On The Young and the Restless, Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) has quietly been managing the traumatic events in her life that began as a child. Kidnapped at birth, Mariah was raised by cult leader Ian Ward. When Mariah was older, she was hired by Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) to haunt Sharon (Sharon Case) but one thing led to another, and Mariah found out that Sharon was her mom, and she’d been robbed of a relationship with her her entire life. Mariah and Sharon bonded, and ultimately, Ian felt that Mariah deserted him. He has been obsessed with getting her back, most recently killing Heather Stevens (Vail Bloom) as part of his crazy plan to reunite with Mariah. Before that, he had kidnapped and drugged her, dressed her in a wedding gown, and tried to marry her.

Needless to say, Mariah has been through a lot. But she always seems to be there for everyone else, especially Sharon, and the attention is never on what Mariah needs in the aftermath. This time, after Ian murdered Heather, Mariah felt tremendous guilt. Ian ended up almost killing all of the Newman’s at the ranch one night, which Mariah also felt responsible for. All of her emotions finally caught up with her while she was alone on a business trip.

On today’s episode, Mariah confided in Sharon that she had the epiphany that she was broken but didn’t blame Ian. At some point in her life, although she thought she was a good person, Mariah knew that Ian was evil — and yet she stayed and followed him for years more. Accepting that reality, and coupled with what she did the night she was out of town, Mariah realized that she doesn’t have any character at all.

What did Mariah do?

Mariah has been extremely distressed since she got back from her business trip. Although she masked it with her wife, Tessa (Cait Fairbanks), she definitely is holding onto a secret. Mariah admitted to Sharon that when she was processing and releasing her trauma about Ian, she drank everything in the mini-bar — and then some. But what happened next?

What did Mariah do to make her believe that she would have “made Ian proud” or lacked character? Did she cheat on Tessa? Whatever it is, Mariah isn’t sharing it yet. She may tell Sharon, but she definitely doesn’t want Tessa to know. Is it really that bad? Or will she lose Tessa over it — to Daniel (Michael Graziadei)?
