Four lives lost on The Young and the Restless

This summer brought many surprises for fans of The Young and the Restless, but one thing most did not see coming was the untimely loss of four men. Change is going to come, but let's take a look at those lost and what could have been.

Damian Kane

Jermaine Rivers sauntered into Genoa City with a huge secret: Not only was he the real Damian Kane, but he wasn't here to stay. Fans were riveted by the reveal that Holden Novak (Nathan Owens) was Damian's employee and best friend, who had been sent to meet Nate (Sean Dominic) and pretend to be his boss. When he met Damian in the park, the secret was exposed, and the real story began. But then it turned out that Damian's backstory of being the undiscovered son of Nathan Hastings Sr wasn't the start of many possible storylines at all, it was the beginning of the end. The new character with a legacy background was invited to the elite party at the estate of Aristotle Dumas, and he happily accepted so he could spend more time with Lily (Christel Khalil) — and was just as surprised as the rest of us to find out that his former boss was her ex. We may never know why Cane actually invited Damian, but his mom's gut feeling that the trip was dangerous was right.

Carter

Cane's assistant extraordinaire, Carter (Vincent Stalba), instantly piqued fans' interest when he answered the phone for his boss and smoothly deterred anyone from getting direct contact. He was clearly loyal to Aristotle Dumas, but it wasn't until guests arrived at the estate that they found out he was also cold. Carter's greeting as he thrust people carelessly into the maze set the tone for what was to come. But no one was prepared for his demise when he admitted to killing Damian, shot Chance when he tried to take the gun from him, and then turned the gun on himself, knowing there was no way out of the mess he was in.

Chance Chancellor

Genoa City's finest detective found out when he arrived at the party that he wasn't just a guest: he was about to be put on Cane's payroll as his personal detective. Tasked with figuring out who would want to kill Cane, Chance spent his time playing hacky sack and keeping an eye out for strangers. But when Damian got the knife in his back that Cane believed was meant for him, Chance hopped into high gear, trying to determine which one of his friends had tried to kill Cane. In the end, Carter admitted to the murder as Chance eavesdropped. But when he confronted him, everything went sideways. Carter grabbed Lily and held her at gunpoint as he tried to escape. Cane convinced him to let her go and turn the gun on him instead, and that's when Chance intervened. He and Carter wrestled for the gun until it went off — and Chance had taken a deadly bullet to the chest. He died moments later in Cane's arms, leaving Billy (Jason Thompson) and Lily in shock as they watched him die.

While most of the Newmans were in the French Riviera dealing with Cane's attempts to take Chancellor, Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and Claire (Hayley Erin) were at home tending to Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck). He was hospitalized with pneumonia, and last Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Nick (Joshua Morrow), and Victor had heard was that he was on the upswing. But when Adam (Mark Grossman) crashed the party, he had no idea that when he ran back down the mountain and got home, Cole would have died while he was gone. The Newmans are going to be crushed to learn that someone else died during their time in France, and it was a family member. But they will be especially heartbroken that none of them were there for Victoria and Claire in their time of need.
