The hunt for "H" is now over, but the search for Line of Duty Season 7 seems like a cold case. For those of you who have Fans who've spent years clutching their cuppas and going "Mother of God!" at the TV screen --- we just got an update from Vicky McClure herself. And in a nutshell, it's not good news.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, McClure (who plays DI Kate Fleming) admitted she has no updates on Line of Duty Season 7.
She confessed:
"I'm afraid (...) I don't want to give anyone false hope. We’ve all been very clear that we’d absolutely love to do another series."
Well, looks like that's one sting even AC-12 can't investigate!
Will there be a Line of Duty Season 7?
It's been more than four years since the last episode of Line of Duty aired on BBC One. This May 2021 event drew an audience of nearly 16 million, which is still a number most TV shows can only dream of.
The ending ended up dividing fans (Nigel Boyle's DSU Buckells, really?), but it sure left the door open for more.
Earlier this year, Adrian Dunbar (aka Ted Hastings) sent fans into a frenzy when he said that "next year we'll be working on a new series." Quite naturally, X (formerly Twitter) detectives went into overdrive. Reddit threads spun theories. Hope was alive and well. All of that burst as McClure came along with her honesty!
But on the bright side, McClure has also hinted that she, Dunbar, and co-star Martin Compston (DI Steve Arnott) might reunite...in a way.
She said:
"[We] have been talking about doing a travel show together, though. If any of us ever has any spare time, we’ll do it. Line of Duty gave us two brilliant things – our careers and our friendship."
This hint makes us imagine the three of them road-tripping through Europe, as they clash over fish and chips. Most of us would take it at this point.
Does Line of Duty deserve a Season 7?
Jed Mercurio created Line of Duty, and the show remains one of Britain's most addictive crime dramas.
If you recall, there were a lot of acronyms, lies, moral gray zones, and interrogation scenes that kept us glued to our screens. Over six seasons, AC-12 went on to expose corruption whilst also delivering some of TV's best cliffhangers.
It has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% from critics and 94% from audiences. Clearly, the show defines a generation of British crime TV shows. And despite having a controversial finale, the show's cultural footprint was bright as ever. Fans still argue about the ending like it's a case file.
So, why hasn't the BBC straight-up pulled the trigger on Season 7? Mercurio never confirmed whether the series is truly over or just "on hiatus."
Some believe the team is waiting for the right plot. Others suspect the BBC might want to rest the franchise before a revival. Anyway, the fandom's patience is wearing thinner than Ted's restraint as of now.
All six (existing) seasons of Line of Duty are streaming on BBC iPlayer in the UK and BritBox in the US and Canada.
