5 Young and the Restless couples that should call it quits (and 5 that shouldn’t change)

The Young and the Restless works best when romance is just as important as the family drama and the business battles. Lately, some couples in Genoa City feel stuck, and the problems in their relationships are getting harder to ignore. Whether the spark has faded, the past keeps getting in the way, or the pairing never fully clicked, a few relationships need a real shakeup to move the story forward. Some might even need a full reset.

On the other hand, a few couples are steady and enjoyable and still bring something warm and grounded to the show. These relationships do not need chaos to stay interesting. Sometimes it is enough to let a strong couple keep growing at their own pace.

Still, several romances are ready for change, starting with the longest-tenured one, while others are better off exactly as they are.

5 Young and the Restless couples in need of a shakeup

1) Nikki and Victor

While this might be the most iconic pairing on the show, that does not make it untouchable. Nikki keeps trying to support Victor, but he keeps lying to her, brushing off concerns and hiding important information under the excuse of protecting her. His latest move, looking her in the eye and acting like her fears about Noah were overblown when he already knew Noah was missing and in danger, shows exactly why she is reaching her limit.

Nikki deserves better, and Victor needs a wakeup call. The break does not have to be permanent, but he needs to understand she is serious. Losing the woman he loves, even briefly, might finally force him to see that his obsession with crushing the competition and chasing revenge is coming at the expense of his marriage.

2) Noah and Sienna

They give off mother and son vibes, which is the first clue that this relationship is not working. Some of that comes from their time on Days of our Lives as mother and son, but the dynamic is still very present in Los Angeles. The pairing feels forced and contrived, and there is no real sign that it has any staying power now that they are in Genoa City. The same problems of betrayal, danger, and mixed loyalty are likely to follow them from California. Their relationship began in a shady way with an affair, and that was before Noah even knew who she was actually married to. The whole thing feels unbelievable and unconvincing, and it is not worth the danger it keeps bringing into their lives.

3) Adam and Chelsea

This couple did not need to reunite. They were doing just fine in their own relationships with other people, and both have arguably lost their spark since getting back together. Adam has been reduced to a watered-down version of himself, constantly second-guessing his decisions to avoid upsetting Chelsea. He's lost any edge to his character since the decision to give the pairing another shot. While Chelsea might need him to keep her character relevant, the relationship is detrimental to Adam, and finally severing their connection is the only way to salvage the role.

4) Devon and Abby

What a total snoozefest. This couple showed so much promise when they first had their affair. The fallout of Chance and Amanda walking in on them in their weakest moment could've gone somewhere, but lately, they are barely on the canvas. They could still be considered one of the younger couples on the show, but for some reason, they get hardly any screen time. It's difficult to get invested in the couple if they aren't showcased properly. With Melissa Ordway now on recurring status, that likely won't change, so for at least Devon's sake, let's separate the couple.

5) Cane and Phyllis

While these two aren't technically an official couple, it's time for the mind games to come to an end. Watching them attempt to outmaneuver each other and constantly lie has grown quite stale. There's no reason that either of them should be forced to contend with so many hoops for romance. It's understandable that they are drawn together because both are considered Genoa City outsiders, but that doesn't mean there's potential for a fairy-tale romance. The chemistry feels forced at times, and it would just be easier if they owned up to their hidden agendas and went on opposing sides.

5 Young and the Restless couples that should remain the same

1) Jack and Diane

When Diane first returned to Genoa City, it didn't seem like she and Jack were destined to become husband and wife, but what an incredible decision it turned out to be. It's great for Jack to stop wasting his time with women who didn't deserve him, and spend the rest of his life with someone like Diane. Despite everyone's concerns, she has not shown any hidden agenda, and she's been accepted by the rest of his family. The powers that be turned what could've been a stunt return into the most solid relationship on the canvas.

2) Kyle and Claire

It's difficult to know where these two stand sometimes, because one minute she wants nothing to do with him, and the next she's kissing him goodbye on Thanksgiving. Regardless of their current status, they must remain in each other's orbits for the foreseeable future. The two of them, embracing their inner dark side and teaming up to toast Audra's downfall, were chilling, revealing just how powerful they could be if they remained united. They have a lot of issues to work through, but they come from two powerful families, and there's nothing they can't accomplish together.

3) Billy and Sally

Sally brings out the best in Billy, and although he's always committed to change or referring to himself as a work in progress, it feels like he truly means it this time. She gives him the space to make his own mistakes, but she isn't going to sit around and let life pass her by while he figures them out. Sally is a go-getter, and she has the type of ambition and follow-through that Billy desperately needs in his life. Billy needs someone who will be direct, and Sally is that woman. As long as Sally remains at the helm of Abbott Communications and Billy isn't given more power than he can handle, these two have a shot at a long future.

4) Nick and Sharon

This is another example of a couple that isn't officially together, but unlike Cane and Phyllis, these two should move full-speed ahead. Nick has been Sharon's rock throughout countless traumas over the last year, and she has been just as gracious to him. In France, Sharon was by his side every step of the way, and the two have been inseparable. They've tried to rekindle their relationship in the past, and for various reasons, it didn't work out. However, they are a formidable force when they are together, and both have matured in new ways since their last go-around, so there's a decent chance that they can make it work this time. Keep them together!

5) Mariah and Tessa

If your fans are calling your storyline "incredibly hurtful," it's probably time to let the mouse go. Pairing Daniel and Tessa is a monumental mistake that could turn off thousands of viewers from the product. Mariah and Tessa are groundbreaking, and they just work. Remove Mariah from the abyss of the Boston clinic, and bring these ladies back together. They have been a staple of Genoa City for several years now, and they are ripping it apart for the sake of a Tessa and Daniel romance, something that hardly gets enough airtime as is. Mariah and Tessa should be allowed to face challenges, but there's no concrete reason to pull the plug on them.
