On The Young and the Restless today, Victor wanted to blackmail Cane into forming an alliance, but is his evidence as powerful as he believes?

When Victor (Eric Braeden) went with Cane (Billy Flynn) to one of the train replicas that Cane keeps on every continent, Victor was impressed. Unfortunately, the grandiose life that Cane is living wasn’t something Victor envied — he was only impressed with his frenemy’s audacity.

Although Cane thought Victor was there to form an alliance, he mistook the path that Victor would take. He didn’t just want to join forces with Cane; he wanted to ensure he could control him. Victor pulled out his insurance: an envelope, which he tossed onto the table between them.

Cane picked it up and opened the envelope, pulling out a handwritten letter. The note turned out to be a last will and testament of Madame de Leon, a wealthy and elderly woman who had owned the chateau in Nice, France, where Cane had hosted his gathering of Genoa City’s business elite as Aristotle Dumas.

Victor’s extortion of Cane

The will declared that Madame de Leon had bequeathed her estate to Lord Jeremy Edgerton. Victor explained that Lord Edgerton was actually the last alias that Cane’s father, Colin Atkinson, had used in what Victor described as Colin’s final scam: stealing the estate from an elderly woman. Cane balked that he never knew about the alias, the woman, or the will. Regardless, Victor pointed out that all of Cane’s wealth and the money used to buy Arabesque had been the result of a massive fraud. He offered to never let the letter see the light of day, so long as Cane did as he asked and joined him in an alliance to take down Jabot.

Cane asked Victor if he was committing extortion, and Victor made no bones about it. He said it was no different than how Cane tried to get Nikki to sign over Chancellor in exchange for Nick’s freedom in France. Cane thought he might not have a choice but to say no to Victor’s alliance and its conditions, but does he?

Is Cane really backed into a corner?

Okay, so Victor presented a letter that Nick (Joshua Morrow) apparently found in a box in the room where he and Sharon (Sharon Case) were held captive in the French Riviera. But he brought the original with him and tossed it on the table. Yes, there could be photocopies…but they wouldn’t really be good enough to take down Cane in some way.

Now, we all know The Great Victor Newman is as tough as they get, but realistically, if Cane wanted to jump up and bolt with the letter in hand, it would be doubtful that Victor could catch him before he could find the dumpster fire that’s becoming his life, and toss the letter in to be permanently destroyed. But really, what does the letter do? Sure, Colin most likely swindled the lady into thinking he loved her to get to be named sole heir in her will…but is there any proof of it?

While intimidation is a typical Victor tactic, this letter is questionable because it might be too flimsy to be a concern for Cane. He could already know that and be playing Victor, or maybe he knows he has an ace up his sleeve. Now would be a great time for Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) to come to Genoa City and help keep Cane and his plans on track.
