On The Young and the Restless today, Summer made a surprise exit. She said she’ll be back — but will she look the same when she returns to Genoa City?
Summer Newman on The Young and the Restless

Today on The Young and the Restless, Summer (Allison Lanier) was blindsided when both Chelsea (Melissa Claire-Egan) and Sally (Courtney Hope) effectively resigned from their positions at Summer’s company, Marchetti. Although neither intended to put Summer in a bad position, they didn’t realize the other was also planning on leaving, and ultimately, Summer was left in the lurch.
Summer wished she could talk Sally and Chelsea out of leaving her company to go work with their boyfriends, but knew it was to no avail. She swiftly decided to go to Europe and to come back after she found a new creative executive to replace them.
Summer said goodbye to her parents, Nick (Joshua Morrow) and Phyllis (Michelle Stafford), then went to the Abbott mansion, where she said adios to Harrison (Redding Munsell) and Kyle (Michael Mealor).
Allison Lanier leaves The Young and the Restless

While the scenes of Summer leaving town today were appropriate, surely she has left Genoa City multiple times over the years, and we didn’t see her say goodbye to anyone. Summer called her parents to Society and hugged them each goodbye, and even got a goodbye hug out of Kyle. And while Sally and Chelsea’s conversation with Summer was pivotal, the way Courtney Hope (Sally) and Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) welled up as Summer wished them well may have had more meaning today.
Two days ago, Allison Lanier, who plays Summer Newman, stunned fans by announcing on her X (formerly Twitter) account that today’s May 2nd episode was to be her last. “Hi guys!! This Friday, May 2nd, will be my last episode on Y&R! I've loved the journey and learned so much but it's time to grow in a different direction... very grateful for all of the Y&R fans who have supported me,” she wrote.

Understandably, fans were upset at the news, telling the actress how much they loved her portrayal of Summer, and that they looked forward to seeing what projects were on her horizon.
Since taking over the role of Summer in 2022, Lanier has appeared in more than 300 Y&R episodes. Last year, she earned her first Daytime Emmy award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
