The Young and the Restless character Mariah saw her situation get a lot worse when villain Ian Ward showed up at the end of Tuesday's episode. The former cult leader, played by Ray Wise, is presumed dead, but did he show up in the flesh or as a figment of Mariah's imagination?
Ian Ward, The Young and the Restless

Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) has already drawn a potential connection between the man (Michael Swan) whom Mariah had met on her business trip and Ian Ward (Ray Wise), the cult leader who helped raise her.
Clearly, he's on Mariah's mind, too. Ian appeared as some kind of apparition in Mariah's room at her clinic in Boston, which might end up causing the troubled woman to spiral even more!
Wise has a long history with soap operas, having been in the cast of Love of Life as lawyer Jamie Rollins. The actor rose to a new level of popularity when he was cast as Leland Palmer on Twin Peaks. He's played roles on Dallas, Savannah, 24, Reaper, and Fresh off the Boat.
Wise joined the cast of The Young and the Restless in 2014 as Ian Ward, the man who ran the cult that Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) was involved with when she became pregnant with her son, Dylan (Steve Burton).
The plot thickens

At first, there was speculation that Ian was Dylan's father. However, it turned out that Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) was the dad.
Wise's role as Ian won him the 2015 Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Guest Performer in a Drama Series. The actor returned to Genoa City in late 2024 as audiences learned that he was in cahoots with Jordan Howard (Colleen Zenk).
Ian appeared to have met his fate after being shot, but audiences learned that the villain is actually alive as his eyes popped open. (Isn't it always smart to leave a door open with a fantastic character like Ian Ward?)
It's most likely that this version of Ian is a figment of Mariah's imagination. The fact that he's dressed as a priest perhaps foreshadows that Mariah may confess to someone what happened on her mysterious business trip?
