Recently, since One Piece has officially entered the Final Saga, fans have been on top of looking for the smallest details that Eiichiro Oda might have left in the story. And once something seems even remotely connected to the current story, the fandom comes up with some of the more interesting theories and speculations. Some of them are for fun, but there have been a handful that ended up actually being canon to the story.
This time, in the middle of it is none other than Monkey D. Luffy himself. Fans are now speculating that there is a chance that Joy Boy is not a mysterious legendary figure whose will Luffy seems to have inherited, but it is Luffy himself who somehow managed to time-travel into the past. This idea has been bouncing around the fandom for a while, but recently, the popularity has exploded.
But regardless of where you stand, the theory has a magnetic pull; it’s wild, imaginative, and oddly plausible in certain interpretations of the lore. Basically, this theory suggests that Luffy's destiny in One Piece has to be more than finding Roger's treasure. We know that Oda has something huge planned because when our protagonist revealed his dream to his crew, it was censored.

Instead of simply continuing Joy Boy’s ideals, Luffy would become the Joy Boy. In this scenario, Luffy reaches the end of the series, fulfills his journey, and then something catastrophic or unexpected occurs: A time distortion, a triggered mechanism within the One Piece, or an awakened ability related to time.
Whatever the cause, Luffy is sent back eight centuries into the Void Century, arriving in the era of the Ancient Kingdom. There, he becomes the figure we know as Joy Boy, lives out a life of liberation and conflict, and dies long before history is rewritten by the 20 Kings.
How does One Piece lore make the Joy Boy time-loop sound almost plausible?

Fans who are in favour of this theory have pointed out that there are numerous parallels between Luffy and Joy Boy. Wherever our protagonist sets foot, he ends up liberating nations. He spreads joy simply by existing. His Nika form, with its heartbeats and animated freedom, aligns seamlessly with what Joy Boy is believed to represent.
Even small coincidences like Luffy’s original voice actor providing the sound for Joy Boy’s drums of liberation in One Piece are treated as playful hints. To many fans, a full-circle twist would be the ultimate payoff for a story that constantly emphasizes inherited will and the repetition of history.
The biggest evidence that could prove this theory to be accurate is the existence of the Toki Toki no Mi, a devil fruit that literally has the power of time travel. Kozuki Toki has this power, and she managed to jump forward in time, but we know that an awakened devil fruit unlocked unimaginable power. So it would not be wrong for us to assume that an awakening fruit could unlock the ability to travel backward.
What would the theory mean for One Piece’s ending?

There are a few fans who believe that if Joy Boy is Luffy from the future who managed to time-travel, then this story might lose some of its charm. Because it would imply that the protagonist had to travel back to fix something, as things in the present might not be going in their favour. If this happens, then the potential it could end up undermining all the emotional payoff that Luffy's journey.
The alternate theory suggests that if Luffy becomes Joy Boy in One Piece but retains no memory of it in his next life, then breaking the time-traveling loop becomes the final act of liberation. Supporters of this theory have doubled down by not only accepting the time-traveling concept but also adding their own twist. They imagine a version of events where Luffy, in the present, makes a different decision than his past self and finally defeats Imu, bringing the story to its true conclusion.
This seems plausible because even the final villain, Imu, has introduced the concept of immortality and sharing his power with others. So, Eiichiro Oda could make this cannon, but for now, we will have to wait and watch. This theory has lately caused an uproar in the fandom, and for good reasons.
In the end, even if he is not Joy Boy from the past, he is Joy Boy for the present, and that is more than enough.
