Lazarus is one of the most popular anime to be released this year, captivating viewers with its dystopian setting and intense narrative. Now that the anime has finished airing, fans are naturally left with countless questions that weren’t directly addressed in the series.
Among these, a common query is regarding the relationship between Christine and Axel. While Christine certainly does care about Axel in Lazarus, her feelings cannot be fully characterized as romantic attraction.
Ever since the start of Lazarus, Christine and Axel have stolen the spotlight from the rest of the cast, intriguing fans through their complex individual origins and compelling dynamic as a pair. Christine is a former Russian spy known as Alexandra who completely changed her identity in the pursuit of freedom.

Axel, on the other hand, may seem easygoing, but has a dark past himself. He was forced to take part in clinical trials of Hapna in prison, during which he was the only survivor. The fates of both characters were intertwined from the very first episode, where Christine tricked the fleeing Axel and pushed him into joining the task force.
Since then, they kept sharing playful banter and were core members of Team Lazarus. However, with every new episode, the two kept growing closer and closer, forming a deep understanding of each other’s troubles and acting as a support system for one another.
Why does Christine not love Axel in Lazarus
In the Lazarus episode 12, there was a shocking scene where Christine kissed Axel before leaving on her mission, believing the two may never meet again. Due to this, there have been numerous fan theories on how she loves him.
Christine already had a love interest from the days when she was a spy, called Inga. The two had briefly reconnected in episode 8, where Inga was heartbroken over Christine abandoning her. Nevertheless, by the end, Inga sacrificed herself to save Christine, leaving the female lead devastated.
It is entirely possible that Christine may be bisexual, and it would also be consistent with Lazarus’ promotion of inclusivity. However, as mentioned, Christine’s feelings for Axel cannot be easily defined as “love” in the traditional sense.
Axel and Christine share a very close bond that goes far beyond friendship. The protagonist has saved her many times from near-death situations, including rescuing her from an oil rig in another country by disobeying orders. He was there for her at her lowest and never wavered even after hearing about her history.
Axel’s sincerity resonated with Christine, who also attempted to help him whenever possible. In particular, when Axel was brutally wounded by Soryu, Christine saved his life. Hence, both characters' relationship is not a mere fling, but rooted in mutual respect. They appreciate each other’s strengths and accept each other's flaws.
Having gone through life-and-death missions, their closeness comes as no surprise. At the same time, aside from the one scene where Christine kisses Axel while he is hospitalized, there is no other clear indication that she loves him romantically.

Even after the kiss, the series never revisits the moment. Therefore, Christine's action can be interpreted as an expression of admiration and the deep value she places on Axel, rather than a desire to start a relationship with the protagonist.
Since she had done so under the belief that they might not meet again, it may have been a parting gesture from her. Axel, too, continued remaining nonchalant until the conclusion, and never sought to go further with Christine, keeping their bond strictly platonic.
