In Blue Lock’s high-stakes footballing world, relationships are primarily ego-driven, revolving around the need to psychologically and physically dominate the field during matches. Due to this, romance does not come into play often. Nevertheless, this doesn’t stop fans from indulging in “shipping” culture, pairing characters who they’d like to see together on screen.
One of the most popular results of this has been the link between Anri and Jinpachi Ego, the two crucial figures who conceptualized Project Blue Lock and run it together. While Anri has immense respect for Ego and cares about him a lot, Blue Lock has never indicated that she has any deeper feelings of attraction towards him.
As mentioned, Blue Lock is an intense tale revolving around Isagi and other aspiring footballers as they take part in a program meant to cultivate Japan’s top striker. The series features a plethora of unique male characters, but there are very few women. In particular, Anri Teieri, the energetic member of the Japanese Football Association, is the only recurring female character.

Since the beginning, Anri is shown to be an ambitious woman, though those around her focus more on her looks than her talents. Nevertheless, she persistently pursued her goal of making Japan shine on the world stage, convincing the higher officials to go ahead with her plan of creating Project Blue Lock, which would be headed by Jinpachi Ego.
While Anri’s passion helped in the creation of the training program, she has mainly acted as an assistant to Ego since then, helping him bring his vision to life. While several people remain unable to accept Ego’s ideology of selfish football, Anri completely trusts him, faithfully following all his orders.
Anri and Ego’s relationship in Blue Lock
Along with being Ego’s second-in-command, Anri is also a close friend and caretaker of his. She constantly scolds Ego’s lifestyle, displaying concern whenever he looks exhausted and even helping to ease his burden. This ranges from handling all sorts of administrative tasks and conducting press conferences, to simply looking after his well-being and cooking him meals like Yakisoba.
Ego, though always serious, displays care in his own way. While he often insults Anri and is condescending when she fails to understand his plans, he takes the time to provide detailed explanations to her. She is also the only one Ego can be fully honest with, trusting her to take care of the parts of the project where his reach can’t extend.
Ego’s personality prevents him from being directly nice to anyone, but he has shown appreciation to Anri, particularly when she makes him midnight snacks. However, this is as far as their relationship has gotten so far in Blue Lock.
While such moments would be considered subtle hints of budding love in a typical romance manga, Blue Lock is a sports manga where the matches are always the highlight. Anri and Ego are close friends who value each other in their own special ways, but nothing has proven that they are romantically attracted to one another.
Rather, the creators use them as thematic devices to give insight into Ego’s mind, while also often providing lighthearted and memorable scenes between the two as a break from the story's usual intensity. It is unlikely that the status of their relationship will change, and fans who enjoy shipping them will probably not get any canon content to materialize their wishes.
