For her role as Diane on The Young and the Restless, Susan Walters won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Now, the actress is speaking out on what she didn't get to say in her acceptance speech.
The Young and the Restless, Susan Walters, Daytime Emmy winner
"I'm thrilled, thank you," Walters tells Soap Central upon receiving additional congratulations for her win. While the show wasn't on a strict time limit, as it wasn't on television, winners didn't stay up there for too terribly long once they won their award.
Was there anyone else Walters wanted to thank? "Matty Kane!" the actress enthuses about the show's talent relations/publicist. "He keeps us in such great spirits all the time, and takes such good care of us."
Also on Walters's gratitude list is Christian LeBlanc (Michael) and the show's stage manager, Fritz Brekeller. "I don't think I would have made it that first six months [when I returned to the show] without Fritz," Walters says. "I wasn't used to the volume of material. Thursday nights, I'd cry to Linden [Ashby, who was nominated in the Guest Performer category for this role as Cameron Kirsten] that I couldn't remember it."
Not only did Walters receive support at home, but she got it at the studio, too. "Fritz would say, 'Then, we'll do it line by line,'" the actress recalls.
The performer, who got her daytime start on ABC's Loving in 1983 as willful teenager Lorna Forbes, also wanted to thank Sally McDonald, the show's longtime director and newest co-executive producer. "Sally directed one of the scenes in my reel," Walters says.

The Daytime Emmy-winner also wants to give thanks to the entire Y&R hair, makeup, and creative team behind the scenes at the show. "We have to move really quickly," Walters says. "There's no fooling around! They are so much a part of what we do. I don't think about it. They're just there! I just do the scene."
On Walters's winning reel, there was a scene that took place between Walters and TV son, Michael Mealor (Kyle). "This woman from Atlanta said that she saw this scene of me, and she just started crying!" the actress says. "She said it's just so hard to be a parent. [Michael and I] were doing a scene about Jabot business, and then, Kyle got mad at Diane, and it just broke my heart. He was like, 'Screw you, Mom!' And that broke [Diane's] heart even more. Michael Mealor was so good in the scenes."
In the emotional showdown between mother and son, Walters recalls that she was wearing a green dress in The Young and the Restless scene. "I called it the 'green dress scene,'" she says. "It could have happened with any mom."
