Y&R head writer and executive producer Charles Pratt leaves daytime for primetime gig

The Young and the Restless' head writer and executive producer, Charles Pratt Jr., is dropping the Genoa City pen and will begin duties on a primetime series, instead.

It looks like Charles Pratt Jr.'s time as head writer for The Young and the Restless has come to an end.

The scribe, who had both loyal fans and haters during his one-and-a-half-year run at Y&R, has been named new show runner and executive producer of the upcoming Fox series Star, from Tom Donaghy and Empire creator Lee Daniels.

The announcement that Pratt is taking over comes hot on the heels of the news that producer Charles Murray walked away from Star due to creative differences over the direction of the primetime soap.

Whispers started last week when Pratt was reportedly not in attendance at a party celebrating Y&R's 11,000th episode.

Y&R reps weren't immediately available for comment, but the TV Line item that broke the news of Pratt's new gig refers to him as the former head writer of Y&R, indicating that he has parted ways with the CBS series. There's no word at this time on who will take over head writing duties, but perhaps the show's new executive producer, Mal Young, will step in for the time being?

Star is an Atlanta-set drama that follows three young women (Ryan Destiny, Jude Demorest, and Brittany O'Grady) who form a musical group and experience the music business' highs and lows on their road to fame. The cast also includes Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, and Nicholas Gonzalez.

The series is slated to premiere on Fox in early 2017 on Wednesdays at 9/8C.

Prior to joining Y&R in January of 2015, Pratt worked on a variety of shows, including The Lying Game, Desperate Housewives, Melrose Place, and Ugly Betty, as well as soaps All My Children, General Hospital, and Santa Barbara.

What do you think about Pratt's departure from Y&R? Will you miss him at the helm? Do you plan to tune in to his new series, Star?
