The All-devouring Whale: Homecoming is a Chinese anime reminiscent of Pokémon that has sparked much discussion this season. While it opened with a few stunning episodes, the series soon experienced a decline in quality.
Thankfully, fans’ concerns seem to have been addressed in the latest installment. The All-devouring Whale episode 6 sees the anime return to its roots with gorgeous visuals and fluid battles while featuring the most emotionally resonant storyline yet.
The All-devouring Whale revolves around Fan Lingxiao, a reincarnated spirit pet master aiming to restore the strength of his fallen sect, the Lingxiao Pavilion. The recent episodes of the anime saw Lingxiao taking significant steps to achieve this, evolving the spirit pets of himself and his sect mates, while also defeating enemies who took advantage of the pavilion’s period of weakness.

Looking ahead, episode 5 of the anime finally kicked off the Lingxiao Pavilion’s path to ascendance, as they took part in the treacherous D-rank assessment test. In this challenge, they were required to face talented individuals from many other sects and collect light spores. However, the episode ended on a cliffhanger as Gu Ling ran into a previous member of the Lingxiao Pavilion, Duan Ye.
The All-devouring Whale episode 6 summary
Episode 6 of The All-devouring Whale is a unique installment in the series since it is the first episode where the protagonist is not featured. Rather than being a drawback, however, the anime uses this opportunity to highlight its fascinating extended cast.
The episode begins with a meeting between Gu Ling and Duan Ye, where the former is delighted to see her friend. However, Duan Ye has changed noticeably, having joined the Rakshas Sect. Their reunion was soon intruded upon by enemies, who attacked them using their spirit pets.
This posed little challenge for Duan Ye, as he used his shadow cat, Heimi, to destroy the enemies and leave them at his mercy. As Gu Ling went to greet the cat she loved, she soon noticed that Heimi was eating its opponents' spirit pets and that it had terrifying injuries on its face.
Duan Ye explained that his sect had saved Heimi from the damage it suffered in the past when the Lingxiao Pavilion was attacked by other sects. He then invited Gu Ling to join the Rakshas Sect and leave her failing group. However, she expressed that the Lingxiao Pavilion was returning to its old ways with Fan Lingxiao’s help.
Annoyed at Gu Ling’s positivity and Lingixao’s influence as an outsider, Duan Ye left, claiming that their paths had already diverged. The scene then shifted to Cheng Xi, who was collecting spores with his pet, Thorn Back. They soon ran into trouble after encountering a young boy named Loong Nitian.
Though Cheng Xi initially did not take his opponent seriously due to his age, he soon understood the gravity of the situation when Nitian revealed his Emperor-grade spiritual pet, an Azure Scale Dragon. When the exam overseers were discussing the emergence of this beast, Bai Tianshu explained that Nitian could control the dragon because of Spiritual Pet Accompany.
This was a method where talented trainers would have pet embryos put into their spiritual pools at a young age, allowing them to possess pets far surpassing their limits. Back on the battlefield, witnessing Spiritual Pet Accompany triggered harsh flashbacks in Cheng Xi of the days when his father tried the same experiment with him but failed.
Angered, Cheng Xi engaged in battle against Loong Nitian despite his overwhelming disadvantage. Surprisingly, at the beginning of the battle, Nitian’s dragon missed its target and fell over. This was the result of not having trained enough with his spiritual pet, after which Nitian and the dragon hilariously argued with each other.

Seizing the opportunity, Cheng Xi and Thorn Back attacked Nitian with spikes. In the nick of time, the dragon unleashed a dragon breath attack to protect its master, though it disturbed the tortoise that carried the island. The battle raged on, and just as Cheng Xi seemed to be turning the tides, Nitian used a special move where he used his dragon’s stored energy.
This marked the end of their fight, as Nitian easily overpowered his opponents. He brutally beat down Thorn Back, and right when he was about to kill Cheng Xi, his father stopped him. After getting scolded for not restraining himself, Nitian headed back. Surprised to see a healthy father-son relationship despite the use of Spiritual Pet Accompany, Cheng Xi reconsidered his view of Nitian.
At the end of the episode, Cheng Xi addresses Loong Nitian, stating that he will defeat him one day. Nitian welcomes the challenge, and the pair form a rivalry. Therefore, The All-devouring Whale episode 6 is a more character-centric installment focusing on old bonds as well as new relationships.
While Gu Ling’s friendship with Duan Ye has been broken, Cheng Xi has created a new link with Loong Nitian. The intensity of the confrontations, the dive into Cheng Xi’s tragic past, and the beautifully animated high-octane battles make this one of the best episodes in The All-devouring Whale anime.
