarked that she and Ted had had lots of arguments and tears. The reason why were still too tender to address publicly.

After Nicole revealed that the usually even Ted would throw down for his family and patients, Eva asked what would make Ted mad. Nicole replied that Ted hated lies as Eva took that in. The women continued to go over potential points for the speech, with Eva ignoring Leslie's calls. Andre arrived to discuss the shots Nicole wanted to get for the awards ceremony. Nicole berated herself for forgetting to ask Eva to put Andre on her calendar. Eva offered to step back and implement their changes to the speech so Nicole could keep her appointment with Andre. Nicole reflected that the presentation wasn't even Eva's job. Eva reassured Nicole that making Nicole's life easier was her job. Nicole promised Eva she would find a way to pay Eva back for all her help.

Once alone, Eva's phone buzzed again. Eva answered and told Leslie that she shouldn't call her at work. Leslie said she couldn't wait until Eva could call her “Mama” again in public instead of just “Leslie.” Eva promised an update on her progress when she got home and reminded the anxious Leslie that they had to stick to their plan. “Delayed gratification is such a pain,” Leslie pouted.

Leslie was annoyed when Eva came home late from working on Nicole's speech. Eva gushed about also helping Nicole with picking up her designer dress and shoes for the gala, raving that the event would probably be on the news. Leslie said that she also had reason to be excited about the ceremony – it was the perfect place to expose Ted and Nicole as “the reprehensible human beings they really are.” Leslie could only imagine the looks on their smug faces.

When Eva said that Nicole wasn't really smug. When Eva said that Nicole was innocent in what Ted had done so they shouldn't spoil her big day, Leslie became frosty. She felt that Eva's insistence that the gala was too soon to enact their plan was an excuse and demanded to know if Eva was backpedaling. Eva produced a straw Ted had used, from which they could extract DNA for a paternity test, which delighted Leslie. If Ted tried to claim Eva wasn't his, Leslie would throw the test results in his face. As Leslie again focused on torpedoing Nicole's award ceremony, Eva tried to impress upon Leslie that any DNA test result couldn't be processed in time for it. Leslie trusted Eva's timing...but made a call asking for a favor once Eva left.

Andre returned to the hospital with Nicole, together going over the shots Andre wanted to get; Nicole thought images of her doing yoga would be silly, but he reiterated that she often recommended the practice to her patients. Nicole saw Ashley and asked how Derek was doing – and how Ashley was doing. Ashley looked at Andre and said that a good friend had told her not to expect the worst.

When Ashley checked on Derek again, she let him know that he'd have to stay at the hospital another day longer, maybe more. Derek wanted Ashley to be the one to nurse him back to health, not at his bedside, but in his hospital bed. Ashley smiled that “Superman” was on a time-out, at least until he could promise that he wouldn't try to kill himself again by staying too long in a burning building, as he had in the current instance. Derek said Ashley was good for him and she took his hand.

Vanessa arrived at the country club ready to work out and ready to play, but as she eyed Diego hungrily, Doug snuck up behind her and gave her a hug. Vanessa was surprised to see her husband so affectionate and good-humored. Doug announced that her sexy, romantic husband was back. Vanessa confessed that Doug had been so gloomy that she was beginning to worry. Doug promised that things were getting better all the time but caught his wife looking in Diego's direction. Vanessa deflected that she thought the drink belonging to the woman Diego was talking to looked interesting and knowingly added that she would later have what the woman was having.

Doug brought Vanessa the drink he thought she wanted and cheered when she announced she had sold four multimillion-dollar homes that month. Doug said he'd buy anything from Vanessa as she sent a call to voicemail.

At Orphey Gene's, Randy marveled at how casino owner Joey was able to zero in on clients and pull their strings. Joey replied that it was just a matter of gamblers feeling that gaming was better than food or sex, though he didn't understand the addiction. When Randy noted that Joey was good at manipulating addicts, Joey clued in that Randy was worried about “Dougie.” Randy reminded Joey that Doug didn't like that moniker, but Joey turned cold and said that Doug's name mattered as little to him as the man himself. Doug's only importance to Joey was what Doug could get for Joey.

With the amount of resources Joey had, Randy wondered why he would want anything from a random heart surgeon. Joey shut Randy down, growling that the matter was his own business. Joey got fed up and flamed Randy for dancing around the subject of Doug so much. Joey didn't care if Doug was Randy's childhood friend; Joey demanded that Randy stop caring about what happened to Doug. Randy admitted that he felt responsible since he was the one who brought Doug to Joey's casino. Joey figured Doug would have found his way to it on his own anyway. Randy worried that Doug's gambling was out of control and asked Joey to not hurt Doug...or worse.

Joey proclaimed that Doug was of more use to him alive. Randy wanted to know Joey's plans for Doug, but Joey shut down any further questions. Joey said Randy could protect Doug by doing his job – which included having Doug come into the casino that evening.

Meanwhile, at the country club, Doug avoided his own call from Randy. Vanessa assumed the hospital was trying to reach him, but Doug said he had the rare afternoon off and wanted to spend it with his wife. Vanessa griped that Doug hadn't been inclined to spend more time with her than necessary in recent days. Doug expressed remorse and branded himself a fool. Vanessa liked whatever was causing the change in her husband...but still excused herself to “work out.”

Having received Randy's text, Doug reported to the casino, where Joey invited Doug to play cards with some of the establishment's higher rollers. When Doug wavered, Joey deduced that Doug was hesitant because of money and had an employee plop a big stack of chips in Doug's hand. Doug eagerly joined the big-time table as Randy looked on.

Vanessa admired the muscles of another patron of the country club gym, which upset Diego. The personal trainer sent the other man away, and when he asked Vanessa how many men it was going to take to satisfy her, she slapped him. Vanessa contended that Diego didn't own her. Diego replied that no one could do her like he did, but Vanessa asserted that she wasn't looking for a commitment. Diego confidently replied that he could convince her otherwise. Vanessa smirked that she loved playing with him...until something better came along.

Doug blew his windfall and walked away from the table, but Joey fronted him even more money to try his hand again. Doug was unsure until Joey convinced Doug to go for it. As Doug continued to lose, Joey warned Randy to consider the cost of protecting his friend because of what Joey did to people who got in the way of his plans. When Randy probed, Joey finally confessed that he wanted to put Doug as far into debt as possible.

Martin received a tip that Smitty was still putting out feelers to resume his career as an investigative journalist. Smitty came home triumphant that he had found the kind of tomatoes Martin wanted, but Martin was annoyed that nothing he had said about Smitty remaining a househusband had sunk in. Smitty assured Martin that he loved him, but he needed his own life now that their children were old enough to take care of themselves. As the couple continued to argue, the kids, Tyrell and Samantha, entered and called for their parents to have a time-out.

Martin decreed that what he was discussing with Smitty didn't concern the teenagers, but Smitty, working off Martin's contention that his going back to work would negatively affect their charges, told them what he had planned. Both Samantha and Tyrell supported Smitty no matter what opposing arguments Martin threw at them. They felt that since Martin was allowed to chase his dreams, Smitty should be able to go after his own. Martin finally backed down and proposed that Smitty take one assignment and see how it went. Smitty encouraged the kids to let Martin off the hook, giving Martin a kiss. Martin declared that his family was everything he had wanted growing up and that he would walk through fire for them; the Richardsons then dove onto the couch and laughed.

Later, Smitty invited Martin to come to bed so he could “thank” him for softening his stance on Smitty getting back into reporting. Martin promised to join him once he got through some work emails, but Smitty wondered if Martin was trying to exhaust himself so he wouldn't dream. Martin fell asleep on the couch and indeed had another nightmare. When Martin woke up yelling, Smitty, Samantha, and Tyrell rushed down the stairs to check on him. Martin claimed he was fine and that he had stayed downstairs to double-check the locks and ensure that the condo was secure. Smitty assured the unnerved Martin that they were safe.
