Hiromu Arakawa’s Daemons of the Shadow Realm (Japanese title: Yomi no Tsugai) began serialization in Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine in December 2021 and currently spans 10 volumes. The manga follows Yuru and Asa, twin siblings known as the “children who sunder day and night.”

Born with a mysterious birthright that ties them to beings called Daemons, the two are destined to wield immense supernatural power, but their lives take a dark turn when they are separated as children.

Yuru lives peacefully in a remote mountain village under the protection of ancient stone guardians, unaware of the truth about his family or the world beyond. Meanwhile, Asa endures confinement, performing a “sacred duty” that the villagers never fully explain. As secrets unravel, the twins’ paths cross again in a struggle that pits divine beings, hidden factions, and human greed against one another.

  • Yūya Miyamoto as Asa, the enigmatic sister burdened by destiny.
  • Yuichi Nakamura as Dera, a charismatic yet morally gray figure.
  • Misaki Kuno as Gab-chan, a mischievous and powerful Daemon companion.

With Yuichi Nakamura (known for Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen and Hawks in My Hero Academia) on board, expectations for nuanced performances are sky-high.

Final thoughts

Yomi no Tsugai carries a tone reminiscent of FMA but builds its own identity through darker fantasy, layered politics, and a morally gray cast of characters. Early manga readers describe it as a complex, faction-driven story filled with mystery and power struggles, akin to Attack on Titan or Dorohedoro, yet uniquely Arakawa in its humor, heart, and emotional weight.
