The Young and the Restless isn't just about romance and corporate intrigue these days. There's the physical threat of danger in Matt Clark as Nick's nemesis since he was a teenager remains an active threat in Genoa City. Head writer and executive producer Josh Griffith says that Matt's threats will continue into the New Year.

What's next with Matt on The Young and the Restless

“I think we’ve got a really exciting story coming up that’s the continuation of Matt Clark’s [Roger Howarth] reign of terror," Griffith told TV Insider.

Watch for Matt to make new enemies the longer he remains in Genoa City as he continues to cause even more problems for Nick and Sharon. We recently saw Nick call Matt's bluff to jump off a railing at Chancellor Park in an effort to blame Nick for his death. Matt backed down and left, but his threats are far from over!

Like many good soap opera villains, Matt will return to the canvas lest anyone suspect that he's ever fully out of the picture. However, Griffith promises a dramatic showdown that, according to Griffith, will "incorporate a lot of aspects of the past in a very dramatic way."

Does this mean that Matt and Nick could take their battle back to Crimson Lights? A little over 30 (!) years ago, the two men had a knockdown, dragout fight in the coffee shop where they once double-dated with Sharon and Amy (Julianne Morris).

Matt's not afraid to die on The Young and the Restless

And if Matt is going to gather more enemies, could the show be gearing up for a murder mystery? There are already a host of suspects, including Nick, Sharon, Noah (Lucas Adams), and Sienna (Tamara Braun), who are fairly motivated to wipe Matt off the face of the earth.

Other suspects could include Det. Annie Stewart (Catherine Kresge), Nick's parents, Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), or Det. Burrow (Matt Cohen).

Still, if Matt were to be killed off, would he truly die? We're still not quite sure how Matt survived the last time he faced the Grim Reaper on Y&R. The last time he was on the show, when he was played by Rick Hearst (Ric, General Hospital), Matt pulled tubes out of his body, hoping to frame Nick for his death, as mentioned above. That plan failed. What other plans does Matt have up his sleeve? Stay tuned to find out!
