On today’s episode of The Young and the Restless, Cane (Billy Flynn) recalled talking to his dad, Colin, in his last days (a loving tribute to the late Tristan Rogers in his final television appearance). He thought about his dad’s advice and where things were today between him and his family.

Yesterday, Victor (Eric Braeden) had given Cane a handwritten letter by a woman named Madame de Leon, the former owner of the Dumas estate in Nice, France, where Cane had invited guests to his summer retreat and revealed his real identity. “Always remember what truly matters is the secret to dying without regret,” Cane read in a letter by Madame de Leon. He looked at a photo of Lily on his phone and then read the message from Charly asking him to stop calling.

Cane leaned his phone up against his glass of Scotch and began recording himself as he told the story of the truth being told. “I can’t risk these words never being said…more importantly, never being heard,” he said into the camera. And with that, we began to hear what Cane had really been up to for the last six years, and why.

In a video message Cane recorded for his kids, he said that when he was growing up, he never admired his father, Colin, and it made him feel tainted and not good enough. He said that he never wanted his own kids to feel like that about themselves because of who he was. He knew he’d let Maddie and Charlie down and hoped they’d never have to see the look of disappointment in their own kids’ eyes one day. Swearing that he had left town to do better and be better. He’d wanted to change everything about himself, and he started by changing his name.

Cane used the name Dumas to keep his personal and professional life separate, and started the company Arabesque with the hopes of creating something substantial and lasting for his kids. Once he began experiencing an unexpected level of success, it was addictive, and he kept wanting more. Looking back, Cane realized that although he was doing everything for his kids, his new, secret life took from them, too. “I kept secrets, told half-truths. I had my reasons that made sense to me at the time,” Cane explained with tears in his eyes.

Cane had regrets for the distance he put between himself and his kids, but he had more to reveal. Yes, Colin helped Cane build his empire at first, but he gave his son personal advice. And what he told him not only stuck with Cane, but convinced him that his dad was a changed man.

Colin told his son that he was out of time. He wanted Cane to have his family to lean on after he was gone and warned him not to leave it too long. “Aristotle Dumas is a name, not a person. Don’t lose sight of Cane Ashby, that’s the man who truly matters. Wait too long, the mask burns into the skin. And Dumas isn’t the one with the family to get back to,” Colin advised him. Cane said he wouldn’t let it get that far, but Colin ominously noted, “Famous last words.”

Cane believed that he still had work to do as Aristotle and that he wanted to carry out his plans correctly. He said he would tell his family the truth when the time was right — but Colin asked him to promise not to wait too long.

However, Cane did wait too long, and now he has to do damage control. Remembering his last conversation with his father and the advice he gave him, Cane made a decision: The plan to take over Genoa City is over, and he isn’t moving forward with it. Will that be the only way he can have a chance at repairing the damage with Lily, Charlie, and Maddie?
