Shortly after her birth, Lesley Lu was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, forcing her mother, Laura, to reveal a secret she'd been harboring: the existence of another son, Nikolas, a product of her captivity with Stavros Cassadine. Nikolas saved little Lulu's life by donating bone marrow. Laura primarily raised Lulu after she divorced Luke, who was always off on some adventure, spending little time with his daughter. In time, Luke and Laura reconciled, but tragedy struck when Luke found Laura in the attic on the morning of their wedding. Rick Webber had been murdered, and Laura was in a very fragile state, covered in blood. When Laura needed to be institutionalized, Lesley stepped forward to raise her granddaughter.
Luke would occasionally pop into Lulu's life to take her ice fishing and spend the occasional holiday with her but, for the most part, he remained a stranger to her. Naturally, Lulu grew up to be quite rebellious. Lesley tried her best but just couldn't handle the feisty teen. She decided it was time for Luke to step up to the plate and marched Lulu over to the Quartermaine mansion, where Luke was living with his wife, Tracy Quartermaine, who forced Luke to take a more active role in his daughter's life.
Luke was constantly reminded of Laura whenever he was around Lulu but eventually began seeing the Spencer side of her. She was always hip deep in trouble. Luckily, Lulu had a close relationship with her brothers, Lucky and Nikolas. In the summer of 2006 Lulu found herself developing feelings for her new stepbrother, Dillon Quartermaine. Unfortunately, Dillon was married to Georgie Jones and loved his wife deeply. Lulu didn't think the feeling was reciprocated because Georgie had been carrying on a secret friendship with Diego Alcazar while Dillon was in prison.
Certain that she could make Dillon happier, Lulu enlisted Diego's help to break Georgie and Dillon up. Her plan worked perfectly, and Dillon turned to Lulu, who gave her virginity to him. However, even though they had used protection, the condoms had been defective, and Lulu learned that she was pregnant. She agonized over what to do and decided to terminate her pregnancy -- a decision that shocked and angered Dillon.
He tried to convince Lulu not to go forward with the procedure, to no avail. Lulu struggled with her decision after the pregnancy was terminated. Deep down inside, she knew she had made the right decision, but she hated having made it, especially when she saw how deeply it had affected Dillon. Eventually, they were able to make peace with their past and move forward as friends.
Shortly after Diego was killed in a mob shootout, Lulu, Georgie, and their professor, Pete, discussed their class when Pete received a text message from one of his other students who was in trouble. Damian Spinelli, a computer whiz, had programmed a flash drive for Ric Lansing and Lorenzo Alcazar that contained false evidence that implicated Jason and Sonny in a crime they had not committed. Pete left to meet Spinelli, but Alcazar's men intercepted him before he got too far.
In an attempt to keep Spinelli's whereabouts hidden, Pete slipped Lulu his phone before he was dragged away. Lulu went to meet Spinelli, but eventually Alcazar's men caught up with the pair. Lorenzo needed to make sure Spinelli didn't connect him to the frame-up, so he ordered his men to kill Lulu and Spinelli. The men gave the teens alcohol, hoping to get them drunk to make their deaths look like an accident. Luckily it bought them enough time for Jason and Sonny to catch up and rescue them.
In November 2006, Lulu received a wonderful surprise when her mother, Laura, was given an experimental drug. LS-49 was supposed to help Laura emerge from a catatonic state. Unfortunately, it was only temporary, and the medication couldn't be administered again without adverse side effects. Lulu took the short time that she had to bond with her mother. Just before Laura slipped back into her catatonic state, she shared a secret with Lulu. Laura was certain that she had not killed her father, Rick Webber. Lulu enlisted the aid of her friend, Spinelli, to help her track down evidence clearing her mother of Rick's murder.
In February 2007, Lulu was one of several people in Port Charles who had the misfortune of being taken hostage when masked gunmen stormed the lobby of the Metro Court Hotel. When the ordeal reached it climactic end in a fiery explosion, Lulu was one of the many injured. Luke desperately searched for his daughter in the rubble and found her. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent life-saving surgery.
Shortly thereafter, Lulu met a young man by the name of Logan Hayes. He was an ex-soldier who had served in Iraq with Cooper Barrett. Logan was bad news and planned to work for Sonny Corinthos. Lulu found herself irresistibly drawn to him. Maxie Jones resented the attention that Lulu got and decided to teach her a lesson. Maxie struck a bargain with Logan. If he seduced Lulu and then dumped her, Maxie would sleep with Logan. Logan agreed but, before long, he began having feelings for Lulu. Further complicating things, Logan had gone to Port Charles to track down his father.
Spinelli discovered that Elizabeth Webber was keeping a secret from Lulu's brother, Lucky: Jason was really the father of Elizabeth's son, Jake. As Spinelli had a crush on Lulu, he shared that information with her. Only Elizabeth, Jason, Lulu, and Spinelli knew the truth. When Elizabeth needed emergency surgery after the birth, Lulu worried that Jason would step forward and claim his son.
For a time, Lulu dated Dillon, Spinelli, and Milo at the same time. All of the men agreed to a dating plan that would allow each of them equal time with Lulu. Because of her suitors' rivalries, Lulu missed her cousin Carly's wedding to Jasper Jacks.
In April 2007, Lorenzo's men ambushed Lulu, Maxie, Logan, and Coop at Kelly's Diner. Jason and Sonny arrived, and Sonny was shot. Maxie was held at gunpoint, but Coop, an expert marksman, shot her captor and saved her. Lulu explained to a furious Mac that Coop had done the right thing.
Lulu continued to investigate Rick Webber's murder during this time and eventually discovered that the real killer had been Spencer nemesis Scott Baldwin. Scott had decided to sue to gain custody of Laura from Nikolas, her guardian at the time. During the trial, it was revealed that Luke had raped Laura at the campus disco, years before they were married. Lulu, unaware of her parents' past, was devastated. Tracy did her best to comfort Lulu. Later, Elizabeth told Lulu that Lucky had helped her after she'd been raped years before.
The judge ruled in Scott's favor, which angered all of Laura's family and friends. However, Luke and Tracy made plans to whisk Laura to an undisclosed location. After saying goodbye to her mother, Lulu moved into the Quartermaine mansion.
Tracy, who had been committed to Shadybrook because she kept talking to her dead brother Alan, discovered that Logan's father was Scott Baldwin. A DNA test confirmed their relationship.
When Maxie realized that Logan and Lulu had slept together, she showed up on Logan's doorstep to pay her debt. Logan slept with Maxie, and Maxie used it to shatter Lulu's world. She told Lulu the truth during an ugly confrontation at Logan's
Hurt and betrayed, Lulu ran out of the apartment in tears. She wound up hitchhiking and accepting a ride from a stranger, the son of a ruthless mobster by the name of Anthony Zacchara. What Lulu didn't know was that, just moments before, the Corinthos nanny had been strangled to death and it was feared to be the work of the Zaccharas who had a reputation for killing innocent people close to their enemies.
Lulu was drawn to Johnny from the start. He was wild, reckless, and downright dangerous. Despite several warnings to stay clear of him, Lulu maintained secret contact with Johnny. As Trevor Lansing and the Zacchara family made a move against Sonny's claim on Port Charles, a killer was terrorizing the women of Port Charles. For a time, Johnny was a suspect. Logan, desperate to win Lulu back, decided that he would make sure Johnny was incriminated as the killer by planting false evidence.
Lulu discovered the evidence and jumped to the wrong conclusion -- that Logan was the killer. Things got physical, and Lulu ended up hitting Logan over the head with a pipe wrench to get away from him. Logan was taken to General Hospital and lapsed into a coma. Lulu turned to Johnny, and they made love for the first time.
Lulu's remorse over hurting Logan turned to horror when it was revealed that Logan was not the Text Message Killer. The real killer was Diego Alcazar. Everyone had believed he was dead when, in actuality, he had survived the shooting and been spirited out of town by Lorenzo before anyone learned the truth.
At the Black and White ball, thrown by Nikolas and Emily to announce their engagement in November 2007, all hell broke loose. During a storm that knocked the power out, Johnny's deranged father, Anthony Zacchara, abducted Nadine Crowell because he thought that she was Lulu, held several people captive, stabbed Ric, watched and did nothing as Luke collapsed with a heart attack, and shot Leyla Mir. Johnny grabbed Lulu and took her to the Spoon Island dock, where he admitted that he'd witnessed his father kill his mother when he was younger.
Anthony caught up to them and told Johnny that he could "have the girl 'til sun-up, but then she has to die." Fortunately for Lulu, as Anthony held Elizabeth and Jason at gunpoint, Jason was able to shoot Anthony, who fell off the ledge. He broke his back in the fall and was out of commission for a long while.
In January 2008, Lulu was kidnapped and taken to a monastery. She escaped her cell but was unable to get out of the building. Spinelli dressed as a monk and sneaked in to rescue her, but Johnny found her first. However, they were both injured and got trapped in a room together. Johnny explained that it was a man named Moreau, a man who worked with Jerry Jacks, who'd had her abducted.
The couple was found and separated. Lulu ended up on a ship with Logan. He freed himself and, as he untied Lulu, one of Moreau's henchmen entered. Logan knocked him out, but another man arrived and nearly shot Lulu. Before the man had the chance, Jason burst into the room and killed the man. Johnny rushed in and untied Lulu.
Everyone but Johnny left the ship, but Johnny told them he had business to take care of. As soon as everyone else was safely on the pier, the ship exploded. Johnny disappeared, but Lulu found him later and nursed him back to health.
Two of Anthony's men kidnapped Lulu and took her to his mansion. Anthony had changed his tune and decided he wanted her to date Johnny to keep tabs on him. He blackmailed Lulu by threatening to turn Luke in for money-laundering and suggested that Luke probably wouldn't make it for long in prison because of his heart. Lulu shared the truth with Johnny, and they pretended to have a romantic relationship. Soon, however, they began to fall in love.
After Lulu accidentally killed Anthony's "monkey," Logan, Johnny helped her cover her involvement up and took the blame. Anthony tried to get the police to believe Jason had killed Logan. Anthony had Maxie taken to his suite to browbeat her into confessing that Lulu had been responsible for Logan's death. She reiterated that it had been Johnny before Anthony threatened to kill both Maxie and Lulu if he were to find out that she had lied to him.
Lulu and Johnny went on the run together. Anthony had all of Johnny's belongings moved back to the newly renovated mansion, which infuriated Claudia. Scott discovered where Johnny and Lulu had been and had them taken back to Port Charles. Anthony again threatened to harm Kristina, but Alexis told him that Sonny and Jerry would not let anything happen to her.
At Johnny's trial, Scott introduced evidence that Logan had been an undercover police detective who had worked to gather evidence against the Zacchara family. Ric, who represented Johnny, suggested that he plea-bargain because Johnny would get the death penalty. Anthony taunted Scott by uttering Serena, the name of Scott's daughter, and reciting her street address in Paris. He also told Trevor that, if Johnny were found guilty, Ric would die. Claudia lied on the stand, and Johnny was acquitted.
While Johnny and Lulu were on the run, Lulu's mental health began to decline. She had visions of Logan and confused reality with her visions. Lulu checked in to Shadybrook for treatment. While Lulu was in Shadybrook, she visited her mother often, although Laura remained in a catatonic state. Lulu told her mother what had happened with Logan, which prompted Laura to emerge briefly. She helped Lulu remember Lulu, not Johnny, had murdered Logan. Lulu showed up at Johnny's trial and confessed to the murder, but no one believed her confession. The next time Lulu went to see her mother, Laura was back in her catatonic state, which caused Lulu to question if her time with Laura had been real.
Johnny presented Lulu with a lightning bolt necklace on their one-year anniversary, but Lulu's doctor advised her to keep her distance from Johnny while she worked to recover. Johnny was disappointed, but he respected Lulu's healing process. Lulu received an anonymous note, which stated she needed to pay for Logan's murder. Lulu questioned if she had imagined the note, but Maxie and Spinelli confirmed the note was real. Logan's father, Scott, was behind the threats to Lulu. When Lulu shared Scott's threats with her mother, Laura woke up and defended Lulu against Scott. Lulu was free of Scott and his threats after her mother brokered a deal with Scott. Laura agreed to leave town with Scott if he left Lulu alone.
After Lulu was released from Shadybrook, she and Johnny moved in with Maxie. Lulu returned to work at Crimson while Johnny looked for employment outside of the Zacchara organization. His last name and lack of experience in anything other than organized crime made his search for a job difficult. Lulu was jealous when Kate hired Johnny to escort Maxie to Crimson events. Johnny opened a car repair shop, and he resented Lulu's attempts to stir up business for him. Johnny pushed Lulu away and confided in Maxie. Lulu ended the relationship after Johnny confessed he was attracted to Maxie.
As Lulu dealt with her breakup with Johnny, she turned her focus to her father. Luke had recently hired a con artist named Ethan Lovett to work at the Haunted Star. Tracy initially liked Ethan, but she quickly turned against him when she began to suspect that he might be Luke's son. Luke was curious why his wife didn't like Ethan, so he asked Lulu to help him find out. Lulu did not like or trust Ethan, but she agreed to flirt with Ethan. One day, Lulu pulled Ethan into what appeared to be a heated kiss in an effort to push Tracy's buttons. Tracy warned Lulu to stay away from Ethan, but did not tell her stepdaughter that she suspected that Ethan and Lulu were siblings. It was confirmed soon after that Luke was indeed Ethan's father. Lulu embraced her new sibling and tried to help Lucky accept Ethan.
Soon afterwards, Dominic Pirelli, one of Sonny's foot soldiers, became interested in Lulu and openly pursued her. Lulu claimed she did not want anything to do with him, yet she talked about Dominic with Maxie very often. Ethan and Lucky did not want Lulu involved with Dominic because of his connections to the mob. Lulu flirted with Dominic but refused to agree to a date. Instead, Lulu accepted a date with Matt Hunter. They planned to attend the hospital carnival together, but Matt was called in to work at the last minute. Lulu spent the day with Dominic at the carnival. Dominic was severely injured when Edward Quartermaine drove his car into the carnival. Lulu remained by Dominic's side while he recovered.
Lulu and Dominic began to date. Lulu made a startling discovery about Dominic when she was drugged during a Crimson photo shoot. She learned Dominic was actually an undercover cop, but she did not remember what she had seen or heard. The truth came out when Lulu and Dominic joined forces with Johnny after Carly was kidnapped while in labor. Johnny's sister Claudia had taken Carly hostage.
As the group searched the Zacchara mansion, Lulu fell into freezing water and was trapped by a beam. Johnny went for help while Dominic remained with Lulu. He distracted Lulu by telling her the truth about his identity. He admitted that he was Olivia Falconeri's son, Dante, and he was working undercover to take down Sonny. After Lulu recovered, she was torn over whether or not to warn Sonny about Dante. She decided to keep Dante's secret.
Dante saved Lulu when a dangerous artist named Franco kidnapped her from the Crimson office. Franco wanted to take Maxie, but he grabbed Lulu instead when he could not find Maxie. Franco strapped Lulu to a bomb and did the same to Sam McCall on the opposite side of town. Franco made it impossible for Jason to save both women, which would force Jason to choose to save only one. Dante and Jason worked together. Jason rescued Sam, while Dante rescued Lulu just before time ran out.
Although Lulu was grateful to Dante for rescuing her, she felt the burden of keeping Dante's identity a secret when Carly asked Lulu to be the godmother to Carly's daughter, Josslyn. Lulu knew Carly would be devastated if Dante succeeded in placing Sonny behind bars. Lulu channeled her feelings into anger at Elizabeth instead when she learned Elizabeth had broken Lucky's heart by engaging in an affair with Nikolas.
On the day of Josslyn's christening, Lulu sensed something was wrong when Dante never arrived at the church. Dante had shown up at Sonny's house to arrest him, and Sonny shot Dante. As Dante recovered in the hospital, he learned Sonny was his father. Olivia had hidden Dante's paternity from both Dante and Sonny in order to protect Dante from Sonny's world. Lulu supported Dante while he adjusted to the news, and she refused to help Sonny form a bond with Dante.
After Dante learned Sonny was his father, he told Lulu how much he respected his mother for keeping Sonny out of his life and raising him alone instead of having an abortion. Lulu worried about how Dante would react when he learned she'd had an abortion.
Lulu continued to remain on Dante's side, even when Carly pressured her otherwise. Sonny was on trial for the murder of Claudia Zacchara, but Dante suspected Michael was withholding key information regarding Claudia's death. Carly and Sonny placed Michael in hiding, but Dante found him. Lulu knew where Michael was, but she refused to tell Carly. When Dante spoke to Michael and realized Michael had killed Claudia, he convinced Michael to tell the truth. Dante believed Michael would receive a sentence that did not involve prison. Dante was wrong. Michael confessed and was sentenced to five years in Pentonville.
Everyone close to Michael was shocked and outraged when Michael was sentenced. Carly blamed Lulu for choosing Dante over family and vowed to make her pay. Lulu assured Dante that he had done the right thing, and they made love for the first time. Although Lulu and Dante were closer than ever, she became insecure about her relationship when Brook Lynn Ashton arrived in town and moved in across the hall from Dante. Brook and Dante had grown up together, and she intimidated Lulu when she showcased her domestic abilities for Dante, all abilities Lulu did not possess.
Lulu was more insecure after Carly reminded Lulu that Dante was Sonny's son, and Sonny was never faithful. She warned Lulu that cheating could be genetic. Lulu believed her fears were proven correct when she walked in on Dante and Brook in a compromising position. After Lulu threw Brook out of Dante's apartment, she realized Dante had been drugged. When Lulu accused Brook of drugging Dante to seduce him, Brook confessed that Carly had paid her to seduce Dante. Lulu confronted Carly, but Carly spun the story to pin the blame on Brook.
When Lucky went undercover working for a European mobster named the Balkan and was in danger, Lulu decided to head to Ireland to help Lucky. Dante accompanied her on the trip. They returned to Port Charles, and Dante was assigned to guard Brenda Barrett. Lulu was less than thrilled and pressed Dante to share what he thought of guarding a supermodel. She sensed Dante was hiding something related to Brenda.
Lulu became more concerned over Dante's position guarding Brenda when Dante was attacked, and Brenda used his gun to shoot the attacker. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against both Brenda and Dante after the shooting. The attorney representing them revealed to Lulu that Brenda and Dante had covered up a murder in New York a few years earlier when Dante had first guarded Brenda. Lulu was shocked to learn Dante and Brenda shared a past. She responded by breaking up with Dante.
Dante apologized several times and worked desperately to win Lulu back. She eventually conceded and agreed to give him another chance. They attended Sonny's wedding to Brenda, where Lulu learned Dante had not fully disclosed his relationship with Brenda. Carly interrupted the wedding ceremony with paperwork that showed Dante had signed away all parental rights to Brenda's unborn child. Carly claimed Dante and Brenda shared a child. Dante explained to Lulu that Brenda had already been pregnant when he guarded her. He had agreed to be the father on record to protect Brenda and her child from the real father.
Tragedy struck when Lucky and Elizabeth's son Jake was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Lulu apologized to Elizabeth for how she had treated Elizabeth since the affair with Nikolas. Lulu was devastated when Luke was revealed to be the driver that had killed Jake. Luke claimed he had been unaware he had hit Jake. Lucky accused Luke of being intoxicated behind the wheel, although Luke denied his drinking had been a factor. Lulu did not agree with Lucky that Luke was an alcoholic, but she participated in an intervention that Lucky arranged. Luke eventually agreed to attend rehab, and Lulu quit her job at Crimson to renovate the Haunted Star while Luke was gone.
Luke disappeared from rehab immediately after he checked in, and Lulu was deeply concerned about her father. Dante took Lulu to France to distract her. While they were gone, Lucky found Luke at the brothel in Florida where Luke had grown up. Luke refused to return to Port Charles and said he was done with family. He said that Lucky and Lulu needed to give up on him and let him be. Lulu refused to give up on her father and became determined to find Luke.
Lulu started her search for Luke at the brothel. By the time Lulu arrived, Luke was gone. Javier, the owner of the brothel, had been in contact with Luke but refused to share the information with Lulu. He claimed Luke did not want to be found, and he would not go against Luke's wishes. She took a job as a waitress at the brothel to gain information on her father's whereabouts. Dante showed up at the brothel and tried to convince Lulu to return home. She remained adamant she would not return to Port Charles without her father. Her situation became more complicated when Javier expressed an interest in dating Lulu.
