One of the most beloved aspects of Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia manga series and its anime adaptation is its wide and likeable cast of characters. From protagonist Izuku “Deku” Midoriya to side characters like Denki Kaminari, virtually every named character in the series has a fan base. One of the most prevalent examples of this is Mirio Togata, a member of U.A. High School’s Big 3.

Likewise, fans were incredibly disheartened to see Mirio lose his Permeation Quirk during the events of the series’ Shie Hassaikai Arc. While this loss led directly into one of the character’s most iconic moments, it was nonetheless upsetting, given Mirio’s potential as a Pro Hero. Understandably, fans’ immediate concern was whether or not he’d ever get his Quirk back.

Thankfully, Mirio does get his Quirk back well before the story’s end thanks to the help of Eri and her own Rewind Quirk. This happens just before the events of the Paranormal Liberation War Arc, where he makes his triumphant return and plays a key role. Mirio continues to play a key role throughout the mainline manga’s story with a successful Pro Hero career afterwards.

However, some fans find themselves confused by this turn of events. This is primarily due to the role Eri’s Rewind Quirk played in both the destruction of Mirio’s Quirk and its eventual return. Thankfully, there is an easy explanation as to how Eri’s Rewind was able to both prematurely end Mirio’s Pro Hero career and later revive it.

Mirio losing and regaining his Quirk in My Hero Academia highlights the danger of Eri’s Rewind

In My Hero Academia, the Shie Hassaikai were responsible for creating a drug that could make someone Quirkless. More specifically, it would eliminate the Quirk Factor of those who had a Quirk, destroying it instantly and rendering their abilities inaccessible. Kai Chisaki, leader of the Shie Hassaikai, also developed an antidote for the drug, which could restore a Quirk.

Both the drug and its antidote were made with genetic material from Eri as the base due to her possession of the Rewind Quirk. Ei’s Rewind allows her to reverse a living being’s body back to a previous state, even to the point of being unborn and erased from existence. Through many tests and experiments, Chisaki eventually found a way to target Quirk Factors with Rewind.

However, Eri’s Rewind is also the only known way to restore a Quirk in My Hero Academia. This rings true for both Eri’s voluntary use of her own Quirk and the aforementioned antidote, which the Shie Hassaikai made. This duality, in addition to the aforementioned risk of Eri’s use of her Quirk, highlights just how dangerous Rewind can be.

That being said, the series also emphasizes how invaluable a Quirk like Eri’s can be when handled properly and with care. While the restoration of Mirio’s Quirk is a prime example, the manga’s Final War Arc also shows it restoring severe injuries Deku sustained. In any case, Mirio’s journey to losing and regaining his Quirk perfectly highlights the duality of Rewind.

In summation

After losing his Quirk due to the Quirk-Destroying Drug bullets in My Hero Academia’s Shie Hassaikai Arc, Mirio does regain his Permeation Quirk. Ironically, Eri’s Rewind is both what allowed Mirio to regain his Quirk and what made him lose it in the first place. This likewise highlights the dangers and benefits that the series’ strongest and most powerful Quirks can have.
