As one of the most beloved manga series ever, One Piece unsurprisingly has a multitude of theories circulating on the internet. While a few are made with extreme seriousness after analyzing various hints Oda has sprinkled across the narrative, others are made lightheartedly and in a more humorous tone.

Until now, most hypotheses related to Buggy the Clown have fallen under the latter category, as fans have considered him to be a gag character. As a result, they played along, changing Buggy the Clown to Buggy D. Clown and believing him to secretly be an immensely powerful individual.

However, fans recently discovered that "Buggy" in English translates to "Xe bug" or "Xe béc" in Vietnamese. Combined with the various parallels between the two pirates in One Piece chapter 1155, the sheer number of coincidences has convinced readers that Buggy is, in fact, Rocks D. Xebec’s son.

Buggy’s Vietnamese translation strongly hints at his connection to Rocks D. Xebec in One Piece

As mentioned, the word "Buggy" in English translates very similarly to "Xebec" in Vietnamese. Though "Buggy" in this case refers to a small vehicle, there is a high likelihood that it is simply a play on words by Oda.

Clever uses of translation have been prevalent in anime for a long time. For instance, Kira from Death Note is meant to denote "killer" but also translates to “Light” in many languages, subtly revealing the protagonist’s true identity. In One Piece itself, "Nika" translates to "happiness" or "joy" in Japanese, linking this mythical figure to Joy Boy.

Therefore, Buggy and Rocks D. Xebec’s connection through this Vietnamese translation would remain consistent with popular methods of foreshadowing and clue-dropping. Additionally, while such a link would have been seen as a major stretch usually, One Piece chapter 1155 only makes the parallels between Buggy and Xebec more apparent, giving it more weight.

While Rocks D. Xebec’s character design closely resembles Blackbeard's, some fans have also pointed out similarities with Buggy; it also closely resembles Buggy’s, aside from the red nose prop. Additionally, the latest installment of the One Piece manga reveals Xebec’s poster when he is deemed a criminal by the World Government.

In this, the infamous pirate sticks his tongue out and holds his hand out, exactly like Buggy does in his bounty picture. Buggy’s origins remain one of One Piece’s bigger mysteries; all that's known is that he joined the Roger Pirates around the same time as Shanks.

He is also only one year younger than Blackbeard, who would be his older brother if they really shared a father. Hence, after Rocks D. Xebec’s defeat at God Valley, the Roger Pirates may have picked up both Buggy and Shanks, who were possibly left behind by their pirate and Celestial Dragon fathers, respectively.

While most of Buggy and Rocks D. Xebec’s alleged connection is speculation at this point, Oda has introduced too many coincidental parallels and hints to dismiss the theory outright. As One Piece’s story moves forward, fans will be looking forward to finding whether their hypothesis was really on the mark or if it was way off base.
