The Young and the Restless is offering a new twist in the Ashley-Tucker saga, but how did things change in the blink of an eye?

For months, The Young and the Restless fans have wondered what really went on with Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and Tucker (Trevor St. John) on their Paris honeymoon. It seemed like a he said, she said situation in which either one person was lying, or each was remembering a different version of events.

We finally learned that Ashley was the one remembering things wrong when she and Traci questioned the staff in the caf where Ashley claimed Tucker got violent. The staff took Tucker's side, and Ashley began questioning her sanity -- as did the audience.

Traci returned to Genoa City first to inform the rest of the Abbott clan that Ashley was losing it. Then, Ashley came home and seemed to prove Traci right. She was disheveled, seemed confused, and ranted about the evils of Tucker -- then a car accident seemed to change everything.

After the crash, all she could remember was a past accident from years ago. Sitting alone on the Abbott living room couch, she seemed to descend into madness, but then everything changed in an instant. The next thing we knew, Tucker walked into his hotel room and found a calm and composed Ashley sitting in a chair, telling him he was right about everything. She seemed more like the Ashley of yesteryear -- composed and in control. So, what the heck happened?

Ashley could definitely be playing Tucker and trying to con him and Audra, but what if this story takes us back into Ashley's long history on the soaps.

Conventional wisdom would say Y&R is giving Ashley a dissociative identity disorder (DID) story that is a typical soap trope. But why would Ashley suddenly exhibit a split personality in her 60s? Could the other personality (or personalities) have been there for years, and we never even noticed? Ashley has had two major breakdowns since the 1980s, and they involved lost children and parents.

When Ashley first learned that Brent Davis was her father, not John Abbott, she lost it and developed amnesia. She had another breakdown again a few years later after she aborted Victor's baby. Her last breakdown came when she was married to Victor for a second time, fell down the stairs, and lost another child.

Could Y&R be trying to retcon Ashley's past breakdowns and tell us it was always DID, a disorder than Ashley maybe had since childhood? That would explain Ashley's sudden change and her history as a character that goes back to 1982 -- and it would certainly give fans something to talk about.
