One of the most controversial topics in the fandom for mangaka Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man series is Pochita’s true identity. Although the series has only explicitly identified Pochita as the Chainsaw Devil, fans have long theorized that it isn’t his true fear. Instead, many assert that he is the Birth Devil based on a large number of clues from throughout the manga series so far.

However, the basis of the theory revolves around what the real-world original purpose of a chainsaw was. Originally invented in 1780, it was first used as a hand-cranked medical tool that would help with childbirth. The original purpose of the tool would also justify Pochita’s chainsaw-like design in the context of his true identity being the Birth Devil.

The inherent violence the Devils possess, almost as if they’re born with it, further supports the use of chainsaws in Pochita’s design. As the Birth Devil, Pochita is utilizing a tool closely associated with birth as a weapon due to his instinctual violent tendencies. Pochita’s “organ scarf” in his true form is also significant, as it can be interpreted to represent an umbilical cord.

Chainsaw Man likewise sees this “organ scarf” begin from Denji’s navel, which is where an umbilical cord would be attached to a child in the womb. The fact that the “organ scarf” wraps around his neck further likens it to an umbilical cord. This is due to the medical phenomenon known as a “cord accident,” in which the cord is wrapped around a baby’s neck during birth.

Pochita’s Erasure ability in Chainsaw Man is the biggest piece of evidence for the theory

Arguably, the single biggest piece of evidence for this Chainsaw Man theory, however, is Pochita’s Erasure ability and the life cycle of Devils. It’s said that all Devils claim to hear the sound of a chainsaw revving before they’re reincarnated to Earth after dying in Hell. Essentially, Pochita is the one who gives them new life, or brings them back, by killing them.

Pochita’s Erasure ability also serves as significant evidence, as it allows him to remove Devils from this cycle of rebirth, permanently killing them. As the Birth Devil, it would make sense for Pochita to have such control over the finality of the Devil life cycle. The fact that he can even undo the process by throwing up a Devil’s remains further supports this idea of his true identity.

Part 2’s narrative also serves as a major clue

The narrative of Chainsaw Man Part 2 itself also serves as significant evidence for the Birth Devil theory being true. Denji being enlisted to fight against the Death Devil by War Devil Yoru effectively opposes him to the antagonist. Likewise, the opposite of death, which is the ending of a life, would be birth as the beginning of a new life.

The fact that Death is also the strongest of the Four Horsemen Devils, and presumably their leader likewise, further supports this theory. Pochita’s pre-series fight against the group may have been an instinctual motivation to combat his polar opposite in Death. This would also explain why he fought them to the point of almost dying rather than running away.

Final thoughts

While certainly still speculative, it’s clear that the Birth Devil theory has significant evidence of all forms throughout both Chainsaw Man story parts. Likewise, with Denji and War Devil Yoru’s fight against the Death Devil finally on the horizon, fans can expect more evidence to appear in the near future.
