Dandadan released Episode 2 of its latest season, and it wastes no time diving headfirst into pure chaos and psychological torment. The episode starts with Okarun suddenly losing his mental fortitude and wanting to kill himself. Similarly, Momo also does not wish to live and tries to stab herself with a shard of glass, but she is saved by Turbo Granny.

JiJi is the only character unaffected, and he tries his best to stop Momo from harming herself. Meanwhile, he also figures out that the worm is only able to detect them by sound and that they need to maintain silence.

From this moment onwards, it is clear that it is JiJi who will be the center of the episode. While Okarun and Momo finally snap out of their suicidal thoughts, the story throws the audience another curveball.

We see a Yokai standing against the Mongolian Death Worm. The viewers are introduced to Evil Eye, the series’ most enigmatic antagonist to date. It turns out that it is because of his supernatural powers that people tend to have these irrational thoughts.

Turbo Granny warns everyone not to look into its eyes because that is how one triggers it. In a desperate attempt to defeat the worm, Okarun transforms with the help of his powers and, with one attack, beheads the Mongolian Death Worm.

However, it proves futile as the worm has regeneration powers. The only viable solution for JiJi, Momo, and Turbo Granny is to run away, and in that moment, Evil Eye looks into JiJi’s eyes. What follows is perhaps the most heart-wrenching sequence of the series so far.

We're transported into a tragic, emotionally disturbing flashback that reveals the true origin of the Evil Eye, and it's nothing short of soul-shattering. The Kito family in Dandadan has been offering sacrifices for a really long time, and Evil Eye was once just a kid who was unfortunately chosen by them.

He was kept imprisoned with only one barred window through which the kid could see the outside world. As a boy, he longed for affection and friendship, but instead, he was betrayed and kept locked up. This boy met a very tragic end as he was burned alive.

His soul never passed on. Instead, it remained on Earth, twisted by pain, loneliness, and the unfulfilled desire to connect with others. And he became what we now know as the Yokai, the Evil Eye. JiJi in Dandadan runs toward the corpse of the boy and expresses his desire to play with him.

This was the only permission Evil Eye needed, and it took possession of him. What sets JiJi apart in this episode is his deep empathy. After witnessing the Evil Eye’s backstory, he doesn’t respond with fear or anger.

Review of Episode 2, “The Evil Eye” of Dandadan

From a purely visual standpoint, Season 2 Episode 2 of Dandadan is a masterpiece in dynamic animation and emotional storytelling. The animation during the battle sequences is incredibly fluid, showcasing Studio Science SARU’s ability to depict chaos without losing clarity. Each movement feels deliberate, and the kinetic energy jumps off the screen.

Color also plays a huge role in the episode’s tone. The Kito family scenes are dominated by sickly reds and eerie purples, a deliberate choice to signal malevolence.

Later, when JiJi begins to succumb to the Evil Eye’s influence, we see those same purples subtly overtaking the background, indicating that the worm is no longer the true threat in Dandadan. It’s JiJi, or rather, what’s now inside him, that everyone should be worried about.

In conclusion, this episode of Dandadan was packed with an intense yet tragic story of one of the strongest Yokai. Moreover, with JiJi possessed and his powers amplified by the Evil Eye, the stakes have never been higher.

This episode cements Dandadan not just as a series filled with quirky action and ghost-hunting fun, but as a deeply thoughtful narrative unafraid to explore the darkest corners of the human spirit.
