The Young and the Restless' Bryton James wants Devon to take a walk on the wild side

Bryton James has spent 20 years playing Devon on The Young and the Restless and has some thoughts about his character.

Bryton James was still a teenager when he landed the role of Devon Hamilton on The Young and the Restless. No stranger to television, James began playing Richie Crawford on the hit sitcom Family Matters during his preschool years. James now has more than 30 years on TV behind him, 20 of which have been on Y&R, so he knows his character well.

After two decades, James is used to playing the good guy, but sometimes playing good all the time can get boring. Devon has had some shades-of-grey moments, especially when he had an affair with his father's wife, Hilary, and slept with Abby while dating Hilary's twin, Amanda. However, for the most part, Devon tries to stay on the straight and narrow.

That humdrum life usually finds Devon in the middle of corporate warfare, something James is getting a bit bored with, since none of these business-savvy characters are exactly poor.

"You have no idea how often when we're running lines, I stop and jokingly say, 'You know, I have a gazillion dollars. In real life, none of these problems would matter to me. Go run the company however you want!'" James told Soaps.com.

Devon's latest corporate drama involves demerging Chancellor-Winters and creating two separate companies again, but James would like to see his character break out of that mold and do something truly different.

"I'd love to play something where Devon does something truly evil, something that's very out of character for him," James said. "As an actor, you're always looking to play something new, interesting, and different. And certainly, Devon has been, for the most part, the good, stable guy. You wouldn't expect him to do something awful."

Could Devon snap and commit a heinous crime, or could he one day morph into a ruthless corporate raider like Victor Newman?
