Things are heating up this summer in the French Riviera, and it seems the social elite from Genoa City may have bitten off more than they can chew on The Young and the Restless.

The Young and the Restless’ new murder mystery

On The Young and the Restless, various Genoa City residents began receiving invitations to the private French estate of Aristotle Dumas last month, promising a reveal of who the elusive billionaire actually was. But the guests were met with more mysteries than his identity. They traveled in small groups on his private train to his remote estate, and then could only enter through a maze, taking them to a central court. Once their host revealed himself to be Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn), the games continued.

Cane told everyone that the roads and tracks had been washed out in a storm, although some found out he had been able to not only leave the estate, but also travel to Genoa City and back. Cane won’t tell anyone what he is really up to, and it’s still a mystery as to why some of them were even invited. With Chance (Conner Floyd), however, he was clear: Cane believed that someone would try to kill him before the week was up, and he wanted Chance to use his detective skills.

Next week, what feels like a luxurious vacation for some takes a deadly turn, and it’s Chance’s call to duty. In a train car, he addresses Lily (Christel Khalil), Devon (Bryton James), Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), Nick (Joshua Morrow), Cane, Amanda (Mishael Morgan), and Abby (Melissa Ordway). Apparently, someone has died, and Chance is classifying it as a murder.

Everyone is shocked, and even worse, Chance wants to question each one of them privately to discuss what they had been doing and where they were the previous hour. Abby can’t believe that Chance is actually wants to interrogate the people he knows so well, but Devon clarifies what Chance is saying: they are all suspects.

But who even died? What we do know is that Damian asks Cane if he put poison in his drink, and shortly thereafter, Damian seems to be having some sort of reaction. But why is Damian even there? He worked for Cane for several years, but claims that he never met him in person or knew his true identity. Before the invitations went out, Damian was abruptly fired, yet he got an invite anyway. Did Cane have another plan for Damian, but it went sideways when he realized Lily was in a relationship with him? Cane has been walking around with a bottle in his hand…did he harm Damian?

Others missing from the interrogation are the rest of the Newmans, the Abbotts, Michael and Lauren (Christian LeBlanc and Tracey Bregman), and Audra (Zuleyka Silver). Have they found a way out of the estate and gone back to Genoa City? Or are Kyle and Audra still in her train car bedroom and not caught up in the fray?

There may be one witness to the crime, though. Nick seemed quite freaked out when Phyllis questioned him about what he saw — and there was definitely someone watching Cane and Damian when he seemed to lose consciousness. Was that Nick? Does he think he witnessed a murder?

And then, there’s the knife. We saw someone walking with a large dagger — is it the same knife that Damian found on the train and put his fingerprints all over? With Chance on the case, he’s going to want the facts. He was brought there for this very reason, and seems determined to get the answers to his questions.

But is it really a murder, or just another one of Cane’s games? The guests could be part of a murder mystery that is a test of their loyalties, or some other way for Cane to determine who to trust. Will his guests turn on one another to save themselves the deeper the investigation goes?
