Stranger Things Season 5 just dropped the first five minutes of its opening episode, and honestly, it’s pure goosebumps. The first five minutes of Season 5 take us right back to what we first knew of Hawkins. It seems to be dark, scary, and haunting all at the same time.

In those short five minutes, we see Will Byers trapped in the Upside Down for the first time once again, but this time, we also have Vecna making a horrifying promise that, in turn, sets the stage for the last and final fight.

Here’s everything that those terrifying, beautiful first minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 revealed.

Back to Hawkins, 1983: The nightmare begins again

Netflix couldn’t have picked a better way to kick off Stranger Things Season 5. The first scene of the premiere, titled “The Crawl”, doesn’t waste a second. We’re instantly pulled back to November 12, 1983, which is the exact day Will vanished in Season 1.

A digitally de-aged Noah Schnapp is seen as 12-year-old Will, lying alone inside Castle Byers. He’s softly singing The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” reminding us of the Season 1 days.

But the peace doesn’t last long. There suddenly is this horrifying screech and BOOM! The Demogorgon has found him. The camera follows Will as he runs through the forest, his flashlight unstable and flickering, his heart beating as loud as it can.

He climbs a tree to hide, but the branches betray him, and he falls. What happens next is way darker than anyone expected. The Demogorgon drags Will to the Upside Down version of Hawkins Library, and there, Vecna waits.

We get a first look at Jamie Campbell Bower’s Vecna in the first five minutes of Season 5, and he softly whispers, “At long last, we can begin.” It’s the kind of calm-before-the-storm that makes your stomach drop. He uses his powers to trap Will in his vines and forces a tentacle down his throat, saying,

“You and I, we’re going to do such beautiful things together, William...Such beautiful things”

It’s disturbing, powerful, and oddly poetic, and it is exactly what Stranger Things does best.

Stranger Things Season 5: The Duffer Brothers aren’t holding back this time

If there’s one thing Stranger Things Season 5 proves right away, it’s that this season isn’t wasting time. As Ross Duffer told Tudum,

“This season is sprinting from the start.”

And he wasn’t kidding. Usually, the show eases us in, showing the kids living normal lives before the monsters show up. Not this time. There’s no calm, no routine, no safety. The first scene itself throws fans right into the middle of it all.

Matt Duffer explained that “nothing in Hawkins is normal anymore.” The entire town is under strict government quarantine, with Big Brother-style cameras watching everyone’s moves. The days of Dungeons & Dragons and bike rides are long gone. Even before the battle begins, the sense of dread is everywhere.

Shawn Levy, who directed and produced several episodes, hyped it up even more on the red carpet, calling it “the greatest TV finale I’ve ever seen.” Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler) shared that Mike’s story “ended in the best way possible,” while Caleb McLaughlin admitted that Lucas’s emotional journey this season left him “a little heartbroken.” You can feel that the cast is both proud and emotional as this is their last trip to Hawkins, after all.

Meanwhile, Netflix confirmed that Stranger Things Season 5 will be released in three parts: Volume 1 on November 26, Volume 2 on December 25, and the finale on December 31, which will even play in select theaters.

The Duffer Brothers are also revisiting old mysteries with unused notes from a secret mythology document they wrote during Season 1. As Ross Duffer said,

“The last remaining questions that are answered in that document… will have some big reveals in Season 5.”

The first five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5 remind us exactly why we fell in love with the show to begin with. The throwback to Will’s disappearance isn’t just fan service; it’s a full-circle moment that sets up the most terrifying seasons yet.

And with Vecna’s promise hanging in the air, the countdown to Hawkins’ final battle has officially begun.
