One Piece has revealed yet another secret that is going to create waves in the fandom. In chapter 1154, Eiichiro Oda delivered the biggest reveal. It had been speculated by fans for a long time, and now it is official: Rocks D. Xebec is the father of Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard.

This confirmation is huge because, as fans, we understand more about Blackbeard and his personality. Moreover, we also get extra information about the Rocks Pirates in One Piece and how the story has spanned over generations.

The title of this chapter is “Unable to Die,” and the manga reveals pieces of the past related to Rocks Pirates till the current timeline. We see a younger Loki, son of King Harald, who is sad and all by himself.

This child is then confronted by the Rock Pirates, and they are trying to get more information about King Harald's location. It is during this flashback that Rocks D. Xebec, with his two-tone hair and intense aura, is revealed in full detail for the first time. His resemblance to Teach is undeniable.

Because of this one panel, Eiichiro Oda has confirmed that Xebec is the father of Blackbeard. As the chapter ends with this reveal, there is no mention as to who could be the mother. Moreover, it is unlikely that the creator of One Piece would reveal that, as he tends to avoid introducing mothers in the story.

For years, fans had kept an eye on Blackbeard since there was a high chance that he had some relation with Xebec. The biggest clue we had was that he had named his ship Saber of Xebec. Because it was a flashy name, the One Piece community did not take the time to start speculating on the nature of the relationship they shared.

Another hint given by the creator is subtle but is noticed. Blackbeard is highly ambitious. For instance, Luffy wants to become the Pirate King, but Blackbeard's goal is different. He is always hunting for power and fame. This quality of his mirrors Xebec, as he was extremely ambitious.

Ultimately, if we start comparing both of these characters side by side, the parallels become undeniably similar. For example, Rocks had a strong crew consisting of Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido. Meanwhile, Blackbeard’s crew is also strong, as it consists of strong criminals.

Oda has always been careful with mirrors in storytelling. Rocks and Teach aren’t just similar, they are successor and inheritors, not just in spirit, but in blood. Blackbeard is the final extension of a legacy the World Government hoped was dead.

Blackbeard’s mysterious past in One Piece finally makes sense

For the longest time, Oda had kept Blackbeard as a mystery in One Piece. The only thing we knew about him was that he was once part of the Whitebeards' crew, but he did not last for a long time. And we know that he is probably the only one who can wield the power of two Devil Fruits.

Other than that, his past was a well-kept secret, and now we know why. If Teach is the son of Rocks, he was likely conceived before or during the God Valley Incident. And knowing the World Government, any child of Rocks would’ve been seen as a threat needing immediate extermination.

Final thoughts

After finally getting a confirmation about Rocks being the father of Blackbeard, it seems like One Piece is ready to reach its endgame. Blackbeard is now more than just a villain who betrayed Whitebeard.

His existence is living proof of how the World Government has never been successful in exterminating radical characters. Even if they are no more, the legacy survives. Luffy and Teach were always destined to clash in One Piece. Now we know why; they are the final heirs to the two greatest pirates of their age. One seeks to free the world, the other to rule it.
