Sanji is one of One Piece’s most controversial characters. On one hand, fans admire his chivalrous and heroic nature, as he never hesitates to put his life on the line for the sake of his ideals and loved ones. On the other hand, many find the chef’s perverted nature to be highly polarizing.

While Zeff instilled in Sanji a deep respect for women, to the degree where he refuses to hit them, the Straw Hat constantly acts in a deplorably lustful manner around beautiful women. Notably, the fandom has grown tired of Sanji’s “heart eyes” trope, where his intense attraction to someone is exaggerated for comedy.

However, by revealing that supremely powerful pirates such as Gol D. Roger, Rocks D. Xebec, and Whitebeard had the exact same reaction as Sanji when they first saw Shakuyaku, the series has lightened the blow of Sanji’s behavior and helped redeem him by placing him on the same level as these iconic warriors.

One Piece legends mirror Sanji’s gag in the recent chapters

As mentioned, Sanji is an individual who is both beloved and hated at the same time. While his tragic past, selfless personality, and loyalty toward Luffy make him a commendable character, he can also act lecherously when in the presence of good-looking women.

Consequently, fans have grown to hate Sanji’s animated “heart eyes” reaction, with most believing that it makes him an unserious individual who is not given his due respect. However, the latest chapters of One Piece have challenged this view, revealing that some of the most respectable figures of the seas had a side just like Sanji.

In One Piece chapter 1156, the idols of the seas, the Kuja Pirates, were introduced, stunning everyone around them with their beauty. The second-in-command of the crew, Shakuyaku, particularly stood out for her appearance, so much so that even Gol D. Roger and Scopper Gaban chased after her and were left helpless during battle.

However, the true moment of shock came during One Piece chapter 1157, where Shakky had quit the Kuja Pirates and set up her bar in Hachinosu. The Rocks Pirates, infamous for their brutality, ruled the island and barged into the crowded bar.

Immediately upon seeing Shakky, incredibly powerful characters such as Rocks D. Xebec, Whitebeard, Shiki, John, and Don Marlon had extremely exaggerated expressions, where love signs popped out of their chests and heart eyes appeared on their faces.

This hilarious twist proves that Oda does not mind highlighting the lighter side of characters, and that a person's comedic actions do not diminish their significance in the storyline or their future development.

As a result, the general perception of Sanji has become much more positive, with many believing that Oda deliberately used the pirates’ craze for Shakuyaku as a narrative tool to elevate him. Along with his redemption, readers also started believing that Sanji is destined for greatness soon due to his comparisons with the likes of Xebec and Roger.

The most common hypothesis is that Sanji will awaken his Supreme King Haki soon to aid Luffy in the battle against Imu and the God’s Knights in Elbaph.
