Boruto not only tells the story of the next generation of ninjas but also continues exploring the lives and development undergone by characters who carry over from its parent series, Naruto. Moegi Kazamatsuri, in particular, is one such figure who was initially not expected to hold much relevance but has had a surprising level of importance in the sequel.
Though originally known for her relationship with Konohamaru and her contributions during Pain’s Assault, Moegi came into the spotlight during Code’s invasion of Konoha in Two Blue Vortex, where she put her body on the line to protect others. Moegi Kazamatsuri is not dead in Boruto, but she is currently incapacitated after being consumed by Claw Grimes.
Her tragic fate also led to the creation of the deadly villain, Matsuri. In Naruto, Moegi Kazamatsuri was originally a member of Team Ebisu, along with Konohamaru and Udon. Moegi was confident, brave, and caring, sharing a close bond with Konohamaru.

Her most memorable scene came during Pain’s Assault Arc, where she ran past the antagonist’s centipedes to save a young boy named Sota. In Boruto, Moegi was one of the teachers at the Ninja Academy as well as Team 10’s leader.
She was a respected mentor who demonstrated talent with the rare Wood Release technique, while her relationship with Konohamaru continued to grow stronger. However, the stakes of the series shifted dramatically in Two Blue Vortex, when Code split up the Ten-Tails to create his own army of Claw Grimes.
In order to draw out the protagonist, Code unleashed these monsters on Konoha, spreading chaos throughout the village. Unfortunately, among many of those who fell victim to the villain’s schemes, Moegi was one of them.
Two Blue Vortex chapter 5 revealed that Moegi was consumed by the Claw Grimes when shielding a mother and a child. This transformed her into a small tree, where she was unconscious but not dead yet. Others, such as Sasuke, have also suffered the same fate.

Can Moegi be revived in Boruto?
Moegi being turned into a tree by the Claw Grimes resulted in the creation of Matsuri, a Human God Tree that uses her chakra as a template and whose personality is shaped by her own. According to Boruto, the way to bring back those turned into trees is by defeating the Human God Trees they are linked to.
When beaten and killed, the core of the Human God Trees - the Thorn Soul Bulb, remains. The protagonist believes that taking this to the trees of the trapped ninjas could lead to them being freed. However, if the Thorn Soul Bulb is retrieved by the other antagonists, it can also help the Human God Trees resurrect, making them effectively immortal.
While none of the incapacitated characters so far have been revived, the recent chapters of Two Blue Vortex have strongly hinted that Moegi may be the first one. This is because Matsuri was defeated by Boruto, and Konohamaru currently possesses her Thorn Soul Bulb - the key to saving Moegi.
With Jura’s attention being occupied by Boruto and Kawaki, there may not be a better chance for Konohamaru to save his childhood friend and potential love interest.
