"With that personality?" - Even Naoya Zen'in's voice actor is shocked by this Jujutsu Kaisen character's popularity

Koji Yusa, the Voice actor for Naoya Zen'in in Jujutsu Kaisen, has finally spoken out about something that has been bothering him. After the manga's most recent popularity poll, he found himself staring down a strange inconsistency in reality as he discovered that the misogynist speedster he voiced placed quite high on the list. Yusa genuinely seemed confused when he exclaimed that he couldn't fathom why anyone would resonate with this character.

The experienced seiyuu, Koji Yusa, addressed Naoya's fans in Jujutsu Kaisen without mincing words, suggesting that perhaps some people appreciate a character who talks without a filter, values their abilities, and has pride in themselves. Yusa highlighted one important aspect, though: the horrible opinions that appear in the series are completely Naoya's and not his own.

When Naoya Zen'in landed in tenth place during official Jujutsu Kaisen popularity voting, eyebrows raised across the fandom. This wasn't some minor side character scraping by—he genuinely outranked several beloved heroes. The second strongest member of the Zen'in clan managed this feat despite losing every single fight he entered, most humiliatingly against Maki twice.

When Naoya Zen'in finished in 10th place in the official Jujutsu Kaisan popularity voting, it raised eyebrows among the fanbase. Naoya is hardly a minor character, and beats out several heroes who have been appearing almost since the beginning of the series. Yet somehow this walking red flag secured enough votes to crack the top ten in Jujutsu Kaisen's competitive popularity landscape.

Decoding the Appeal in Jujutsu Kaisen

Projection Sorcery does a lot of the heavy lifting for Naoya with Jujutsu Kaisen fans. The cursed technique turns him into a speedster with limited time to be fast, so that the fight choreography sounds really good in print and on screen. When Gege Akutami draws Naoya moving at 24 frames per second, it all breeds enough visual cred for admiration.

His design certainly doesn't hurt as well. The traditional Japanese robes, with modern piercings and bleached hair, roll into a striking design. Pretty privilege extends even to fictional tugs; conventionally, pretty people are able to get away with a lack of personality for faults. Many of the fans I mentioned have admitted that they deal with his trashy worldview just because he's so lush to look at.

Koji Yusa looking confused in public isn’t just a case of him truly being confused about Naoya in Jujutsu Kaisen. Voice actors have been harassed by fans of the character when fans haven’t been able to separate a voice actor from the portrayal of a villainous character. When he addresses the situation on Twitter, he is creating a professional space while explicitly noting he has understood the assignment; he voiced a character that people love to hate.

Even Sukuna and Mahito’s voice actors don’t need to make as clear a public assertion to dissociate themselves from their characters. For Yusa, it speaks volumes that he felt he needed to say anything at all.

It really does suggest that Naoya and misogyny are very distinctive forms of evil. Nobody cares or feels the need to clarify that they aren’t associated with a curse that eats people or simple cursive evil behavior. But daily sexism? That’s a need for clarification.

Naoya Zen’in’s popularity in Jujutsu Kaisen has multiple layers that the character’s voice actor may never truly understand. Whether some fans are impressed by Naoya's cursed technique, find his design attractive, enjoy the satisfaction of seeing exposed shortcomings, or ironically like him based on his extremes, it’s hard to deny that he has and will leave an imprint on the Jujutsu Kaisen canon.
