B&B's Kimberlin Brown dishes on Sheila's bizarre Y&R history

The Bold and the Beautiful's Kimberlin Brown (Sheila Carter) recalls the somewhat awkward moment The Young and the Restless had Michelle Stafford take over her popular daytime alter ego.

We've all had embarrassing moments we'd rather forget, and some would venture to say The Young and the Restless is in the same boat, having told a story years ago that viewers are still trying to get over. Not to rehash the mortifying moment too much, but it was something along the lines of bringing The Bold and the Beautiful's Sheila Carter to the canvas by having Y&R actress Michelle Stafford step into the role and then having Sheila get surgery to make herself to look like Stafford's other Genoa City character, Phyllis Summers. Oh, and then they killed the character. The storyline itself was inventive, but it left a lot of fans -- as well as Sheila's original portrayer, Kimberlin Brown -- supremely disappointed.

"I never understood [why Y&R wrote that storyline and cast Stafford in the role]. I was available!" Brown tells 24 Hours Vancouver. "I got a lovely call from Michelle at the time, who said, 'I'm so excited to play your role but are you okay?' And I was. I had no choice. The Y&R writers obviously [had] their reasons and a story they wanted to tell."

Luckily, B&B's head writer, Bradley Bell, has undone some of the damage by bringing Sheila (and Brown) back to her original soap -- though it does require that viewers suspend disbelief and erase whatever memories they might have of the character dying on Y&R, which the actress says shouldn't be too hard, if you think about it.

"I was never killed on B&B," she points out, adding that Bell has done a really good job of bringing Sheila back to the soap world. "[She] just wants to be loved and accepted. Even as an evil character, you felt sorry for her, regardless of how outrageous her acts were... She [wants] to be good now. She changed her game."
