Brief Character History

AJ always had problems taking responsibility for his actions, including poor performance in school, his habit of drinking and driving, and his history of dead-end relationships-these things were, of course, no fault of his. When AJ had begun classes at Port Charles University, he began running a loan shark operation, and was arrested for drunk driving, for the first time. He was caught up in a scandalous affair with an older woman named Nancy Eckert; due to this affair, Lila cut off his inheritance and sent him to work as an orderly at General Hospital.

In 1992, AJ was arrested two more times for drunk driving. The first time, Alan left him in jail overnight, hoping it would teach him a lesson, but it didn't. The second time, AJ's girlfriend, Nikki Langton, told the police that she had been at the wheel. AJ and Nikki planned to marry, but Alan paid Nikki to leave town.

In 1993, AJ took a job as a desk clerk at the Port Charles Hotel, which was owned by Ned. It was not long before AJ was having an affair with Ned's lover, Julia Barrett, who sold her shares in the hotel to her boy toy before leaving town.

In 1995, he was in a car accident with Alan while driving drunk. A year later he was in a wreck with Jason that left Jason with brain damage. (Jason had no recollection of his family.) Ned took the blame for the accident to protect the family. In 1997, AJ confessed that Jason's accident was his fault.

The fallout from the revelation caused AJ to go out and get drunk and have a one-night stand with Carly Roberts. Carly became pregnant with AJ's baby. To pass her child off as Tony's, she went as far as drugging AJ, dumping him in a laundry cart, and pouring booze on him (hoping he'd leave town). He found out, but agreed to keep her secret from Tony. When he planned to fight for sole custody, she lied that her baby was Jason's, and passed it off as Jason's for over a year.

AJ tried to make a clean break of the Quartermaines, moving out of the mansion, even getting a job at the hospital gym. Ultimately, he was unable to resist the Q lure. Meanwhile, AJ resumed a romance with Keesha Ward, whom he'd had feelings for, ever since her relationship with Jason. They dated until early 1998, when she went to visit her father and never returned.

When AJ found out the truth about Michael, AJ married Carly and they shared custody of Michael with Jason. AJ was then appointed CEO of ELQ.

Continuing to be insecure about his abilities as an executive and husband, AJ constantly suspected Carly of cheating with Jason. When he learned she was pregnant, he assumed it was Jason's; he agreed to pass the baby off as his, seeing the potential for irony and Edward's approval. However, Sonny barged into a Q family gathering, announcing his paternal claim. AJ and Edward coerced Carly into staying at the mansion, but a few weeks later, Sonny (after a tip from Jason) unearthed proof of AJ paying for the arson that burned Sonny and Jason's warehouse down. He forced AJ to sign over full custody of Michael, and to divorce Carly.

Thrown out of ELQ and disinherited by the entire family, AJ began drinking again. He had several physical confrontations with Carly, including one on the stairs in which he grabbed her hand. Pulling away, she fell backwards down the stairs and lost her unborn son. She later tried to kill AJ at the Nurses' Ball, to avenge her son's death.

Self-destructive to the extreme, AJ continued drinking and began devising ways to squander his money. He shamelessly pursued Hannah Scott, the only person who seemed to care about him, even though she was dating Marcus Taggert. One day she found him in his hotel room, unconscious. He woke up in the hospital and learned he had almost died of alcohol poisoning. Hannah and his family begged him to go to rehab, but he refused and chose to quit on his own.

His stalking finally began to win Hannah over (especially after he bought a football team), as her relationship with Taggert ended. She attended Winterfest as AJ's date, but only weeks later, she left town on a secret assignment, saying goodbye to him without a great deal of warmth.

Monica's cancer scare reminded AJ how important family was, and he moved back into the mansion, banding with Ned, of all people, to protect Emily from Edward's tyranny, and also planning to reclaim Michael. AJ received support from an unexpected place upon the arrival of his long-lost Q sibling, Skye, a kindred spirit who had battled alcoholism and other personal demons. Though he originally blackmailed her into helping him fight Carly and Sonny over custody of Michael, the scheme was abandoned because of their genuine empathy for each other, and Skye's hatred of Sonny. The black sheep brother and sister became friends, confidantes, and co-conspirators.

In January 2002, AJ began pursuing Courtney Matthews, Sonny's newfound sibling. It wasn't love that drove him-he was selling the young woman the ultimate "Pretty Woman" fantasy as part of a plot to drive Sonny crazy and get his son Michael back. AJ even went so far as to marry Courtney. When Sonny found out, he nearly killed AJ Thinking he finally had Sonny where he wanted him, AJ proposed a deal: if Sonny gave Michael back to AJ, then AJ would divorce Courtney. But Sonny said no deal, and AJ started drinking again on his wedding night.

He eventually realized that he actually loved Courtney. When his mother called Courtney trash and slapped her, AJ and Courtney moved out of the Q mansion into a dumpy apartment. Edward threatened to take all of AJ's claims to Q money away if AJ didn't keep trying to regain custody of Michael using Courtney. AJ refused and Edward had all of AJ's money frozen. Miserable, AJ drove drunk right into the strip club called the Oasis. Wanting to protect her husband, Courtney made a secret deal with the owner to become a stripper in exchange for the owner's silence regarding AJ's guilt in the accident.

Regretting his actions, AJ tried to make it on his own and even got a job as a forklift driver to support his bride. But when AJ managed to tell Michael what Sonny did for a living, Sonny retaliated by taking AJ to the Oasis and showing him what his wife was up to. Humiliated and angry, AJ burned down the Oasis. But he stayed out of jail when Courtney begged Jason to cover up AJ's guilt.

Wanting his wife to lean on him more, AJ hired the former owner of the Oasis to stalk Courtney. Since AJ was supposedly out of town looking for work, Jason protected Courtney at Sonny's request. The two grew closer. Courtney shot Coleman when he entered the apartment one night and Coleman nearly revealed that AJ hired him. While Courtney listened in on the other side of the wall, Coleman tricked AJ into revealing that he had hired Coleman to stalk Courtney. Finally seeing her husband for what he was, she left him. AJ tried to get Courtney back and even got a job from Ned at ELQ. But Courtney wanted a divorce. Blaming Jason for his situation with Courtney, AJ retaliated by trying to frame Jason for Alcazar's murder. He tried to partner with Skye in his endeavors, but she had her own fish to fry: Brenda. Together they hired a fake witness to say she saw Brenda push Alcazar off the balcony. Courtney found out and pulled a gun on AJ to get him to confess to his misdeeds. But AJ's plans were ultimately foiled when the real killer came forward with new evidence, and Jason and Brenda were cleared of all charges.

After that, AJ tried various tactics to get Michael back. He also assisted Edward and Alan in a plot to gain custody of baby Kristina, Ned's daughter with Alexis Davis. But when Edward didn't deliver on his promise to give him more power at ELQ, AJ and Skye kidnapped Kristina. Miraculously, they weren't charged for it. AJ got in one last dig at Courtney when he invited her stripper friends to her bridal shower and paid her mother to try to convince her not to marry Jason.

AJ rallied around Emily with the rest of the family when she was fighting breast cancer. But shortly after she came back from the brink of death, AJ went back to his plans to take over at ELQ. He got his chance to become CEO when Ned was falsely accused of rape. Shortly after, he got his hands on four of the five cards in the Dead Man's Hand, which were the actual cards held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot and killed. AJ stole the cards from John Jacks, who believed them to be his lucky charm. He tried to find the last card, which was continually being passed back and forth between Jasper Jacks and newcomer Samantha McCall. More people wanted the cards than AJ anticipated, and the ones he had were stolen from him. He tried to get the cards back at Luke's secret auction of them, but was outbid. So AJ went back to running ELQ, which he did so poorly that he left the company wide open for a corporate raid. Tired of the constant criticism from his family and the lack of love and praise from them, AJ exacted his revenge. He emptied their bank accounts and took off into the sunset with Lydia Karenin.??

AJ reappeared a few years later as the mastermind behind the plot to kidnap Sonny's children, all so he could get Michael. He allowed everyone in Port Charles to believe that Michael was dead for weeks, but Jason soon realized AJ was alive and well. After shooting Alan in the back, AJ and Jason fought on the upper story until both men went flying downstairs. AJ ended up in the hospital with a broken back and, hours later, was suffocated by Dr. Asher Thomas. After AJ's death it was revealed that years earlier, AJ had hired Dr. Thomas to kill had been blackmailing Dr. Thomas.
