Brief Character History

An orphan from Phoenix, Emily was left in Alan and Monica Quartermaine's care after her mother died of cancer. She moved to Port Charles and immediately befriended Lucky Spencer and his cousin Sly Eckert. Unhappy with the Quartermaines, Emily ran off with Lucky. He was helping a friend and hoping to reunite his parents and she was searching for her aunt. After some close calls, Emily and Lucky returned to PC and she allowed herself to be adopted by the Quartermaines.

After becoming depressed and withdrawn, Emily turned to drugs and alcohol to have some fun. She became friends with a boy named Matt who became her drugs supplier. He eventually overdosed and she realized what trouble she was in. She then got mixed up in Monica's troubles with Dr. Dorman after he stole her diary. Afterwards, she spent a few months in Italy to recover from her devastation. When she returned, she became closer to Brenda Barrett and started modeling. She was blackmailed by an unknown person and joined forces with Nikolas, Lucky and Elizabeth to catch him. He was eventually caught and not only revealed to be Emily's photographer but also Elizabeth Weber's rapist.

Later on, Emily met the son of Lily Rivera Corinthos and Miguel Morez almost as soon as he came to town. The two were instantly captivated by one another and waged a war against the Quartermaines and Juan's adoptive father to stay together. They won their war and Juan's father agreed to let him remain in Port Charles with Lieutenant Taggert as his guardian. After a while, Emily discovered that Juan had an amazing voice and urged him to pursue a singing career at her cousin Ned's record company, L&B Records. Juan was reluctant at first, but he began to warm up to the idea and even sang a number with Emily and Elizabeth Webber at the 2000 Nurses' Ball.

After the Nurses' Ball, Allison Barrington, granddaughter of the wealthy, well-to-do Amanda Barrington, began to develop eyes for Juan. She invited him to a rave that was being held in an old, abandoned house. Even though she didn't want to, Emily went with Juan to the rave, along with Elizabeth Webber, Lucky Spencer, and Nikolas Cassadine. While there, Emily and Juan got into a big fight and then Juan went off with Allison and left Emily alone. As she was walking into another room, she caught sight of Allison and Juan kissing. Since she was upset enough already, she accepted a beer that was offered to her, but little did she know, the beer was drugged. She then began talking to a guy named Ted and eventually, he suggested that they leave the rave and go somewhere quieter. The next morning, Emily woke up naked in a motel room with a drug needle in her hand. Ted was next to her, but he was dead. Fortunately, Lucky showed up soon after. He had tracked her down at the motel by asking people at the rave if they had seen anything. After taking Emily to Elizabeth, Lucky and Nikolas got Ted's body and put it in a freezer in the basement of Nikolas' uncle's mansion on Spoon Island. As if she hadn't been through enough, Emily began receiving mysterious phone calls from an unknown girl saying that she knew what Emily had done. The girl blackmailed Emily into giving her a large sum of money for her silence. Nikolas supplied the cash and he and Lucky put it in the drop off spot and then hid to see who the blackmailer was. It turned out to be Gia Campbell, the younger sister of Lieutenant Taggert. When Nikolas and Lucky discovered this, they got Gia to end the blackmailing by threatening to tell Taggert that his sister was in town. Since she didn't want to see her brother, Gia agreed to stop blackmailing Emily, and also to help Lucky and Nikolas find out who set up Emily and killed Ted. After going to a few more raves and asking people there if they knew Ted, Lucky and Nikolas found out that Ted was really an undercover cop who was trying to help Emily. A guy named Zander Smith was responsible for drugging Emily and setting her up. However, unbeknownst to them, it had been Zander's employer, Joseph Sorel who was responsible for Ted's murder. They decided to plant Ted's body in the trunk of Zander's car at the next rave and then call the police. On the night of the rave, everything was going as planned until the police showed up. Zander got scared and grabbed a frightened Emily at gunpoint and drove away.

After a few unsuccessful escape attempts, Emily began to see that Zander wasn't all bad, he was just caught in a tough situation. She believed him that Sorel had killed Ted and agreed to stay with him until he got to safety at the Canadian border. When they finally arrived at the border, Lucky, Liz, and Emily's brother, Jason Morgan showed up. Emily pleaded with Jason to let him go and not turn him in, and since Zander hadn't hurt her, Jason agreed. A couple days after she returned home, Zander showed up at her bedroom window. They had connected and he had no one else to go to. He asked her to run away with him for real, and although tempted, Emily knew that she couldn't go with him. She did however, convince him to go to the PCPD and turn himself in. He hadn't killed anyone, so she thought his charges wouldn't be too tough. But that idea was ruined when Nikolas and Lucky saw them talking in the park one day. They attacked Zander and then called the police despite Emily's anger. Zander was taken to jail at the PCPD, but Emily visited him everyday. During all of this, Juan began to get jealous. They hadn't really been a couple since before Emily was kidnapped, but Juan wanted her back and had apologized profusely for his mistakes and told her that he loved her. Not only had he kissed Allison, but Emily had also caught him with Allison's friend Sherry. Finally Emily decided that she would rather be with Zander, and so when Juan forced her to chose, she told him it was over.

Emily arranged for Alexis Davis to be Zander's lawyer, and in exchange for his testimony against Sorel, Sonny Corinthos would give him protection in the event that Sorel tried to kill him. Sonny also agreed to post Zander's bail of $2 million. On the night that Zander was released, Emily, Zander, Alexis, and Sonny were walking down the steps of the PCPD, when two gunmen dresses as police officers opened fire on them. Zander jumped on top of Emily to protect her and he was hit in the arm. Emily's family began to fear for her life and when she wouldn't agree to stop seeing Zander, they took her to boarding school in California against her will. Even though he was set to testify against Sorel very soon, Zander jumped bail and went to California to go get Emily. Although they were presented with the opportunity to run away to Mexico, they decided that the best thing would be to go back to Port Charles so that Zander could turn himself in and still testify. Unfortunately, Zander made the mistake of going back to the Quartermaine mansion with Emily, and Emily's grandfather, Edward Quartermaine, called the police and had him arrested. Sonny posted bail for Zander again since he was vital to the case against Sorel. Furious with her family, Emily moved out of the house and into a room at Kelly's. One special night, Emily lost her virginity to Zander. They decided to leave town. But the train they boarded was involved in a severe crash and Emily was paralyzed from the waist down. Zander realized that Emily was so wrapped up in his problems and her devotion to him that she wouldn't be able to focus on her recovery. Soon after she left for the rehab facility, Zander broke up with her.

Little was heard of her for the next 2 years, until she came back to town. She was defending Elizabeth, making love with Zander, talking with Lucky - the same old Emily. But in reality, very different. Only Monica and Alan knew that Emily had been diagnosed with breast cancer, the disease which had killed her biological mother. Emily refused traditional treatment, since that hadn't helped her mother, and began making bizarre decisions under the guise of doing what she thought was best. She went to see Nikolas at Wyndemere to tell him that she had breast cancer and was going to die. She asked Nikolas if he would pretend to be in love with her to spare Zander from having to watch her die. Nikolas was reluctant at first but eventually capitulated. At the Quartermaine mansion, she told Zander that she loved Nikolas and was engaged to him. Zander was surprised and didn't want to believe Emily but had little choice. What Emily and Nikolas didn't plan on was truly falling in love. After hearing Emily day after day saying she couldn't fight the cancer, Nikolas made Emily attend a breast cancer survivor meeting. He wanted her to realize she could fight this disease and be a survivor. After the meeting, Emily found Nikolas on the bluff at Wyndemere and told him that she was mad at him for making her attend the meeting. Then she thanked him because she was now more determined than ever to fight the cancer. They embraced and shared a passionate kiss. Emily pulled away and fled, afraid of her new found feelings for Nikolas. When Nikolas planned to give her an engagement ring that had been in the Cassadine family for centuries Emily refused to accept it and insisted that they stop lying to everyone. She decided to tell Zander the truth and thanked Nikolas for being such a wonderful friend. Nikolas was devastated because he was in love with Emily. When Emily told Zander about her breast cancer, he promised to stand by her side. She loved Zander but she couldn't get Nikolas out of her head. One day at Kelly's, Emily overheard Nikolas tell Lydia that Emily will always have his heart. When Nikolas realized Emily had heard him he followed her. In her bedroom, Nikolas and Emily decided to be honest with each other and admit their true feelings, however they both soon realized that they could never be together because of Zander and Lydia. On a visit to Wyndemere to see Nikolas, Emily ran into Lydia who promptly informed her that she and Nikolas were engaged. Emily knew that Nikolas was only marrying Lydia to restore the Cassadine family fortune. On the day of his marriage, Emily went to see Nikolas to tell him goodbye and that he needed to marry someone whom he loved. Nikolas said he would cancel his wedding if he could have a future with Emily. Emily said she intended to stay with Zander because she had hurt him too much already so Nikolas went through with the wedding and married Lydia. One night as Zander and Emily were preparing to go out on a date, Monica approached them with the heartbreaking prognosis that the aggressive chemo treatments that Emily was undergoing were breaking down her immune system and that she had to stop the treatments immediately. Emily was devastated and told Zander she had to leave. Emily took off to be alone but ended up calling Nikolas. They met at the docks where she gave him the awful news. Nikolas asked her to just keep fighting day by day, if not for herself then for him. She told Nikolas that she would, while Zander overheard them. It was then that Zander realized Emily needed Nikolas. In the hospital, Emily's immune system began shutting down and she contracted meningitis. Believing she was going to die, Emily decided that she wanted to give Zander something special so they got married. As Emily lay unconscious, on the verge of death, she dreamed she had married Nikolas and as they kissed she awoke and immediately began improving. Nikolas later came to see her to give her a bracelet as a wedding present. Emily told him that she intended to stay with Zander even after Nikolas asked her to marry him. With their hearts still with one another, Emily fully recovered and resumed her life with Zander. One night while at the cottage, Emily called Nikolas to help with the fuse box who promptly arrived and waited out the storm alone with Emily. Emily admitted to Nikolas that the kiss in her dream that had brought her back from the brink of death was from him. Nikolas said he had the same dream and the two started to make love, but when the lights came back on they realized they couldn't be alone together anymore. Unbeknownst to them, there was someone taking pictures of them together. The pictures fell into Zander's hands which later led him to attack Nikolas at the hospital.Emily couldn't get Nikolas out of her mind and visa versa. The night of the Halloween costume ball she confessed her love to Nikolas, the two kissed and she ran to the cottage. Nikolas followed Emily and once there he took his wedding band off and told Emily his divorce was final. As they kissed, Zander came in and confronted Nikolas and Emily. Emily told Zander their marriage was over and she wanted to be with Nikolas. After Zander stormed out, Nikolas and Emily made love for the first time. Zander was heartbroken and angry over losing Emily so he started working for Faith, who held Nikolas' family debt. Zander wanted some way to get back at them. Once Emily's divorce was final Nikolas proposed to her and of course she accepted. The Quartermaines were not happy with the engagement, especially when they found out Nikolas was destitute. After Faith sank Nikolas' freighter, he and Emily realized it had sunk on top of a ship called "The Courage," which was a ship the Quartermaines owned in the 1700's. It was to have gone down with a priceless treasure that Blackthorn the pirate, and Constance Quartermaine had stolen. Emily and Nikolas went to the Quartermaines' and they agreed to split the findings half and half. Nikolas hired a diver, Cody McCall, to search for the treasure, which later was revealed to have been stolen from the vessel. Cody was found dead at Wyndemere and Nikolas was framed, by Zander, for his murder but Ric cleared Nikolas of all charges. Emily and Nikolas were determined to find the treasure so they looked for clues in Blackthorn's journal. One night Emily was knocked out by Ben Rogers, who was searching for the treasure himself. Nikolas found Emily in the grotto and wanted her to stop searching for fear he would loose her. Emily told Nikolas that they had to keep searching for the treasure and they did - together. Blackthorn's journal led them to a place called "Blood Point". They realized Helena was the one who had stolen the treasure and that it was hidden on Spoon Island. They found the treasure and took it back from Helena. The treasure was to be auctioned off at the Port Charles hotel, but a fire broke out and the treasure vanished. As they waited for the helicopter, a chandelier crashed and landed on Emily. Monica bandaged her leg but Emily needed to be hospitalized quickly. With only one helicopter chance left, Nikolas gave up his spot for Emily. Emily didn't want to leave but was given little choice. As they started to lift up off of the roof she watched as the hotel roof collapsed and Nikolas vanished. Nikolas was presumed dead but Emily never gave up hope. She knew Nikolas was alive and that he would find his way back to her and she was right. A few days after the fire as Emily remembered the good times with Nikolas, a hurt and battered Nikolas walked back into Wyndemere and to Emily. Emily couldn't believe it and ran and embraced him. Emily told Nikolas that Zander was killed in the fire. Nikolas blamed himself since he and Zander had a fight in the basement and Nikolas knocked Zander out and locked him inside before alerting the police. After Ric arrested Nikolas for Zander's murder when it was discovered that the body found in the basement died as a result of a blow to the head and not the fire. Emily went to Jason and asked him to tell Ric Lansing that Detective Capelli confessed to killing Zander before he himself died. Jason agreed and Nikolas was free to go. It was later revealed that Zander had killed a man named Walley and set fire to the boiler room to cover up the murder. It was his body everyone had assumed was Zander's.

While Nikolas safely boarded his plane to Greece, Emily decided to go the cottage where she and Zander used to live to say her final good-byes to him, still believing he was dead. Just as she turned to go, Zander appears. Happy to see that he's alive and well, Emily rushes to hug him but quickly realizes that there is something very wrong with him. He begs her to leave town with him and when she refuses he lies to her, telling her that he is holding Nikolas hostage. He then demands that she make love to him if she ever wants to see him again. Emily agrees but only to save Nikolas. Realizing this, Zander doesn't force her . Emily recognizes Zander is in need of help and tries to convince him to turn himself in to the police who have by now surrounded the cottage after being tipped off by Liz who had spotted the two of them through a window of the cottage. As they leave the cottage Zander intentionally reaches for his pocket to force the police to shoot him. Zander dies in Emily's arms. Meanwhile, Nikolas is driving in his car and as he reaches to look at the ring he had just bought for Emily he learns of the hostage situation and he swerves off the road. Later that night Lucky tells Emily that Nikolas was in a car accident. The search went on for days with no sign of Nikolas. Finally the police called off the search and Nikolas was presumed dead, again. Emily was devastated - she had lost her one true love. Unbeknownst to everyone Nikolas was very much alive and at Mary Bishop's nearby cottage suffering from amnesia. She convinced Nikolas that he was her late husband, Connor Bishop. Believing her, Nikolas begins living his life as Connor Bishop, an AWOL military officer. He gets a job painting at the church where he and Emily had once privately exchanged vows . Emily has a memorial service for Nikolas there and he watches from a window not realizing that it's for him. When Emily finds out that Nikolas had a trip to Mexico planned for them she talks Lucky into going with her. Coincidentally Mary and "Connor" go as well to renew their vows and have a second honeymoon. Emily is stunned when one evening she spots Nikolas on the balcony of the room next to hers but before she can say anything, she hears Mary call out 'Connor' and he returns to the room. She later sees him on the beach and quickly concludes that he has no idea who she is. She vows to herself that she will find a way to help Nikolas remember her and their love. After that, Emily made a point to run into Nikolas whenever she could. One day Emily took Nikolas to Wyndemere hoping it would spark a memory instead, having been drawn to Emily since meeting her, Nikolas and Emily end up making love. Nikolas is immediately guilt ridden for betraying his wife which is compounded when he learns that Mary has tried to kill herself. He leaves Wyndemere to go to the hospital before Emily can tell him the truth. When he reaches the hospital, Nikolas promises Mary that he will never leave her, much to Emily's dismay. She realizes Mary's suicide was a desperate attempt to hold onto Nikolas whom she senses she is losing to Emily. A few weeks later, believing that Emily had finally followed through on the promise to tell Nikolas the truth, Mary apologizes to Nikolas for having lied to him just as she falls unconscious from an a non lethal overdose of pills. Nikolas then discovers that several people including Alexis, Lucky and Emily had known the truth for quite some time. Feeling betrayed he turns his back on them. Emily tries to explain that they kept the truth from him for fear he would have a similar reaction to Jason's when he emerged from his coma with no memory of who he was. Nikolas was furious and told Emily to leave him alone. Emily continued to try and reach past Nikolas' anger but to no avail.

During this time Lucky and Emily grew closer and Lucky admitted to Emily that he loved her and wanted to start a life with her. Emily was touched but told him that she would always love Nikolas. Nikolas was drunk and saw Lucky and Emily together so he started a fight with Lucky. Lucky had Nikolas thrown in jail for one night hoping he would realize what he was doing to himself. While in jail, Nikolas continues to reject Lucky and Emily until Helena arrived to bail him out accompanied by two attendants in blue jackets. Realizing Helena was attempting to have him committed, Nikolas begins to fight off the attendants. Lucky appears to help them subdue Nikolas but in reality he was just providing Nikolas with the opportunity to break free and escape. Later Emily and Lucky find Nikolas on the Quartermaine estate where Emily tells Nikolas about Helena's plan to brainwash him to be the Nikolas she had always hoped for. They hide out in the boathouse and the next morning, as Emily goes to find a doctor who can help keep him from falling victim to Helena's machination, Nikolas remembers his last night with Emily before the accident. Unfortunately before he can tell Emily, Helena, tipped off by Mary, arrives with her two goons and promptly carts him off to Shadybrook where she proceeds to drug him. Emily had herself committed to help Nikolas but Helena quickly grows wise to the scheme and has Emily drugged. As Nikolas went to save Emily, it triggered his memory of his past. Everything came flooding back. He quickly rescued Emily and together they fled Shadybrook and returned to the Quartermaine boathouse to get out of the storm. There he told Emily that he had remembered everything, especially how much he loved her and the two renewed their love for each other. Emily had Nikolas back but their troubles were far from over. Nikolas and Emily realized they needed food and a change of clothes before they could go on. Emily took a flashlight and went back into the house to get the necessities. While in her room, Mary attacked Emily and told her she needed to die because she was harmful to "Connor". Emily was fighting for her life but Mary knocked her out and escaped. . When Emily didn't come back Nikolas went to the house to look for her. He found Dillon, Georgie, Lucas and Brook-Lynn shaken in the living room. They told Nikolas that Sage and Trent had been killed. Nikolas told them to stay where they were and to lock the doors. Nikolas found Emily and called the police. Emily told Nikolas and Mac that Mary admitted to killing Sage and Trent. The lights came back on and Mac, Emily and Nikolas went to the boathouse looking for Mary. When they found her she had a knife and was saying Emily had to die. Nikolas tried to get Mary to turn herself in but when she came at Emily, with a knife, Nikolas grabbed Mac's gun and shot Mary. Nikolas was arrested for attempted murder but was released on bail.

At the hospital, a clearly disturbed Mary was being treated for her gunshot. Emily, on several occasions went to see Mary to tell her that she and Nikolas were together and happy and that he remembered everything. She also threatened Mary should she ever attempt to disrupt their lives again. A few days after being admitted, Liz ran into Emily in the hospital corridor outside of Mary's room. Realizing she had forgotten some water, Liz left the cart with Emily. Awhile later, Lucky saw Emily leave Mary's room just moments before Mary succumbed to a drug overdose and died. He later told Nikolas, Emily and Liz what he had seen, but Emily denied having anything to do with Mary's death. She explained that she just picked up the pills and took them into Mary's room as an excuse to talk to her to once again, telling Mary to leave both her and Nikolas alone. Helena, determined not let Nikolas and Emily marry, enlists the help of Tracy to frame Emily for murder. They paid Nurse Harris to say she saw Emily, alone, with the medication cart minutes before Mary died. Lucky was quick to uncover the scheme and at Nikolas and Emily's engagement party (a surprise, courtesy of Helena and Tracy) announced to all what Helena and Tracy had been up to. When Nikolas threatens to throw Helena out, she put a curse on Emily and their marriage. Later, Nurse Harris is found dead, after having been cursed by Helena. Nikolas and Emily vowed to each other that nothing would keep them from spending the rest of their lives together - not even a Cassadine curse.

Together, the couple searches for an answer, as Emily's condition grows worse. Their fears are not eased when Alexis describes how her mother got extremely ill after being cursed by Helena. The two become even more frantic for answers, and eventually find them with the help of Tracy, who never had any intentions of Emily getting hurt while she schemed with Helena. Tracy provides them with the book of anti-curses and with some other tips, the couple figures the solutions lies in the Garden of Aphrodite, located (according to legend) on a Greek island. The two fly to the island and learn that the garden has been destroyed and there is no hope. Nikolas refuses to give up and discovers a small cave opening and carries a very ill Emily down to it. There, they find markings that make them believe they are in what is left of the Garden of Aphrodite. The two kiss on the moonless night (which was required to break the curse) and as they share a tender moment, flowers begin growing and Emily immediately begins to feel well again.

With the renewed confidence, Emily and Nikolas return to Port Charles, where they are greeted with a new threat – Connor Bishop. Looking just like Nikolas, except for a scar on his left cheek, Connor makes his way to Wyndemere just in time to witness Helena attack Emily with a knife. Helena refuses to allow the wedding to proceed and it looked as though Emily would, in fact, meet her death. But Nikolas arrived just in time to save the day yet again. After a struggle, Nikolas retrieves the knife from Helena's hands, and although the altercation seemed to be over, he tosses her over the cliffs. Nikolas decides to go to the police where, with the help of Emily's confession that Nikolas was just protecting her, Helena's death is decided to have been in self defense. But Connor knows better, and kidnaps Emily, bringing her back to Mary's cottage. Nikolas figures things out quickly and meets Connor and Emily at the cottage, where Emily has been pretty successful at convincing Connor not to kill anyone. Connor and Nikolas struggle for Connor's gun when it goes off accidentally. Connor is rushed to GH. As he regains consciousness, he finds Elizabeth in his room and asks to speak to a police officer – he wants to tell them what really happened to Helena. Instead, he slips back into unconsciousness, giving the four friends a chance to form a plan. Lucky and Nikolas decide they need to turn Connor in to the military police for going AWOL. Emily overhears their plans, and decides it isn't a very good plan. She takes matters into her own hands and helps Connor escape just before the police arrive. She tries to convince Nikolas that Connor is not a threat, but after several attempts to send him to Canada fail (due to Connor's manipulation) Nikolas decides to end it, and confesses to the police the real story of Helena's death. With nothing left to blackmail Emily and Nikolas with, and with the military police on their way, Connor becomes desperate, knocking Lucky over the head with a statue and holding Emily hostage. But Emily outwits Connor, and instead of having a chopper sent to Wyndemere for Connor to escape on, she brings the military police right to the door. Connor is arrested, and Emily and Nikolas are left to deal with the court system.

After the confession, it's clear that Nikolas is headed to jail. But first, the couple vow they will be married. While Nikolas awaits his sentence, Emily plans their wedding. With Mac Scorpio's help, Nikolas is allowed freedom for one day so that the couple can be married. With Elizabeth's help, Emily gets ready for her wedding, stopping to visit with Sam, Alexis, her parents and other well-wishers throughout the day. After a beautiful ceremony and elegant reception, the Cassadine's escape to their hotel room where they spend one amazing night together before Nikolas is taken back to jail. The next day, sentencing begins. Emily is confident that Nikolas will receive a minor sentence after she visits with the judge and explains the situation. But, unbeknownst to anyone, the judge assignment is changed at the last minute and Nikolas is stuck with a very bitter judge who dislikes anyone with money. He first suggests the death penalty, but after an onslaught of character witnesses speak on Nikolas' behalf, he determines life in jail, without the possibility of parole, is the best punishment. To free her husband from jail, Emily hatches a plan. She will lure Helena out of hiding by having Connor Bishop pose as Nik. She tracks down Connor and convinces him to help her. Part of the plan involved Emily teaching Connor the finer points of being a prince. It's during this time that Connor begins to develop an infatuation with Emily. Things come to a head when, to put the final steps of the plan into motion, Emily and Connor go to a cabin in the woods. Lucky and Elizabeth help set things up but Emily is left alone with Connor for long periods of time. She becomes uncomfortable with his attention but brushes it off in order to follow through with her plan.

It is a decision she soon lives to regret. Connor, becoming increasingly unstable, tries to express his desire physically. When Emily rebuffs the aggressive overtures, Connor becomes angry and stalks her in the cabin. Fearing for her safety, Emily manages to get to the basement of the cabin and hide but not for long. Connor manages to force his way into the basement and violently rapes Emily. Emily, fighting for her life and traumatized manages to find a weapon and defend herself. Connor is killed. At the same time, Helena finally surfaces. Emily is cornered and facing the barrel of Helena's gun when Lucky manages to arrive at the last possible moment and take the bullet for Emily.

Lucky is gravely injured and Helena manages to escape moments before the police arrive. While Lucky lingers in a coma, Emily struggles to deal with her rape. She finds denial easier to deal with until her loved ones push her to seek counselling. Emily tries to make her marriage work but can't. She fakes her responses to Nik and tries to avoid him whenever possible. Soon, Nik starts turning to Courtney Jacks who is going through her own marital woes. Eventually, Nik and Courtney start having romantic feelings for each other. Emily is devastated when she discovers the affair and immediately files for divorce. She would later admit that she bore just as much responsibility for the breakdown of their marriage as Nik did.

As her marriage crumbled, Emily found herself drawn to Sonny Corinthos. He offered her a place to stay that was removed from the pressures in her life and allowed her to heal from her rape and failed marriage. As Emily grew stronger, so did the feelings between Sonny and Emily. Unfortunately their happiness was marred by Sonny's increasing irrational behavior. He would go from enthusiastically happy to deeply depressed and violent. He began having delusions forcing Jason to take a stand. Give up Emily, to keep her safe, or lose the one thing that Sonny coveted most…his empire. Sonny chose Emily. With lines drawn and Jason on the other side, Ric was able to worm his way into his brother's life. Before long, Ric started taking advantage of Sonny's deteriorating condition. Emily was determined to save Sonny so she began talking to doctors and enlisting Carly's help. Eventually Sonny was diagnosed as being bi-polar. Sonny decided it would be best to end his relationship with Emily, wanting to spare her a life with someone struggling with his condition. It would take time for Sonny to trust his medication and therapy.

Emily threw herself into her studies. Within time, Emily and Nik found their way back to each other. Nik had been newly united with his son whom Jax had claimed as his own following Courtney's death to the viral epidemic that swept Port Charles. When Helena kidnapped little Spencer, Emily teamed up with Nik and helped him rescue his son. Nik and Emily fell in love and settled into their lives

Emily's happiness was marred by the violent death of her father, Alan Quartermaine during the Metro-Court hostage crisis. Emily, Nikolas, the Quartermaines and others were gathered at the Metro-Court for a fundraiser when armed gunmen seized the lobby and took those present as hostages. Emily and Nik were among them. Emily was forced to choose between her best friend, Elizabeth, who was suffering from premature contractions and her father who had suffered a massive heart attack. She struggled with the decision but with Elizabeth's insistence, Alan was released.

It would be too late for Alan. Shortly after the hostage crisis came to an explosive end, Alan passed away with Monica at his side. Emily helped her family cope with the loss while Nik gave Emily strength. Shortly after Alan was buried, Mr. Craig resurfaced. Mr. Craig, the leader of the hostage takers, injected Nik with a poison that required an antidote every 24 hours. He demanded that Nik help him establish a new identity and life. Nik reluctantly agreed while Robin, Patrick and Emily raced to figure out a cure for the poison Nik was being tortured with. Mr. Craig would often wait until Nik suffered violent seizures and chest pains before giving Nik the life saving serum.

Robin and Patrick did find what they believed could be an antidote after they managed to get a small sample of the serum. They gave it to Nik as a last ditch effort to save his life when time ran out and Jerry wasn't around to give Nik his dose. The antidote worked and Nik made a full recovery. At least it seemed so. Months later, Nik began developing periods of rage when he would get upset. He would not remember anything he did during these infrequent episodes so it was awhile before Emily began to realize that Nik was in trouble. Determined not to let anything mar their happiness, Nik agreed to have tests but decided to give Emily a special night. After Emily talked about how special she always found the Bacchanalia Balls, Nik suggested they throw their own gala. The Black and White Ball was the event of the season and was in part to honor and make a grand donation to General Hospital in Alan Quartermaine's name.

Emily had reservations about the ball as Nik's bouts of rages increased in frequency and intensity but Nik insisted on moving ahead with the plans. The gala was set for Halloween Night, October 31st. Before they joined their guests, Nik asked Emily to marry him. She gladly accepted and they went downstairs to make their happy announcement. The evening would soon turn into a nightmare. Anthony Zacchara, a rival mob boss who was completely insane, went to Spoon Island on the night of the Black and White Ball in the hopes of finding Lulu Spencer and killing her. Before long, the elegant ball was a nightmare. A raging storm moved in cutting the guests off from the mainland. Stuck on Spoon Island in a blackout, the guests were forced to hide in fear for their lives as one by one guests were murdered including Emily. After one of Nik's rages, Jason was forced to tie him to a chair in the ballroom and take Emily to safety. Emily refused to be separated from Nik and returned to the ballroom the first opportunity she found. It would be a fatal decision. Nik had been untied earlier and was desperately looking for Emily. When they reunited in the ballroom, Nik was quite agitated. Nik ended up unconscious and when he came to, he found Emily's body with a thick rope still wrapped around her throat.
